This song is an athem for me as it was around at the same time that I was massively in love with my then flatmate - and I never got the courage together to ask if she wanted to be more than "just friends". ...and she did indeed just left polietly - d'oh!
I absolutely couldn't agree more! this is one of the most moving, hauntingly emotional pieces I have heard in my 53 years on this planet. Paint a target on our backs and prepare for the epiphany!
@pablo51874 Totally agree - still one of my personal top ten after all these years. That sax solo is just brilliant. I had the pleasure of seeing Hazel perform last year and though she's now into blues music she still has that wonderful gravelly voice.
One of the greatest sax solos in modern popular music (for me 'the' greatest). I read that Wesley is still in the music business; on the record production side with his son.
@HughieDixon Bob Holness didn't play the Saxophone. Not on this track, not on Baker Street, and not on any recording. Probably never in his life. It was a rumour started by Stuart Maconie for a laugh.
LOve this WOW forgot all about ehr till other day! N covering this:) BTW,... I think gaga ia also a modern day gr8.. apaert from her meat dress! lol thanks sandy:)
Called this up and all the other songs in your playlist came up along the bottom of my screen. We have such similar tastes! I actually thought it was one of my playlists, lol
Scares me to think that I saw The Breaking Glass film when it first came out. I must have been 14 or 15. Haven't seen the film for about 25 years or more. Don't even know if you can get it on DVD. Does anyone know if Hazel is still making a living out of music? Hope she's doing ok.
I will open myself to critisism here!!!! however I would say this is the most moving pop song ever made! In terms of production,it is simple, a voice and a saxaphone.......But when combined to this magnitude is there any need to complicate things?
@pattifelz Great artists and great songs don't allways get the recognition they deserve. Vienna By ULTRAVOX was kept of number one in Britain, By a useless piece of noevelty shit called SHADUP A YA FACE by an equally useless non discript Americano-italiano toss pot called JOE DOLCE ........in 1981
@nighterjay Hey nighterjay; 'what the matter you, gotta no respect, why you looker so sad, itsa not so bad, itsa nicer place, oh.. .. the rest you know by now! But hey, it could be worse! I could quote you 'The Birdie Song' (difficult I know!!!!) Love & Peace. X
The 80s will always be alive with classics like this in a decade full of classics happening every month, unlike the decades that followed that are just full of shit. Critics and others just did NOT appreciate anything at the time that mattered, it was all the overrated stuff that banged on about, when they banged on about anything at all.
hazel is living near a little village called greystones in co wicklow now . but then so is half the pop industry ......seen her once in my local of the beach house and the burnaby .....superb music and i always smoke after the sax
I was fortunate enough to be working on my mates bike outside his house beside Guildford Civic Hall in the early 80's. Hazel was appearing there that night. It was a hot summers day and the fire exits were open. The sax player must have been doing some sound levels and he played a good 15 minute version of the solo from this song. It just drifted out of the hall and wafted across Guildford. It was totally brilliant!
Awesome song. At least in the 70's & 80's most artists had a distinctly different style and voice (just like the cars of that era) - unlike the warbling and "talking" rap music nowadays where you would be hard pushed to tell one "singer" from another!
@SpikeManFortune So with other words, everybody has to like this cause you do? Everybody has to have the same taste, just cause it is your taste? I have given this a fair chance, but i do not like it.
@SpikeManFortune People have limited taste because they are herd animals. They are all sheep.
That GaGa thing should be giving all her income to the likes of Hazel, Toyah, Kate Fantazi, Katie Bush and many many more. I wonder how many under 25 year olds are saying 'what, who? iz they kikkin it then innit or iz they just on the telly innit' like, No wot eye meen innit.

One of the best sax solos EVER surely?! Check out the mean sax in many Kim Wilde singles too ('House Of Salome', 'She Hasn't Got Time 4 U' etc). How on earth can someone dislike this? It's like saying you don't like breathing!
Songs like this are from a bygone era when musicians were real and it took genuine talent to write a song such as this.
Just listen to the garbage in the current charts (Lady Ga Ga, Cher Lloyd, etc) and tell me these people have more talent than Hazel O'Connor.
