These engines are poorly designed hunks of trash. Zetec is the only way to go...most find them to be bulletproof. My '99 Escort ZX2 has almost 200,000 miles on it and uses NO oil to speak of. The tranny is the weakest link on mine...went thru 2 already.

man those SOHC engines are a nightmare. We have one and had to do a complete motor rebuild after a valve came out and into the cylinder. made a huge mess !!

swap it out and get a zetec. SPI motors suck sorry to say. my sisters SE SPI dropped a valve and we had to rebuild the motor.

@luisn612 This just happened to my 1999 escort too. I hate these cvh engines. They're horrible. Mine was fine and then all of a sudden, it just dropped the valve in the number 4 cylinder. It's so bad, the the engine won't start now. There's metal shavings in it too. I've got 134,000 miles on it.

The split port is worn out at 120,000 miles and $1,200.00 used if you can find one out of a junkyard.

Sounds like your about to drop a valve.

While they are replacing your head gasket get them rebuild the head too because otherwise you will be looking to replace the whole motor when you drop the valve.

@1997FordProbeGT i have to disagree with you. i have a '93 escort with 275,400 kms on a 1.9 SEFI. the only motor trouble i have had with it was a new timing belt at 254 k. check your facts before flap bub.

i agree with @krozzbonez. not a rod knock, my focus sounds similar to this too. could be your valves need adjustment. buy yourself a vacuum gauge for 15 bucks and see what kind of readings you get. there are videos online to show you how to use one, or email me if you have any questions about the process. a rod knock would be coming from underneath the engine and would be a slower, steadier sound.

All focus engines sound like a sewing machine... Just change the oil and it should be fine... Go to a ford dealer start a new focus up and you will her it tapping too... ZX3 owner for 10 1/2 years... pretty much have fixed almost everything under the hood... C-ya...

wow at least your runs i blowed mine up and someone told me it was the head gasket but i think it my be looked up now fords are junk i hate to say but i drove one for a year and the hole time there shit sorry but its the truth

It's simply a matter of not performing the proper maintenance. Oil changes are often skipped because of laziness. Not saying this person is lazy but that's the problem most of the time.

Lack of oil change, redlining, bad shifting, something got into the engine when putting oil in. ect...

i have a 2.0 split port in mine gone over 400k miles runs just like day one. not sure why so many people have had a problem with thiers. i hope everything turns out better.

that sohc motor is shit they go out all the time i should know mine just did. i think ford should help with the cost of fixing it but i dont know how to go about that. i think it just sucks i have a 03 car that i cant give away now.
