I found this clip as I was looking to see if there was any Cecil Taylor Trio w/ Lyons & Cyrille. Amazing to hear Lyons spinning those lines & Murphy feeding off of that & sending cues back. Amazing stuff. For the naysayers, please don't waste your time on those of us who enjoy this music. If you don't hear it, don't bother--just move on. The rest of us, we know the Ear of the Behearer.
@TeenCretin Um, Jimmy Lyons is hardly a 'douch bag'. And Ornette Coleman was not around 100 years before him. Do you know anything about the history of Jazz between 1960 and today? Lyons started working with Cecil Taylor in 1961, along with the impeccable Sunny Murry. They were all extremely well respected peers of O. Colman, A. Ayler, J. Coltrane. E. Dolphy., etc. They played in the same clubs, in the same scene. Do your homework, listen to the music & learn.
Oh man, that's some SMOKING shit that. I love that Lyons' BYG-album, Other Afternoons, I think it's probably the best one of all the BYG's Actuel-series. Thanks for this video, mate!
(cont.) Btw, rihardsbrigis, where on the YT can we enjoy your very rare jazz music videos with the clean sound of the 21st? You cant mean that the Dronten things are your only contributions? Almost impossible to hear anything and a very poor camera action! Completely useless. Sorry, I cant give you any respect until I have seen your rare free jazz video.
But, it is not easy for an old bugger from the 20th to understand for instance how to transfer a NTSC VHS to a readable WM- file in order to upload to YT. Our childish intention was, to give the young generation of the 21st a chance to listen to the man Jimmy Lyons in a quite rare document. I know that it is possible to listen to the fantastic artists William and Paul on many other places on YT. (cont.)
You can barely hear Murphy working on that snare, during most of the performance the bass is almost missing, apart from solo.
Im not questioning the fact that this is enjoyable, after all I believe this is the only recording over here. But explaining the virtue of this to younger folk would be more effortless if it would be a bit cleaner, than a cam rip from a VHS. We live in the 21st century after all :)
Amazing! Recordings such as this display the incredible level of musicianship of Avant Garde innovators like Lyons and Murphy. These musicians obtained and demonstrate an extremely high understanding of music, art, expression, and originality. Paul Murphy is still exploring music and art in this manner, yet on a new level, with pianist Larry Willis. Those who have not yet done so should definitely check out the recordings "Excursions" and "Expose."
Is this a music based on interplay and reaction solely? Is there any kind of 'rehearsal' for this, or sheet music or key. Is it just free blowing? does someone have to be 'trained' in traditional diatonic scales, etc. to be able to do this? Or just an amateur just 'blow'? When are you 'good enough' to blow like this? Or is it just true and free expression?
at any stage free improvisation can be helpfull. Jimmy lions is obviously a highly skilled musician who has thoroughly assimilated the jazz tradition. Compared to free music today it is easier to hear the traces of charlie parker in players like lyons
AWESOME...LOVE IT. Thanks for posting his. Pure magic

Thanks for poting this. Lyons had a great band in the 80s. Wee Sneezawee is probably one of my top ten or so jazz records of that decade.

PaulMurphyJazzDrum can answer how rehearsed it really was. I can just say that there are very few who are good enough and can blow like this today.

It is excellent counter point to so much convention
