I don't have so much a fear of flying as a nausea of flying. I'm not a fan of the sudden rising and falling at takeoff and landing, and turbulence sucks too. I describe it as like being in an elevator going up and down very fast. Last time I had to fly I took Dramamine so I can't even imagine how sick I'd feel without it
I have a question to people who know a bit more about aviation (lamers, bloggers, plane-spotters - AS YOU WERE!). Turbulence occurs mostly under altitude of 11-10 km. At altitudes above 12 km (FL390) it's rare and very weak. So why not fly THERE?
@Maloy7800 Would love to but my Cessna 172 service ceiling is much lower plus no oxygen plus non-pressurized cabin. Only the airlines and the expensive planes go high enough. We have to grunge along in the weather.
@Maloy7800 Well aircraft performance is affected by it's overall aerodynamic design, the atmospheric condtions and it's weight. It's during the first portion of the flight that the airplane is the heaviest, the more you climb the less speed margin you have to fly the plane safely. As trubulence occur during flucuations in wind and speed direction, the sudden loss or gain of speed can cause the aircraft to get out of the enveloppe.
New Airbus A320, 330 and 380, Boeing 777 and 787 have what they call "gust suppression system". In other words they are less bumpy than other airplanes. It doesn't mean you won't feel turbulence at all, but the flight will be MUCH more comfortable.
I don't want to sound ungrateful, but NO, this is NOT helpful. :-) You're simply explaining what's happening, not reassuring that's it's safe.
For people who are afraid of turbulence, I want to say - IT'S SAFE! You're perfectly fine, the plane won't plunge from the skies, the wings will NOT come off, you'll land safely. Just be sure that pilots see it, feel it, are aware of it and will do everything to avoid it.
@Maloy7800 turbulence is safe, until it isn't anymore. But what CaptStacey is telling you is that pilots strive to keep the safety to it's maximum, in this case by avoiding turbulence, unfortunately it is not always possible to ensure you a smooth ride but pilots will take adequate decisions to keep their passengers and themselves safe and trust me we know how to do so...

let me tell you one thing people, scientists found out that statistically for a plane crash to occur you would have to fly everyday for MORE THAN 15,000 years! think about this everytime you go flying...
@AliGator396 incorrect, the pitot tubes on the aircraft were frozen due to super cooled water droplets, it is an incredible feat of science that this is even possible, thunderstroms sir, were not the cause.
@AliGator396 there is no proof on that accident. The box that records ecerything that goes on in the cockpit has never been found. Investigators believe that this was a pilot error. But we dont know what really happened and most likely never will.
I'm pretty sure they throttled back to 250 knots IAS because they were descending.... You can see the Vertical Speed Hold selector at -2600 FPM, and after he sets it to 250 knots IAS it increases to -2800 FPM. I've never heard of slowing down an aircraft to avoid turbulence.

I was never afraid to fly until last summer..I was on a flight across the Pacific and we hit a monstrous turbulence. It was so severe that at one point the cabin lights went off and was completely dark for a few seconds. Women were screaming, men were holding onto their arm rest for dear life, it was crazy. It lasted for about 20minutes or so. I remember the guy who sat next to me was puking all over from motion sickness. It was the worst fight I have ever been on.
what should say....in 2005 when we flew to the philippines to visit my relatives (in august TAIFUN SEASON) we flew right through a gigantic storm system over the south china sea.... i was on the toilet and hurried back to my seat. i wanted to sit down and then the plane just DROPPED a few meters and i FELL into my seat. THAT was scary...XD
Okay question to all you wonderful pilots. We were flying from Florida to Dallas last April and apparently flying over some rough weather. The turbulence was the scariest I've ever experienced. The plane would just fall, so much that people were freaking out.The pilot ordered the flight attendants to take their jump seats. WHICH FREAKED ME OUT BAD! They saw a man get out of his seat and yelled at him via intercom. Anyways, why was it so bad? Were we in any danger?
I am scared at turbulence during take offs, I was in this flight, taking off from JFk on a 757, minutes after take off, the plane started to enter in a turbulence area, one was big enough (the sensation was like if the plane stalling) to make passengers to scream, although seconds later we all were laughing.
When I came to canada from germany, we had sudden drops over the ocean. We had a few drops and passegers started screaming. 3 had little injuries because they were not wearing their seatbelts. However, the captain made an announcement that there is no danger.
There is little to be afraid of when flying... pilots constantly receive weather updates from airplanes ahead and also in the last 10 years of aviation have developed a system that bounces a signal ahead to measure the density and mass of air... a pilot will never intentionally fly into turbulence... If you do encounter turbulence the best thing is to remember is that there have been billions of dollars spent in researching flight safety... thousands of plane are in the sky right now... =)
Been scared of turbulance since last year when we hit a bad one. Shaked violently and counted at least 5 drops. Though there was a thunderstorm around, I was left with the fear ever since.
Recovered a bit on my last flights(one which was bumpy all the way except for the last hour, 5 hour flight.) but still nervous. Going on an 8 hour flight soon, hope I can do it!
I was flying into Dominican Republic at night, and it was stormy and thunderstorms. I have the worst fear of flying out of anyone I know, and I was about to pass out because I was so scared.
I'm so scared of flying. I was fine for the first 35 yrs of my life flying at least 4 flights yearly, then I had baby 3 yrs ago. Now petrified, get anxiety attacks, sweaty hands.
In past 2 weeks I've been on 4 flights. 2 for holidays, 2 for work. Work flights were 25 seaters, 2 hour flight and I got real scared. Will need to fly more for work on 6 seaters which I've heard can really shake around. Looking forward to watching more tubes to combat my fears.
@MotivationSeeker a flying lesson worked for me.I was bitten by the bug and I continued with lessons. I went solo last year (2008) :) When we experience a sudden reduction of our normal1G, we think we are falling, but in a fast moving vehicle even a long smooth dip in the road will feel like a sharp dip on a slower road. If you only want to try one lesson for fear of flying ask the instrustor to demonstrate some gentle stall avoidence procedures with and without flaps.
Turbulence is not my biggest fear of flying... there are turbulence going by train as well! Last week i experienced a turbulence i've never felt before (i was travelling on my own too!) and it was just before landing in the middle of night... up & down and it was very windy outside! but i'm still alive! though i had a flightnightmare last night crashing into the sea i'm still able to fly on my own!
before everytime im inside the plane and the flight becomes bumpy because of turbulence i kept telling myself everything will be ok!but now few months back because of what happen to airfrance flight that crashes in the atlantic because of turbulence..i dont know if i can still convince my self out of it...
I don't know before I'm not scared of turbulence but now I'am ...hahah but yeah it's more dangerous taking off and landing than in turbulence more airplane accidents happen during take off and landing....just a question when havinf a tubulence is it more felt at the back of the plae???
calmwaters555 - turbulance is felt all over the aircraft. However, what is different is that the further Aft you go, the more you will feel the sensation of Yaw on the aircraft as it pivots laterally around its central point.
Well my theory is that if something was ever to happen and I want a remote chance of surviving, I need to be alert in case I do hit the ground alive....:)
I suffer severe, even debilitating, panic attacks as a result of turbulence. I become a liability, not an asset, under these conditions. While I can think straight (I know I'm in a panic attack, I know the plane isn't moving significantly, I can hold logical conversation, etc.), I just cannot *act* straight.
As such, it's just plain better for the rest of the crew and passengers if I'm out like a light.
Oh I know what you mean. I am just the same. Although I can't even think straight when it happens. The only thing that helps is that Southwest flight attendant that told me that no plane has ever come down just because of turbulence. I keep telling myself that. Maybe it helps you too. Good luck:)
Thank you for that info from the SW. I didn't know that and it's really giving me a lot of comfort. It's the turbulence that scares me a lot, but that info really helps! THANK YOU
I am very glad I could help. It is the only thing that calms me down and actually it has really helped me and I am much calmer during turbulence now. Maybe I should add that this girl, the flight attendent at SW, also said she has had a flight where the turbulence was that bad that they had to end the food service and CRAWL back trough the alley to their seats. I have never experienced that but during turbulence I remind myself that it could even get that bad and we'd still be okay...
well you can sleep because if something happens (which i dont ope for), people will scream.
I used to be scared too when there was a turbulence but here is what helped me.
Turbulence on an airplane is like driving a car quickly over a bumpy road. So what I did was, everytime the plane started shaking, I closed my eyes and just imagined that I was in a car. In order not to hear the airplanes engines, i put music in my ears and it worked. Now I enjoy the bumbs.
Pilots avoid severe turbolences because they know that there are passegers that are affected by that. The aircraft itself is not in any danger. What I did was taking flying lessons and this is where I learned all this. Air travel is one of the safest in the world. Chance of dying in a car accident, train, or even a bicycle accident are much higher.
@LSBonnPower Severe Turbulence, not much of a problem - but the aircraft can be uncontrollable at times. problem comes with airspeed. too fast and the airframe can overstress
@LSBonnPower -the aircraft itself is not in a danger? does your instructor tell u that? he might be want u to kill u and the pax ;) it will be danger if u enter the jetstream dude..cx the isotach to choose the right path to enter the jetstream for a safe flight
NO its not in danger. In fact, a jetsream is a wind that is blowing in the troposphere. This is the turbulance most flights from europe to northern america experience. An aircraft could be in danger if it flies into a tornado but not because there is wind blowing. If jetstreams would be dangerous, do you know how many airplanes would crash or crashland?
@LSBonnPower because the airliners have to choose the right airways with a reference using the isotach chart, thats why no plane crash because of the jetstream, did u know te jetstream is 200NM wider and 12000FT deep?? and the wind is more than 300-600KTS..imagine your aircraft enter it? do u think the structural of the aircraft can take it? hell no dude!
@LSBonnPower this is my 1st time hear someone said that the jetstream is not danger?? u have to read a lot of book before u killed someone onboard =) read the book dude, dont simply talk but dont even know about it
@LSBonnPower if you said the aircraft will be affect by a tornado which is 66kts will be consider as a tornado, but why the upper wind ( jetstream which is much much more higher in term of speed u said that its ok to fly into a jetstream??? ) think about it before u make a statement..
@LSBonnPower all airline will using the jetstream as an advantage but it's not goin to use the highest speed of jetstream, they will select the lowest speed of jetstream to cruise at certain level, because jetstream speed up to 300kts to 600kts.. aircraft travel at 800km/h at higher level but do u want your aircraft travel into the jetstream which is travel at 300kts to 600kts?? imagine if your aircraft travel at 350KTS indicated / 850km/h + 300kts = 650KTS / 1203km/h? its beyond the airframe lmt
@adypilot89 I disagree, in that particular case you are talking about a strong tailwind, which would affect the ground speed! the aircraft would still fly at the same indicated, and remember V speeds such as Va, Vo, or Vno are realated to KIAS.....my 2 cents.
@adypilot89 yea exactly! U didnt understand what I said.....another example would be flying a 172 at an indicated of 100KIAS with a 100kts of head wind the result is a ground speed of 0. Flying the same 172 at the same airspeed but this time the wind is from behind(tailwind) the indicated still would be 100KIAS but your groundspeed would be 200kts. The same principles apply to high speed winds from a jetstream. Limitations of a/c are based on indicated KIAS Hope that solved the misunderstanding
@gilz16 limitation a/c base on VNE,VNO..indicated airspeed still the same but when it travel more than 300KTS we change it to mach number...dude we're talking bout jet operating in higher level and jetstream not the bloody small C172
@LSBonnPower Thats not entirely true. Chances of dying in a plane accident are astronomically higher than the chances of dying in a car accident. They just base it off the amount of car crashes compared to plane crashes. Which is a dumb comparison in my mind cause there is a whole lot more cars than planes. Plus not everyone on the road is trained personnel lol. Also, severe turbulence CAN bring planes down.
There are Millions of planes travelling every day and there are millions of cars driving around every day. Cars crash every day somewhere. Some crashes are no big deal some are severe and some are deadly. Plane crashes are usually deadly due to the strong impact with the ground. But even thoudh we have millions of airplanes in the air every day, the crash maybe 2-3 times a year. Airline pilots are also specially trained. Getting a drivers license is peanuts.
@LSBonnPower I know I know. I guess all I'm trying to say is that car crashes and plane crashes shouldn't even be compared cause the conditions are completely different. Im willing to bet the majority of people on earth feel safer in a car than a plane no matter the statistics.
that could be true. But than again, what you have to consider is that car is a very common type of transportation. Most people use cars on a daily basis. Now how many times are people flying on planes, Maybe 2 to 4 times a year for vacation. This is also something that you have to take in consideration. But yes, there are lot of things that go around this fear. But statistics do matter. Cars and planes travel by the millions everyday and planes dont come down everyday.
@bruno84 of course there is a limit to it. But that is in extreme cases. Thats if there is a storm or something like that going on. Thats when it might be dangerous. Its like a car. You constantly drive over bumbs and the car shakes a bit. Its not harmful for the car. However, if there is a huge hole on the road, you avoid it because it could cause some damage. Turbulance is nothing more than air working against the plane. An airplane could even get hit by 1000 lightings and nothing would happen
I have to face my fear of flying in July and i really am not looking forward to it, all i think of is plane crashes, terrorist attacks. Seriously im really scared.
Flying is the safest way of transportation we have today, remember a plane takes off and lands every minute somewhere in the world. Driving is much more dangerous, and that's a fact.
Feel free to send me a message if any of you have any technical or general questions about flying, I'll answer them the best I can.
Well this makes better sense than what I thought! LOL I always wondered WTF were "air pockets" when it's AIR we're flying in so how can there be pockets!?!?! Man, I'm petrified of flying but gotta suck it up as I fly out in 3 days. LOL Turbulence and take offs are my worse! I can't read as i find I read the same paragraph over and over. LOL Oh and if you look of Midlle East descent, I guarantee you i will hold your penis IF you go to the bathroom because I'm watching your every move dude! LOL
Don't worry about it... try to enjoy it! I love it when it gets bumpy-- it's like paying for a roller coaster ride and travel ticket all in one! :) Just remember to keep your seat belt on whenever possible and you'll have fun and be where-ever it is your going safely.
I once flew from NY to London and it was bumpy THE ENTIRE FLIGHT......but I worried all for nothing.........we were fine. I was the only one on that flight that didn't sleep!
Just think.. if you r driving on a bumpy road then it would be just the same....

What company did you fly with?

United airlines to Japan.

Turbulence caused by thunderstorm clouds can be extremely dangerous. Up and down drafts can reach about 6000' a minute!
Thunderstorm clouds are prominent around the ITCZ. The air france flight through along the ITCZ. it is very possible that turbulence caused the crash.

what should say....in 2005 when we flew to the philippines to visit my relatives (in august TAIFUN SEASON) we flew right through a gigantic storm system over the south china sea.... i was on the toilet and hurried back to my seat. i wanted to sit down and then the plane just DROPPED a few meters and i FELL into my seat.

Aperz 2 years ago
We are about to make this trip again. So I'm very very scared. Is Frontier a good airline?
Aperz 2 years ago
not necessarily. Could have also been something at the airport like an airplane was on the runway or other airport issues.
LSBonnPower 2 years ago
I am scared at turbulence during take offs, I was in this flight, taking off from JFk on a 757, minutes after take off, the plane started to enter in a turbulence area, one was big enough (the sensation was like if the plane stalling) to make passengers to scream, although seconds later we all were laughing.
racsito39 2 years ago
When I came to canada from germany, we had sudden drops over the ocean. We had a few drops and passegers started screaming. 3 had little injuries because they were not wearing their seatbelts. However, the captain made an announcement that there is no danger.
LSBonnPower 2 years ago

ProEthan 2 years ago

Last week i experienced a turbulence i've never felt before (i was travelling on my own too!) and it was just before landing in the middle of night... up & down and it was very windy outside! but i'm still alive! though i had a flightnightmare last night crashing into the sea i'm still able to fly on my own!
filbunk 2 years ago
before everytime im inside the plane and the flight becomes bumpy because of turbulence i kept telling myself everything will be ok!but now few months back because of what happen to airfrance flight that crashes in the atlantic because of turbulence..i dont know if i can still convince my self out of it...
YELNCRUISE 2 years ago
It is still unknown why air france actually crashed but they are pretty sure that it was a pilot error.

I don't know before I'm not scared of turbulence but now I'am ...hahah but yeah it's more dangerous taking off and landing than in turbulence more airplane accidents happen during take off and landing....just a question when havinf a tubulence is it more felt at the back of the plae???
calmwaters555 2 years ago
calmwaters555 - turbulance is felt all over the aircraft. However, what is different is that the further Aft you go, the more you will feel the sensation of Yaw on the aircraft as it pivots laterally around its central point.

I don't want to be sleepy if something happens!!!!!!!!
MilliVanilli2007 2 years ago
You damn well better believe *I* want to be out like an effin' light if something happens. :-)
hoser4 2 years ago
Well my theory is that if something was ever to happen and I want a remote chance of surviving, I need to be alert in case I do hit the ground alive....:)
MilliVanilli2007 2 years ago
I suffer severe, even debilitating, panic attacks as a result of turbulence. I become a liability, not an asset, under these conditions. While I can think straight (I know I'm in a panic attack, I know the plane isn't moving significantly, I can hold logical conversation, etc.), I just cannot *act* straight.
As such, it's just plain better for the rest of the crew and passengers if I'm out like a light.
hoser4 2 years ago
Oh I know what you mean. I am just the same. Although I can't even think straight when it happens. The only thing that helps is that Southwest flight attendant that told me that no plane has ever come down just because of turbulence. I keep telling myself that. Maybe it helps you too. Good luck:)
MilliVanilli2007 2 years ago
Thank you for that info from the SW. I didn't know that and it's really giving me a lot of comfort. It's the turbulence that scares me a lot, but that info really helps! THANK YOU
tarahtms 2 years ago
I am very glad I could help. It is the only thing that calms me down and actually it has really helped me and I am much calmer during turbulence now. Maybe I should add that this girl, the flight attendent at SW, also said she has had a flight where the turbulence was that bad that they had to end the food service and CRAWL back trough the alley to their seats. I have never experienced that but during turbulence I remind myself that it could even get that bad and we'd still be okay...

hey maybe you want to read my comment that i wrote to MilliVanilli2007 about turbulence. Maybe it can help you :-)
LSBonnPower 2 years ago
well you can sleep because if something happens (which i dont ope for), people will scream.
LSBonnPower 2 years ago
Pilots avoid severe turbolences because they know that there are passegers that are affected by that. The aircraft itself is not in any danger. What I did was taking flying lessons and this is where I learned all this. Air travel is one of the safest in the world. Chance of dying in a car accident, train, or even a bicycle accident are much higher.
Good luck and hope I helped
LSBonnPower 2 years ago 34
@LSBonnPower Severe Turbulence, not much of a problem - but the aircraft can be uncontrollable at times. problem comes with airspeed. too fast and the airframe can overstress
NaFenn12 1 year ago
@NaFenn12
yeah but that is usually on rare occasions that it happens.
LSBonnPower 1 year ago
@NaFenn12 i agree with you
adypilot89 1 year ago
@LSBonnPower -the aircraft itself is not in a danger? does your instructor tell u that? he might be want u to kill u and the pax ;) it will be danger if u enter the jetstream dude..cx the isotach to choose the right path to enter the jetstream for a safe flight
adypilot89 1 year ago
@adypilot89
LSBonnPower 1 year ago
@LSBonnPower because the airliners have to choose the right airways with a reference using the isotach chart, thats why no plane crash because of the jetstream, did u know te jetstream is 200NM wider and 12000FT deep?? and the wind is more than 300-600KTS..imagine your aircraft enter it? do u think the structural of the aircraft can take it? hell no dude!
adypilot89 1 year ago
@LSBonnPower this is my 1st time hear someone said that the jetstream is not danger?? u have to read a lot of book before u killed someone onboard =) read the book dude, dont simply talk but dont even know about it
adypilot89 1 year ago
@LSBonnPower if you said the aircraft will be affect by a tornado which is 66kts will be consider as a tornado, but why the upper wind ( jetstream which is much much more higher in term of speed u said that its ok to fly into a jetstream??? ) think about it before u make a statement..
adypilot89 1 year ago
@adypilot89
did you actually know that airplanes traveling between europe and north america are using the jetsream to an advantage
LSBonnPower 1 year ago
@LSBonnPower all airline will using the jetstream as an advantage but it's not goin to use the highest speed of jetstream, they will select the lowest speed of jetstream to cruise at certain level, because jetstream speed up to 300kts to 600kts.. aircraft travel at 800km/h at higher level but do u want your aircraft travel into the jetstream which is travel at 300kts to 600kts?? imagine if your aircraft travel at 350KTS indicated / 850km/h + 300kts = 650KTS / 1203km/h? its beyond the airframe lmt
adypilot89 1 year ago
@adypilot89 I disagree, in that particular case you are talking about a strong tailwind, which would affect the ground speed! the aircraft would still fly at the same indicated, and remember V speeds such as Va, Vo, or Vno are realated to KIAS.....my 2 cents.
gilz16 1 year ago
@gilz16 im talking about the jetstream/upper level wind dude..not about the fuckin tailwind..
adypilot89 1 year ago
@adypilot89 yea exactly! U didnt understand what I said.....another example would be flying a 172 at an indicated of 100KIAS with a 100kts of head wind the result is a ground speed of 0. Flying the same 172 at the same airspeed but this time the wind is from behind(tailwind) the indicated still would be 100KIAS but your groundspeed would be 200kts. The same principles apply to high speed winds from a jetstream. Limitations of a/c are based on indicated KIAS Hope that solved the misunderstanding
gilz16 1 year ago
@gilz16 limitation a/c base on VNE,VNO..indicated airspeed still the same but when it travel more than 300KTS we change it to mach number...dude we're talking bout jet operating in higher level and jetstream not the bloody small C172
adypilot89 1 year ago
@adypilot89 yea it is mach, the c172 example was for explanation purposes so you could get my point.
gilz16 1 year ago
@LSBonnPower
corection, severe turbulence can damege aircrafts system, each aircraft have amax turbulence force.
sanfooor23 1 year ago
@LSBonnPower Thats not entirely true. Chances of dying in a plane accident are astronomically higher than the chances of dying in a car accident. They just base it off the amount of car crashes compared to plane crashes. Which is a dumb comparison in my mind cause there is a whole lot more cars than planes. Plus not everyone on the road is trained personnel lol. Also, severe turbulence CAN bring planes down.
MrCrazyfucker123 1 year ago
@MrCrazyfucker123
LSBonnPower 1 year ago
@LSBonnPower I know I know. I guess all I'm trying to say is that car crashes and plane crashes shouldn't even be compared cause the conditions are completely different. Im willing to bet the majority of people on earth feel safer in a car than a plane no matter the statistics.
MrCrazyfucker123 1 year ago
@MrCrazyfucker123
that could be true.
LSBonnPower 1 year ago
@LSBonnPower I agree with you, statistics show that flying is safter than staying at home!

@LSBonnPower Severe turbulence is potentially dangerous for aircraft too. As a person who took flight lessons you should know that!
bruno84 9 months ago
@bruno84 of course there is a limit to it. But that is in extreme cases. Thats if there is a storm or something like that going on. Thats when it might be dangerous. Its like a car. You constantly drive over bumbs and the car shakes a bit. Its not harmful for the car. However, if there is a huge hole on the road, you avoid it because it could cause some damage. Turbulance is nothing more than air working against the plane. An airplane could even get hit by 1000 lightings and nothing would happen
LSBonnPower 9 months ago

Flying is the safest way of transportation we have today, remember a plane takes off and lands every minute somewhere in the world. Driving is much more dangerous, and that's a fact.
Feel free to send me a message if any of you have any technical or general questions about flying, I'll answer them the best I can.
