any vids where one is actually breaking the sound barrier? this one is sweet though. i saw one in person, you could feel the afterburners in your chest.
it's not breaking the sound barrier, but the airplane it's designed for travel at speeds of 1.2mach under the soviet radar, so it don't need altitud, however if the plane broke the sound barrier at that altitud maybe the sonic boom destroy some glases, break walls and shake the camera...
I saw the b-1 one fly by like that before a nascar race a few years ago. It was the coolest plane i've ever seen it gave me goose bumps and i described it by saying it felt like it rocked your soul. I've seen the stealth fly by and blue angels and some stealth f-18's and nothing compares to how cool the b-1 is. Its 10 second fly by was a million times cooler than the nascar race!!!!!!!
no it's not breaking the sound barrier. You were correct that vapors were condensing in areas of differential pressure. Don't listen to GTA supra, he's not a B-1 crew chief...
@ganjasaurusrex The Praundt-Glauert singularity can occur just about any time, but it is common and widely known as a transsonic effect. Most airshows have speed restrictions far below mach 1, at .9 mach. This B-1 is probably barely at or just below the neighborhood of transsonic flight, which some consider .9-1.2 mach.
@tefrumpzax No, not at all. There are plenty of supersonic corridors in the United States in sparsely populated areas. If you're in the right place at the right time, you can hear a sonic boom. People hear them all the time, but they are mostly insignificant and they don't know what they are. They wouldn't cause any kind of hospitalization or injury at all.
@b1cc2 See, I was told by one of the officials on the AIR FORCE BASE I went to go see an airshow on and I asked him, "Could the b-1 have gone full speed" He said, "No, the sound from the after burn and the sound of the sonic boom would cause peoples ears to bleed out and cause glass to shatter" also, the B1 did a fly over under 400ft. Just watch the video I posted, you'll see how low it is.

If it were breaking the sound barrier, you wouldn't have been able to hear it at all before it passed by.

I compare a high speed B1 flyby to a fast moving freight train....
You're standing there watching it coming at you and you say to yourself, it ain't movin' that fast...
Suddenly it is on top of you going by and it is "holy shit!" time !!!
Something so sleek but also fairly large rockin' the WORLD with swept wings and over 120,000 pounds of thrust.
Ya gotta see it to believe it.

Is it breaking the sound barrier or is that just water vapor coming off of the wings?
