You people need to organise a 'money bomb' like on the Alex Jones show ! Get it on You Tube WORLDWIDE and I PERSONALLY will donate what I can ! LONG LIVE STEAM !
God bless that individual who provided the funds! At least some people appreciate history. Now all we need are funds for PRR K-4s 1361. Maybe we can get someone wealthy to donate. You work on Bill Gates, I'll work on Steve Jobs :)
I think the 4501 was originally used on the old Rathole line between Cincinnati OH and Chattanooga TN when Southern owned her , if so did she used to have a smoke deflector because of the old tunnels ?
I hope that they restore Southern 722, Frisco 1522, NF&W 611 and 1218, Buffalo & Gully Creek #4, Graham County Railroad Company 1925, and many other steam engines.
I just went and visited her yesterday from all I was told it will happen. But it may be awile yet before shes running down the rails again on her own, all the same I am very happy this old friend of mine is going to be able to speak to me again.
She was restored and tapped out on her 15 year inspection. Currently at ITRM under restoration for a new season. After 285K from the original restoration, I'm sure the museum is finding it hard to get the cash for another type rebuild we gave her the first time.
I think dragonpullman is trying to say that 624's restoration is cosmetic, rather than the restoration to operating condition like what;s happening to the NKP 587.
@IraDeathViper what is 1225? THat is a lima berk from Pere Marquette. And yes they are restoring 624 to cosmetic. They actually are trying to get it running!!!! The last two mikados ready to be restored are 587 (close to being finished) and 624 (still on the drawing board). 765 is a berk that is ran up in fort wayne historical society, It still runs. It will hopefully be running till the end of this decade :) I still can't wait to see 587 in action or check out the 624.
phft, yeah good luck with that.. Theres a better chance 1217 would return if so, its been restored nicely on the outside and needs some work inside and wheels
Just because there's a photo of her without her boiler jacket and appliances. I'm a member and volunteer at TVRM. This is only a boiler inspection for a cost analysis not a full restoration, it says so in all official TVRM press releases. The latest said that although the official results haven't come back yet, no major issues were found. I will keep my fingers crossed as she's my favorite, but she as of June 5, 2009, is not under restoration.
I know though the current focus now is finishing up the 630 hopefully before the 610's due for her 1472 day inspection, then fixing up the 610. I know the air pump needs maintenance plus anything they might find in the inspection.
Who knows? Maybe you can ride her on the Chickamaunga runs when she gets restored, thats all they're really going to use her for since she's TVRM's priveless gem
Its great to see steam being restored but remember economics rule weather a steamer gets restored and weather it will operate. Also the darn insurance groups make it hard to operate steam too. And the sue happy public makes it even harder as well. Steam makes an excellent public relations tool though.
Wouldn't we all? I like her green, but she was an MS Class Freight Mike for the Southern and thats the way I like her, but I do like her Cresent Green. You got a good ideaabout her being green for a "going green", that would sound great for a commercial
Oh it was, but they have to do an ultrasound for it first though, thats what the photo of 4501 showed, being torn down for an ultrasound test but she'll run again.
4501 was the first operating steam locomotive I had the luck to witness. I was about 12 and it was about 1972. I have been especially fond of that green Mikado ever since.

There's a live steam version of it running today. It makes a great substitute for the real one.

Do we have an exact date because this year is her 100th birthday and it would be a shame for her to miss it.

Hopefully someday, it will steam along side fellow Mikado NKP 624 (whenever NWIRPS gets done restoring it).

I thought NKP 587 was the only NKP Mike being restored?

I would have been too young to have ridden behing 4501 when she was still running in the 90's and at least you have.
SP4449Warbaby 2 years ago
Maybe I'm thinking of a different locomotive, because this was in 2004. It was on a railroad museum in Tennessee. A Southern locomotive.
