"No, we have human spirit. I have experience. I know."
That sounds like observation and pattern recognition. We can tell there are reasons behind the kinds of things we get from that. I think the reasons behind her experience might be such that she might find their existence problematic in the same way that she seems to find the idea of relying on logic since it makes things so figurable. Also, why is it objectionable to not have been made by someone else on purpose? What's so bad about tha?
category of thought may be arbitrary, but not so form. see language is there to capture form, and form is not arbitrary it is, as he said arranged in a particular way, it implies some form of order, cosmos.
and the ability to abstract properly isn't random either.
FactvsReligion, your mom is using a common tactic used by every theistic apologist I have ever encountered. They basically state that you cannot ABSOLUTELY disprove the existence of something (trying to prove a universal negative), then it must be true. Well if that is the case then every god of every mythology of every culture must be true, because they cannot absolutely be disproved. Is she prepared to believe in Zeus or Isis or Mithrais?
of corse as a father he is doing his job by informing his kids of what he beleaves is real and what is fake i guess he dose not want his kids to be made a foul off by some relogen or colt but then again it takes away the openess in the child, hmmm thers always a draw back, of corse the father is set on his ways and he wont look into his beleafs
to find the answers his looking for or may find if he took the time to look
you have the husbean fighting over his none beleave in God and then you got his wife fighting over her beleave in God
now if you thowe in a kid the kids got to beside
wich to chose from whos right!
so its more likey the kid would chose the stronger parent wich in this case is the father, but what the father dose not understand his wife love him and he kind of forceing her to chose between her beleaf in God over her love for her husbean which in any case he loses
she also finds religion disgusting. I know it's easy to mistake her for a Christian in this video. but she is playing devils advocate. she is sort of spiritual in the loosest possible sense and I think she would probably be insulted to think that people saw her arguing in favor or any religion. Let me put it this way. she saw that film Religulous and she liked it even more than I did.
Religulous is a fun movie, but I wouldn't take it seriously. Anyone can say they're right without backing it up. I was actually pretty dissappointed with Bill, I thought he was really going to take on Religion. Oh well, still pretty funny though.
One of the arguments people seem to miss is that there is no 'hand of god' in every single piece of evidence ever found in the entire history of man.
I know he hit on it for a second, but this is a major point. People project intelligence into their observations where there is none. When questioned as to proof or knowledge of this what do they say?
Great to see a couple with the independence to hold separate views who show great respect and care for each other as they debate these views calmly and logically.
I just came to a bit of a revalation when it comes to this argument. You can't say that an athiest believes that everything is an "accident" because an accident requires intent.
An accident dose not require intent, if it was intentional, it wouldn't be called an accident. Maybe what you are trying to say is that an accident requires an event?
Damn, was I really this tired? What I mean is that the definitions for accident are contradictory. I also think that... what the hell? Could you just get rid of that comment? It's just wrong. However, I do believe that there is merit in... wait, I got it! The definition for accident is dependant on the idea of intent. In order for something to be "without intent," intent must be accepted as a possibility.
I think accident can have connotations of being some kind of misstake. That kind of accident can't happen without an intent going wrong. No intent, then no intent going wrong. The universe happened by accident. Do they mean we atheists believe something went as it wasn't supposed to?
No, that's not what I meant. With all the atoms and complex gasses and minerals interacting all the time. It is almost inevitable that life will form under the right conditions.
it's fantastic that two people with such opposing views can overcome them and love one another and just enjoy a intellectual debate without it resorting to a yelling contest. your father seems like he knows his stuff and presents a solid argument. but i am biased as i myself am a atheist.
Why is this video rated so low? I found it extremely interesting and liked both points of view.

Prof Dawkins would be sad to hear you speak of evolution as purely accidental.
I like the discussion though

Your family is weird. I dig that.
I like how your accent seems to be a hybrid of your mother's north american and your dad's Australian (is it?) accent.

There is no reason for me to think there is a pie.
I like how You pop escapes from emotional traps laid by Your mom. Did he tries to lure her somewhere where he know the ground?
I love way how math escapes from clutches of doubt. It hacks it with axioms. And makes the things work. Like a cofee machine or bridge.
I have no trouble with axioms like "There is a god". Why not, if they make something useful or at least interesting of it?

Good/Evil are very very fun things to talk about, and I'd say more fun to talk about than religion.
