I'm not surprised by the fact that basic founders of the U.S were free masons. Remember that the leaders of the greek revolution of 1821 were also free masons in the majority (Alexander Ipsilantes for example), and some basic leaders of the french revolution and culture were also free masons. We have to think that there was an other time an other place, so these fraternities had a strong meaning, they were functioning as concentrating cores for some ideas to be procecced and established.
