lol my dad was there, cant believe it he can remeber prices hand just limp hangin off the side i cant beliveve something so horrible happened bk then now tht shit never happens thank god =/ i feel for prices family
pryce was right behind..hans stuck car..who by pure instinct .did a quick manouver to the right and barely missed..the marshalls..i,m sure van vureen thought for a second or less..i,m dead,,cause he was cut in the middle of the track..formula 1 cars..passing through..what a lack of responsabilty back in those days.the other marshall..bill...just a very lucky man..
@KevE63 Yes, they both had extinguishers; the dead marshal's fire extinguisher, after it hit Pryce (taking his helmet off & very nearly his head too) was launched over the grandstand into the parking lot where, I read, IIRC, that it broke the windshield of a passenger car. What makes no sense is why Zorzi pulled off to the left and stopped, only 100 yards or so beyond the entrance to the pits; if he came to a stop there, surely he could have pulled into the pits & it never would have happened.
@jb4peace1 Well, not quite...the marshalls were actually supposed to wait till they got the all clear to attend the car. Incidently, had it still been raining on Sat like it was on Wed, then Tom probably would've been higher up the grid (he'd been fasted on wed) & have avoided this...but I guess tragically F1 spelt backwards is 'IF' -daz in oz
@dazincalculation I don't see how you correct anything I said. Where Zorzi came to a stop was so close to the pit entrance one wonders why on Earth he didn't just pull into the pits. I never suggested the marshals weren't partly at fault, but if Zorzi gets his car into the pits, none of this happens. And Pryce was where he was because of an awful start (15th to 22nd on the first lap), but had worked his way back up to 13th by the time of the crash. A good start & he would've been near the front.
@jb4peace1 Guess we'll just have to ask why Zorzi put the car there. It could have been a number of reasons which include him thinking the car wasn't gonna get to the correct pits, or him knowing the car might catch on fire if it did get in there. We'll never know, but we can blame Zorzi if he knew the marshalls would disobey regululations...obviously he didn't know. But indeed, his start was a shocker. If Pryce avoids this, who knows, he's might even be racing for Williams in 1980...
@dazincalculation Pit would be the safest place for Zorzi in case of fire, tons of marshals & extinguishers. Also, I misremembered about the fire extinguisher; it dented a door car door, jamming it shut. But, yes, many questions, many "what ifs?" One could also blame classic British propriety. According to Tremayne, Pryce had an offer from John Surtees to drive for him in '77, but demurred because of the unseemly appearance of driving for a sponsor run by Pryce's father-in-law.
@jb4peace1 Another death I found upsetting was DeAngelis'. The events leading up to it. The way the Lotus team started to focus on Senna which caused Elio to leave, and the fact that Patrese was scheduled to test that fateful day, but Elio insisted... Were you around in the 60s seeing the F1's? I wasn't but heard that Clark was a special driver. Bandini's another whose death was tragic. He only ever made 2 errors...
@dazincalculation I was around in the '60s (a child) but didn't see any F1, as it wasn't on TV & I wasn't near Watkins Glen to see USGP. Closest to F1 I got was USAC @ Seattle RC (Mario, Gurney, Donahue). Clark's death was a real shocker. I feel it was similar to death of JFK in that every racing fan around back then remembers exactly where they were when they heard Jim Clark was killed. A lot of drivers died in those days, but everyone thought Clark was superhuman & immortal.
@jb4peace1 Yes Clark was a special driver so I heard (I's born 1969). I think a deflated tyre caused his death. Thank goodness the likes of Jackie Stewart got safety to improve.
@dazincalculation Admit I wasn't paying attention to F1 when DeAngelis was killed. 2 big safety improvements came directly from Clark's death (prodded by Jackie Stewart): tires were required to be bolted to wheels & Armco barriers to keep cars from flying into trees, etc. Ironically, poorly-installed Armco led to other deaths (Rindt, Cevert, Koinigg). but it did save many lives. Fuels bladders came after Bandini's death, but fatal fires continued for another 10 years. Sad.
@jb4peace1 DeAngelis was testing the Brabham and it lost a wing in France and the car flipped upside down and because there were hardly any marshalls around he died from the smoke and lack of oxygen. Yep safety's improved and no death in F1 since 1994.
@jb4peace1 Another death I found upsetting was DeAngelis'. The events leading up to it. The way the Lotus team started to focus on Senna which caused Elio to leave, and the fact that Patrese was scheduled to test that fateful day, but Elio insisted...Were you around in the 60s seeing F1's? From the other camera angle on the resting car of Zorzi, the driver was on drivers left hand side of the car when the marshall was hit, prior to the extinguisher being used. This clip appears to be several seconds after extinguisher was used. Also, Pryce was in a Shadow, the same car (same paint) as the Italian Zorzi - that car that flies past has a diff paint job = not a Shadow.
Also, this marshall uses his uper body to pull himself up... fire Marhsalls wore red...white undergarments?
If you want to see the guy who hit Pryce with fire extinguisher then you will see a super fast spinning dead man got split half, only his intenstines keeping his torso and 1 leg together cause the other flew away the first micro second he got hit by Pryce's car This is why you don't want to see the video!
Nope. It hit his helmet at such a violent speed the helmet wrenched sharly upward. The strap of the helmet went into his neck, nearly decapitating him. So ironically enough the helmet killed him.
The extinguisher itself bounced off his helmet, flew over a grandstand and landed in a car park where it hit the door of a car, jamming its door shut.
Short story, his helmet-strap nearly tore his head off. He died instantly. So did Van Vuuren.
@McLarenMercedes Van Vuuren was cut in half I think. Pryce didn't see Jasen and if he did he would avoid him. RIP Pryce and Van Vuuren. I think Jasen is an South African.
He was. Neither Van Vuuren or Pryce knew what hit them. Maybe Pryce realized he was going to hit a track marshall for a fraction of a second, but Van Vuuren died instantly and probably never knew anything. Death was instant. It's not such a bad way to go actually, since death is so unexpected and rapid.
@OBJones28 No, not exactly... Janseen van Vuuren was an Holland student that was transferred in South Africa to do the marshall fot that GP... He was 23-years old... Also, the marshalls was only a volunteers that was payed a little bit despite the job they does...
@veroMagillino I knew it he was a Dutch and they said he was 19 years old. They were not given permission to go and help Zorzi. Pryce did not see Jansen and both were dead instantly. Van Vuuren was cut in half and Pryce's head was almost off. If Pryce seen Jansen on the road in a 180 mph speed, he could've crash and get pissed at Jansen for causing the accident.
@OBJones28 Oh, yes yes, excuse me, I don't had remembered very well... :) Janseen was a Dutch student and he was 19 yo... So, I confirm all yhat you said now, the marshall normally cannot cross the track that way, expecially in a section over an hill like that finish line... Tom didn't see the marshall that running in the direction of Zorzi's car, cause he was just behind another car, I didn't remember what the driver was but he has avoided them...
When this was shot, the damage was already done.... Tom Pryce was going 180MPH and hit a marshall carying a fire extinguisher.... both died on impact. the marshall was cut in half, only his intestines remained attached... Pryce's head was shattered open on impact, leaving an empty deformed skull
Pryce's head was intact. Unfortunately the fire extinguisher hit his helmet at an angle which wrenched the helmet sharply upward. The strap of the helmet nearly pulled Pryce's head off and that's what killed him. He was partly decapitated by his own helmet.
