@JwzADO070 We don't play soccer because we have better sports to play. You Dutch play soccer because that's your only sport. The British exported soccer and it spread because of its simplicity and easy transmission across cultural and linguistic barriers. Look at the Anglophone countries (I'll include India here): none of them save the UK and Ireland (where Gaelic football and hurling are also popular) have soccer as their top sport. In Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, rugby is king.

Canadians enjoy hockey above all, and we in America like our own rugby-based version of football. All these countries were cognizant and conversant with British culture, and all of them were aware of association football and the alternatives to association football. We chose sports other than soccer. The Netherlands and the continent "chose" soccer because you had nothing else to choose from.

We sing 'Duitsen bloed', which would translate to German blood nowadays. Originally it was 'Dietschen' blood though, which means the greater dutch/german area at that time. So it isn't about being from Germany.

@nektorhond We don't reference the German king in our anthem. In fact, Germany doesn't have a king and never has. We do however say that we're from Germanic blood in our anthem but that bears no reference to the country Germany only to the area called "Dietsland".

William of Nassau i am from german blood.

@nektorhond William of Orange was a nobleman from Nassau. In modern views he's German, but at that time the Netherlands was a part of the Holy Roman Empire (which is today Germany). The Dutch were oppressed by the king of Spain (German Emperor) who punished all protestants. This made William sick. That's what the anthem is all about. It's about William's feelings and the Dutch strugle for independence. This anthem is very peaceful, unlike what you think.

@Nassau1604 Aan jouw taalgebruik te zien heb ik hier te maken met een puber die ook nog eens mijn reactie (Nederlands) niet begrijpt. Ik heb helemaal geen Engelse bron gebruikt. Ik heb een stuk Nederlandse geschiedenis vertaalt naar een versimpelde Engelse weergave voor een buitenlander die daar naar verzocht. Met pubertjes die op de middelbare school toevallig iets over de 'Gouden Eeuw' hebben gelezen en niet eens de moeite nemen om hun stelling te onderbouwen ga ik niet in discussie.

@nektorhond Het feit dat Willem van Oranje uit wat nu Duitsland is komt heeft helemaal niks te maken met de tekst van ons volkslied. Trouwens, oorspronkelijk was het "van Duysten bloed" en dat refereerde aan een bond met je geboortegrond maar dat woord is echter verdwenen uit de Nederlandse taal dus zeggen wij hedendaags "van Duitse bloed"... voor zover als ik weet van een lied uit 1572

Deze versie vind ik een van de beste. Gewoon rustig aan, in plaats van zo snel zoals ze het meestal doen. Mooiste volkslied van allemaal. Het oudste volkslied ter wereld en een van de weinige die geen mars is of waar het militaire aspect niet centraal staat.

@Mattamster Het is wel een mars, alleen het militaire aspect hoor je inderdaad niet. Vooral Frankrijk, Italië en China hebben van die mars-volksliederen. Daarbij zijn de teksten van het Franse en Italiaanse volkslied nog eens zeer bloederig ook, terwijl het onze zeer vreedzaam is.
