Yes, that is true! I've seen pictures of dozens of couture models in fashion magazines and of deceased models who worked in the early part of the 20th century. Long hair has always been one of the defining qualities of a beautiful woman, especially someone that is well-mannered and obedient. Models are expected to look the way designers expect them to and the influence of classical designer labels in Europe is felt on global scale.

I know some things, though not everything. The reason is I read and look when it comes to fashion. Instead of relying on ANTM for the learning experience I read articles and dig up information on models from as far back as the 1920's. It's really important to know about supermodels such as Lisa Fonssagrives and Dorien Leigh because they set the standard in their respective continents yet the rules were similar. It's part of why expectations for models are still similar on a global scale.

Well, there is always one or two(if by pure luck) that had a few years of prior modeling experience and/or know about Parisian haute couture (especially back when the House of Worthe was the "in" designer label). The unfortunate circumstance is the one who is already learning the profession won't be liked by the audience because the editors will make her look mean

Alot of girls in highschool fantasize and some want to become models. So, they read Teen Vogue and like it, but then may find reading a book on fashion history to be dull because it is not new and popular anymore. To them Adriana Lima and Gemma Ward are the supermodels of today and Tyra Banks is simply a mentor with a modeling history that existed since they were in their diapers. They don't remember her from 1991 or 1992. ANTM is their only exposure to "modeling".

The day when ANTM is taken off air is the day when Karl Lagerfeld will applaud Tyra for not ruining the reputation designers established for the industry since the 19th century. I don't think Charles Worthe or Elsa Schiaperreli would have given the show's progressive ideas an A+ for effort if they were alive. Both had sophisticated and pure artistry as facets of their style. All the cycles are scripted.... that is why there are writers! Don't you read the cast listing for a TV show? The script inludes what photoshoots to give I bet. Tyra says the show is her baby and that she has the rights to make changes any time she wants. My issue with her is she evidently handed over the task of photoshoot creator to the writers who most likely know only a tiny bit about fashion. Come on... there have been more kid-type shoots than couture or commercial for the past 9 cycles.

Yes, I admit, some designers are looking models for skill with no preference for a lively personality and others are looking for models with both. When it comes right down to it a model will get a job if she can give attitude on the runway. She books print work because of the magazines but it's mainly due to her portfoloio and good manners.

I like that this cycle is giving opportunites to girls who would more that likely face rejection under normal circumstances for modelling jobs but it's a little OTT. It's not like these girls are below 4 ft. When that guy made a big deal that Cindy Crawford was 5'10'' and that girl sitting down was only 5'6'', I thought WTF! It's only a few inches difference.

Tyra created this cycle for short models just to gain more ratings, that's pretty much it. she did it because it's America - average women here in america is 5'5-5'7. But that's just ruining these girls self esteem. If they were to walk in a casting for a top designer, they wouldn't take any of these girls seriously, especially after coming from a show called ANTM.

Yes, you are absolutely correct. Janice Dickinson and Tyson Beckford(sp?) would agree because the show focuses more on what America is used to seeing in the real world on the streets and at school than what the designers in Paris or Milan see on a weekly basis. NYC is not as open-minded as Tyra Banks because the designers at some point learned couture in Europe or studied from someone with the experience in designer couture clothes. They have a fine taste for artistry, ANTM doesn't say that.

ANTM's target audience is young girls, like really young (elementary school) but also includes middleschool, highschool and the first two years of college. The reason I say this is because many of girls who try out for ANTM have the personality that you can see on the Disney Channel and sound like the Kardashian sisters. It makes me want to poke my eyes with a needle when hearing the contestants' voices. Even their knowledge of fashion is ridiculous cause all they know is Victoria's Secret...

It's nice their giving short models an opportunity to find an agency, but in the real world of high fashion, these girls are way too short. designers like them tall and thin. the samples wouldn't even fit these girls, they're too short. There are gonna be three more cycles but each one since the fourth one has been generic. It's like they were locked in a room for eight hours aday and then released out into the wild.

It makes sense. The reason why the show's main target audience(children) has consistently been expanding is because screaming when excited is part of being a child. It makes it easy for girls to relate to the content for each season. Back in 2003, there was this mediocre-sized audience for the first one, partly because the show was a novelty and appealed to college girls. After the fourth season the contestants started looking and souning like Mylie Cyrus and Carrie Underwood.

Yes, I agree with you. Like 95% of ANTM "alumni" haven't studied the photographers of the 19th century. Italy was the place to go if you wanted to work in fashion or photography. It was this place some of the most beautiful designs and pictures were produced. I know Elsa Schiaperreli designed dresses for Jacolyn Kenndy(sp?) and Charles Frederick Worth designed beautiful, soft-colored gowns with a train for Queen Maud of Norway, who was the most stylish in Europe back in the early 20th century.

It's good you pointed out model etiquette. In real life models don't scream and shout at the top of their lungs when meeting a supermodel because it's pretty juvenile. The profession isn't a kid's game, so one has to learn how to behave like an adult fast in order to please the designers when at casting. Designers don't hire women or girls based on just personality yet Tyra places so much emphasis on personality while overlooking skill, etiquette and knowledge. She doesn't present all the...

Some former contestants have stated in interviews, specifically "THS: America's Next Top Model" that the show is not reality but rather an obscured version of it. What this could mean is instead of having control over a situation other people are the ones maneuvering(sp?) it, i.e. the producers, the editors, the judges.

By "control" I am referring to how each moment for a contestant can be edited to look and sound like the opposite. If you have sound bytes, you can create new sentences, thus eliminating the truth. Models are expected to be honest in order to keep their print and runway jobs yet they have the right to make choices. If someone doesn't want to do something then she doesn't have to. She could skip casting calls, or say no to print offers. It's a risk but one has to be aggressive to become she wants

I'm surprised Tyra doesn't put emphasis on knowing what genre of modeling a person wants to pursue. If you really want to do couture runway in Paris or Milan then work hard and reject mainstream print offers that won't help in furthering your career. If someone does alot of commercial print advertisements she's not gonna make it to Europe but if she lets her agent know the type of opportunies she wants then may work to her advantage.

In the beginning you can't be picky about what types of print or runway work to take on because grunt work is required before making it to high fashion. But after a couple of years it's acceptable to say to your agent "I have done so much low fashion work, now I want to move on to high fashion". Developping a portfolio and a set of skills are crucial to getting jobs because designers want to see people with talent. You can learn how to be a model by reading the books and watching the videos.

With models, designers like youthful-looking ones. It's no secret that alot of teenage models exist. Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, Twiggy and Kate Moss all started in their teens. But there are plenty of women who are age 18-22 and have a younger-looking body and face. That can work.

If knew what couture was then their respect and seriousness for the profession would make them look more mature as models. in every cycle there are many aspiring models but one or two actually have the skill to get work in Paris.

NYC was once the hop-on-over to Paris because models are groomed through and through there to be sent to European fashion capitals for castings. Now, NYC is THE place that European fashion capitals are sending their models to. So, the pressure to retain rigid standards established in fashion culture since the turn of the century (1900 not 2000) is firmly rooted. Changes in fashion happen rarely but won't be in any time soon. Tyra keeps pushing her ideas and new "models" into NYC....
