I played this in the late 90s and when I finally ejected the CD from the drive it took off as a flying saucer and was soooo badly scratched. It wasn't even my CD, it was borrowed from a friend's friend, so that kind of got me in trouble.

The drive was a 18x Philips... I guess the aliens were like "we'll give you flying saucers" so... the CD was flying in the room.

lol I have a top end gaming pc yet i still find myself coming back to the old classics when stuff gets stagnant, right now I'm playing Apoc as it's the only XCOM game I've not finished yet, got a game of Betrayal at Krondor on the go as well, and shall be starting one of Quest for Glory IV, just to catch up on all the oldies i've missed. Good games are like good books, they never loose their appeal, if you don't like them then it's your loss.

Bought this on the Steam sale yesterday (it comes preconfigured with Dosbox and runs fine, though occasionally a bit slow) and ... damn ... that intro just blew me away.

The game is 13 years old, but that intro is one of the best I've ever seen, even though the CGI is lacking in some areas (like the explosions), it's extremely well written and produced. The ingame music is great as well. Definately worth the 2€ for the collection alone.

Try using DOSBox to run it - it's a free open-source DOS x86 emulator. Great for running old DOS games. In fact, the copies of X-Com that are sold on Steam are the original DOS versions running on DOSBox.

@Mattie2013 I have to agree. The game had an intro FAR FAR FAR beyond its time, it's cinema quality sound and score give the intro such a depth of immersion that many (all?) other games fail to do. From the very first time you run this game, you are DRAWN IN by that intro, index finger itching against the mouse, ready to take action.

It's a badass intro for sure.

Well seeing that some peeps are saying TFD/1st xcom are the best and this game isnt so good, allow me to balance their opinions with my own: best game for me was the 1st xcom, for a whole variety of reasons, 2nd place was this one :P Despite the interface and graphics needing some getting used to, the mechanisms from the previous games are here and expanded.3rd place...none. TFD for me was just an inferior clone of the 1st.

Microsoft has a compatiility tool. Also you might want to google that you'll get advices on how to "downgrade" your computer such as disabling directX and changing the compatibility.

How can Doxbox crash PC so badly? I've used it for years no problems. I just can't see how that can happen. Just create a restore point if you think there's a risk.
