@doko73 Monk certainly used marijuana and heroin on occasion. Robin Cook's biography is pretty clear on this, although by the '60s, it was prescription thorazine for his manic depression he took.
i think its hard to comment on the wisdom of the producer without more context/history. i am sure it was a complex relationship---and Monk is pretty drugged out..maybe the producer knew which buttons to push--and its a bit of a show that he endures.
@atombomb31458 PLEASE don't say my mans was on drugs. If he was it was prescribed by a doctor for his mental illness. I've heard he didn't use. His buddy Bud Powell did and got him pinched....
@doko73 I was mainly talking about prescription drugs. And I am not saying he could help it.-I was just saying that the interaction w the producer may have been more complex than what people may see in 5 seconds on a vid.
I'm not so sure. He sure has lazy tongue, and the Eastwood documentary shows his focus was ever odd or marginal, and that he ended drifting into a clinical haze where few could reach him.
Not to deny he was familiar with what ailed this whole, brilliant, black musical community from a golden jazz age, heavy drugs. But it's a sweeping oversimplification and quite misleading to encapsulate his mental scene as just 'pretty drugged out.'
what a classic clip as it gives so much insight behind the scenes working with eccentric artist and here I'm sure he was on some type of drug but could still create. the name of the tune "Ugly Beauty",could only have been thought by Thelonious.
Let the tape roll!

@bbailey17b 'pretty drugged out ' were three words i used in the larger context of my post.It seems that you are making the over simplification.

With a producer like that it's a wonder that Monk ever made records.

Probably my favorite from Thelonious Monk. Seriously dumb to stop a masterpiece mid-take...
