Washington and Michigan are my favorite NCAA football programs - although I pull for Wa. when they go head to head. I went to the 92' Rose Bowl and 93' will always be known as the Ty Wheatly game. I also went to the 2001 game just days before 911. All hell broke loose on Mi. in that 4th qtr. When Huskie Stadium gets loud its LOUD. At the time I thought this was one of the greatest games. Michigan and the Big House got its pay back. For many Washington this is the game that derailed the program.
@surrendered98 always enjoy washington beating usc :) and i'd love to go to a game at husky stadium someday, i believe it got over 130 decibels there once. hope you guys get it on track soon as well as us. sorry you were stuck with tyrone willingham for a while, lol
@surrendered98 I am a Washington grad and a lifelong Michigan fan. I went to this game, and given the game the previous year, a UW fan sitting next to me offered me a UW t-shirt.
@WolverineHistorian - thanks for posting this game. We were at both the loss at UW and the win at UM and this was sweet payback. One thing worth noting is this BigHouse game was the loudest I've ever witnessed the crowd there. At one point, Carr turned around, nodded and mouthed "WOW" toward the crowd while players were clapping. It was jumpin' and if the fans could bring that kind of noise to every game....
I hope Phillip makes a full recovery. This is probably a moment he'll never forget for the rest of his life though. Thanks for the memories, Phillip! :)
Not sure if anyone here knows about this, but Philip Brabbs, the kicker who hit the winning field for Michigan in this game, is suffering from Multiple Myeloma. He's starting his cancer treatment next month :-(
lol thats just awesome both kickers are missing and it comes down to him and how perfect was it when the announcer says either he misses it or makes it and is remeberd forever lol that was just sweet good for him
either that was bad defense or text book blocking that perry ran the touch down on at the beggining of the video.....do you think michigan will ever be successful with that style of offense they are trying to implement. the big ten is not good when it comes to recruiting perimiter players like the other conferences...what do you thing
well michigan already has commitments from several players that will work well in the spread system, they should be back to michigan standards in a couple years
Hey, I just wanted to wish him luck on the upcoming season. Who knows? Maybe if he makes the pro's, he can write an auto-biography like Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson of the Dallas Cowboys. Minus his mistakes, of course.
no michigan allowed washington to stay in this game with missed field goals and turnovers. but you are right that michigan definitely gave the game away at washington. not to be an asshole, but michigan definitely outplayed washington in both games and deserved to win both.
Hey - it's not my fault you guys didn't block Omare Lowe on the field goal attempt that was blocked. Blame it on Lloyd. If UM wanted to win that game, they should have played better! LOL. No, seriously, I'd say 2001 was pretty flukey. Don't agree with your justification on 2002 . . . we outplayed Michigan and had the game won. Love that 'fumble call' that was clearly not a fumble as well.
We had 418 yards of offense in that 2002 game to UW's 390. I hardly think that's being outplayed.
UW benefited from two UM turnovers (just like in 01) inside their 15 yard line which gave them 2 touchdowns. Brabbs missed two chip shot field goals. The game should never have ended the way it did since UM outplayed UW. But things happened. The fumble was questionable, no doubt it. But again, it should never have come down to that last FG.
@commodorefan2 They can't be worse than Pac-10 refs. In fact, I think the Pac-10/12 fired like 10 of their football officials this offseaon. Way overdue. College officiating in general is pretty bad. We got reamed like no tomorrow at Notre Dame two years ago on a TD that was clear as day that still got overturned on a video review. I still can't get over that one. Bottom line - if you're on the road, you're asking to get screwed.
In my cottage when this game first aired I was in the whole game. When he kicked his 3rd kick I knew it was going in. I want to see a guy like Bennie Jopru. Whatever happened to him?
I remember watching this game with my cousin in his basement. We were begging for a hail mary because the kicking game had done NOTHING all game, but when that ball sailed through those uprights he jumped so high that he almost broke every finger on both his hands because we had forgotten his celing was low! :P Freaking epic game!
i remember when these were two of the most dominant programs in college football...now they are both emberrasing even though i am a UW fan i hope Michigan can turn it around because college FB just isnt the same without Michigan being elite
Are you really comparing Michigan and Washington right now? Washington has been awful for almost a decade, Michigan had one horribly pathetic year, but Michigan has a looooong ways to go to achieve the same 'rock bottom' that UW is now.
im not comparing them....im just saying that when i first started watching college football...these were two traditionally top schools, and it needs to get back to that. no need to get emotional dont worry im not dissing the wolverines lol
i was at this game when i was twelve besides the penn state game in 05 best mich game ive ever been to but i remeber when he made the field goal i tried to high five the guy next to me and we whiffed hahaha
I love the random stranger of a fan that sits next to you at games. You can be their best friend in the world if something good happens. I remember last year at the Lions home opener vs Minnesota. When Hanson kicked the game winning field goal in OT. This guy and I were cheast pumping and giving high fives. Good times.
There weren't that bad. They made the Sun Bowl, and they beat #3 Washington State in Pullman. They had chances to have a much better season, but this loss among other blown chances cost them.
Tell me about blown chances, since 2002,Huskies been blowning their chances in tight games.Ty did a great job recruiting this year but it sad that he won't get a chance to see them turn the program around. Its impossible for him to work with poor recruits that Gilbertson brought in.
i remember this like it was yesterday our kicker missed everything and i left the room because i was sure he would miss the 45 yarder, then my dad started cheering we won we won, anyways biggest mistake of my life doubting the wolverines
I was expecting him to miss it too. I watched the game from home and tried not to cover my eyes when he was getting ready to kick it. When I saw that it was good, I jumped off the couch screaming and broke a lamp in the process.
it was me, my dad and for the first time my little brother came to the game. the entire time he complained how hot it was. well with about 3 min left after the guy missed another kick my dad thought it was over and wanted to leave cuz my brother was complaining. we were almost to the golf course when some people who were listening to the game on their radio started cheering. i asked what happened and they told me. our seats were right next to the goal post that kick went threw. i was sooo pissed
Not quite as great as the 10/15/05 game, though. ;)
Most painful loss of my life, but it has to rank as one of the greatest games in college football history. You've got a program with an incredible legacy, and it's almost always a great game when we hook up (even though you've had our number...nine straight times).
Tyrece Butler made a few key plays on the final drive. 1 being that great catch, the other was the "fumble recovery" that we got away with murder on. Butler never made top WR and was passed up by so Edwards & sr Bellamy in his jr season. in his sr season, the corps of Avant & Breaston joined Edwards...
This was by far the best game I was at in person. I was lucky enough to somehow score a single student section seat 36 rows up. I actually quit my job to go to the game. It still gives me goosebumps to watch that. We were going crazy for like 10 minutes afterwards. Ahh, the greatness that is college football in any form.
This and the Ohio State game in 2003 were probably the best games I saw in person at Michigan Stadium. In third would be the Penn State OT game in 2002.
what a game...i remember it was 90 degrees and humid...best michigan game i've ever been to. i got knocked down 5 rows when brabbs nailed the field goal
i like how Brabbs gets benched after two misses, then Nienberg comes in and misses a field goal, so Carr puts Brabbs back in and he makes the game winning field goal
i watched about 1/2 of this game and i was convinced we were gonna lose, we hadn't beaten Washington in forever at the time. And we had played them twice in the previous four years and gotten creamed each time.
You got some of your history mixed up. We played them the previous year in Seattle...dominated the game but lost by 5 because of two fluke special teams plays. But before that, we hadn't played them for 10 years having last played them in the 92 and 93 Rose Bowls. We split those games.
It was quite an ending...especially after we missed 3 field goals earlier in the game.
When I saw the FG was good, I jumped off the couch, fell down on the floor and accidently knocked over my mom's lamp. She wasn't too happy about that.
When I saw that the field goal was good, my entire family erupted. Even the dog went nuts. The neighbors said later that they heard us and figured that Michigan won. Lol.
i have known john navarre for a long time and i wish he would have gotten a better chance in the nfl.
