The time when Black women who could sing made it, now we have the likes of Rihanna and Beyonce with their inferior voices desecrating our ears, they're dancers and not very good ones at that, not true real singers.
According to the liner notes of Hip-O Select's now-sold out 40th anniversary edition of the "Where Did Our Love Go" album, "Freedom" is actually the very first work between the Supremes and HDH, recorded September 13, 1962, but not out on "...Run's" b-side till 2/7/64 or the album until Aug. 31, same year. "Where Did Our Love Go" was Motown's most successful non-greatest hits album from 1964 until Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" in mid-1971.
This was many teen girls serious song. We identified with this. This is what the Supremes were meant to be to me. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Lovely indeed. :D
Thanks Bela194501. I know...I had this album in my possession by 1966. I fell in love with the girls during their first Ed Sullivan appearance in late 1964. I'd have to add the Country and Western album is another gem with the girls sounding so sweet and good. By the time they got super famous their sound was not the same persay because of turning into pop singers.
Aaaahhh...From the album 'Where Did Our Love Go'...This is the album that made the world stand up and take notice of The Supremes...even as kids in elementary school we realized their awesome talent...All the songs on this album were lovely and memorable especially this one...
See, I think a remember one time a heard a song that sounded very much like this, but it kind of had a happier tune, it wasn't A breathtaking guy, it wasn't Your heart belongs to me, I just can't remember the title of the song DX arghh!
NO body can oooooooeww and ahhhh like the Supremes. check out YOu lost the sweetest boy by Mary Wells. when all 3 Supremes ooooooooew together! thats what made me fall in love with their sound. it was said in the early days diane would do her solo then join mary n flo in the background. its possible diane is also in the background on this song as well as the lead. her voice is absolutely devine.
Blkshepherd Is that actually YOU saying something positive about the legendary trio from Detroit? Do I hear you calling Diane by her given name? Didn't you criticize me for that? Did you actually say that you "fell in love with THEIR sound? Oh............I'm going to haver to sit down............I may have a stroke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm dreaming.........this isn't really happening! See, there's hope for everyone.........even the likes of you!
The perfect amount of vocal drama that Ross invests her voice with on this one should have made it no suprise that she'd turn to be a competent actress one day too. Unlike the uptempo, A-side of this record, there's nothing 'teenage' about 'Freedom.' Mary and Florence are feeling it too and perfect in their sympathetic backup of Diana's painful choice here. This genuine 'group feeling' wasn't to last long and every Supremes record that has it is to be treasured.
Dvlaries...you DO have a way with words and I couldn't agree with you more! The first line "You're doing me wrong" has had me sucked into the Supremes' greatness since I was a child listening to my parent's college records! I'm 40 now and my feelings haven't been diminished by all the background drama that has come to light. I do and always will love the Supremes. Bravo!!!!
Albums: (1) Where Did Our Love Go, (2) More Hits By The Supremes, (3) I Hear A Symphony, (4) Supremes Sing Holland-Dozier-Holland, (5) Supremes A Go Go were just Awesome - these 2 young ladies had the world eating out of their hands lead by Ms Ross backed by Ballard & Wilson and spearheaded by Berry & the Motown Geniouses on the heels of Eddie, Brian & Lamont - this was a mega hits winning formula of which we will never see the likes of again.
I LOVE this song. HDH did a great job with this song and Diana sounds so mature, not nasal as she did in the earlier songs. Flo and Mary worked that background. I have to say that when the girls broke out in three part harmony they sounded so good. Flo carried the top and brought them soaring across the notes. Each girl gave her magic which made them Supreme.
I love this song too... it's neat to know that I was not the only one who loved it. I can see/hear myself as a kid singing this song and knowing it was not a hit -- but I loved it anyway! Thanks for posting/sharing!

@flolover31 No its Diana. You can hear Flo's soprano voice on background vocals clearly though.

This song remind you Barbara Lewis's "Hello Stranger" on Atlantic Records(the rat-tat-tat riff)?
