    We just have to accept that if we use the internet for anything, personal info is going to be available. All we can do is be as careful as possible what info and who has it, and access to it.

    I think you miss the larger point. there is nothing you can do online that is not recorded and stored somewhere. Google is just one of the more obvious companies.

    To get out and off, you would need to go to a stage before the internet, and even then, your info is electronically recorded by government departments, such as Dept of Motor vehicles.

    That leaves going into a cave, and i personally will pass on that. :)

As things stand it's a free for all, employers, friends, neighbour, enemy's, potential partners, government's etc can make judgements on you..     Much as I would like to think this wont happen, much of it already does. 10 years ago I was chatting with someone online, and with just a little info i was able to determine where she lived to within 500 meters.

    Now 10 years later, with that same in formation, I could send them a satellite picture, with co ordinances to within a meter. In fact I have been able to find peoples addresses quite easily in a fair few cases. I would never use that info though, but the tech is there.

  • Ok lets assume that now Google wont do anything with the information. Its not what they will do now, its what they could do in the future.

    In Australia we have a similar situation. The Government is going to install an internet filter, or at least that is the plan. While I this government is will do this in good faith, it is future governments that concern me, once this is in place the opportunity to abuse is that much easier. Without adequate checks and balances we have no recourse

    Ezixax, your in my age group, are you so sure Google will do the right thing always? Perhaps I'm just more cynical. :) I don’t mind giving out my info, and in many cases will, but I would like that choice. My understanding is that records by google at kept almost indefinitely, everything you have seen via google searches for example, open a new page, open a new google search page, top right you will see your google email, search for something, that is now recorded and time-stamped

    This is not a bad thing. Searching for what might be embarrassing, no problems, google wont tell anyone ... unless there is a court order, or your country decided to change how such information can be accessed, but you behave yourself right? All the people who use your computer are all above reproach, and don’t look at anything potentially embarrassing, or just outright illegal right?

    This above is only a scenario, are you still sure google and your government, can be forever trusted?

    Take your info from the internet? Not possible. Assuming you managed to do it. as soon as you accessed the new and sign up or buy something, or just browse, your info is back in.

    The best bet is to use an online persona like I do. 'Knightyme' is who i am online, very few know my real name and address as connected to each other, but those connections are nonetheless out there as well.

  • @Knightyme everything you enter in the search engine, your gmails, the pages you visit with chrome (incognito wont help) what you do on google heart, your phone call from a nexus or an android, th thing you do on youtube/ blogger/ any website by google it is ALL stored, in googleplex, linked to your ip number... peter

    As for my IP it is a dynamic type so it changes from time to time, mostly if I restart my modem for whatever reason, so my Google account will have dozens of IPs recorded. Although I the person could be found via my IPs, it would require my ISP saying I was using that IP at this time on this day. The average person does not have access to both IP and real user details, My Knightyme persona is by far the most obvious user of the IPs

    Another way could be using ip switch. Which switches ur ip inside your isp. double loop.

    Another way (which i add to the first), is using anonymouse(dot)org on an old firefox browser, suggest two point two point zero..

  • @Knightyme A "pseudo" is indeed a good idea, but yes i managed to empty the index of search results with the privacy content that you don't want in.

    Obviously, if you buy something somewhere, you're info will be available, but there's a few tricks you can use for not displaying/giving away your private information.

    At the base, i was speaking more about companies that don't wanna index their list of emails which is on their site, or other important professionnal data that should not be out there

  • I don't agree with the take on this at all. The continual use of "Google wants to own" is transparent as a scaremongering exercise. Many of the services and products it runs and owns began as small ideas and projects that Google employees and Google users saw as beneficial and useful services and extended from there.

    And privacy is very much a direct concern of Google. External use of personal information must be explicitly allowed by the user, and even internal use is very restricted.

    The saying 'the path to hell is paved with good intentions' comes to mind. Although Google the entity might be doing this for altruistic reasons. It is the people that we should be concerned with. - Are they taking on too much too fast?

    While no one person probably has access to everything, the question still remains, can we trust those with access to the information?

    I don't have a problem about my info out there, but am aware others do, and it is for them that I mirror this.

    As an example, here on youtube, you log in. no problems. but you likely have this account associated with Gmail, if you do a google search, look to the top right of the reply screen, you might find your logged in, under your youtube account name or gmail account name.

    It is said that your google searches are archived for a year and a half. Have *you* googled anything recently that you might find embarrassing?

    These are just 3 things that are interlinked. Food for thought perhaps.

    Though I do find the aggregation of so much data somewhat alarming and potentially dangerous for a host of reasons, I do not feel that Google—at the risk of referring to the company as some kind of quasi-sentient entity—is a puppet mask for a secret cabals nefarious and clandestine machinations to control your life. It is a successful company, that is expanding its business model into new markets. Of course that can always be a dangerous thing in and of itself.

    The reason why Google is so successful is because it's like the advertisers dream. purpose of advertising is to have people be interested in your product. if you can narrow that possibility to advertise to a likely of people who'll be interested in, you'll do it right? for that Google needs more information.
