  • Thank's.... It help me a lot

  • Thumbs up + thanks!

  • Do you need the media dirrect software installed to use KeyTweak ??? Cuz I have win 7 and I think the only compatible one is WMD 4.0+ and I dont have it. Cant find it anywhere

  • No. Keytweak is completely separate from MediaDirect.

It allows you to remap any key on your keyboard to do various functions - for example, you could remap the "h key" to launch iTunes by remapping it to be your media key instead of the letter "h". The purpose of my tutorial is to demonstrate how you can use the MediaDirect that comes with certain dell laptops (and I find to be useless) to launch iTunes, winamp, or whatever media player you use.

  • If you're a bit more adventurous or would rather do something else, there are tutorials out there to demonstrate how to remap keys to launch thunderbird/outlook, microsoft word, internet, any program you can name, etc.

My tutorial was specifically directed at people who bought a Dell laptop, never used MediaDirect, and would've rather had the key launch iTunes (since this is what happened to me, thought it would be nice if people shared information about how to do things to make life easier).

  • I've included how to do that in the description.

  • Oh well thats neat!!

I will try that out tonight then!

  • I just copied the C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe to C:\Program Files\Dell\MediaDirect and renamed to MDirect.exe, it works great.. but launches in the backgroud.. have to press alt+tab to make it foreground

  • that works too, was just sharing an easy way I found that seemed to work.

  • hey man, use my program insted..., i will upload a video on it soon

  • what program?

  • look soon

  • what do i do after 1:48?

  • If you've remapped the "Media Select" key input in KeyTweak to the Dell Media Direct Button on your computer , then all thats left is to assign your default media program.

  • ya i got it thanks

  • i bought a dell xps m1210 laptop and when i push the mediadirect button it says an erro

  • Would be a bit more helpful if you could tell me what you mean by that exactly. Did you try to remap the key to launch itunes, or have you not done anything and it is giving you an error?

  • I Remapt it it does work but when i shut down the computer and press the button it says md extended partition table erro it said that even before i changed the key to itunes

  • yeah, if it's doing this when you try launching mediadirect without starting your os, then I would recommend reinstalling using the discs dell sends you / going to their support website and getting the downloads to update drivers/bios etc.

  • Ok, I got the Media Direct Key to open Thunderbird, but it opens MediaDirect as well lol. Do I stop Mediadirect from launching by using keytweak to move it to a key that's not on the keyboard?

  • Yeah, by remapping the key to something else (with KeyTweak) before assigning the program launch macro, media direct shouldn't launch anymore.

If that doesn't work, you could always just uninstall media direct leaving those keys open for whatever you want to assign.

(Since this is a dell, I'd assume they sent you the installation CD's with your laptop, so you could reinstall media direct at a later time if you wanted).

  • The thing is, I think it might come in handy eventually so I want to keep it around just in case. But nvm, I found a solution. I'll PM it and u can share it if you like.

  • Oh. I really don't want to lose my media control keys but I'll try using autohotkey at first. Thanks!

  • What if I wanted to map the button to any program like say...Thunderbird for e-mails?

  • Unfortunately, you cant assign macros with Keytweak. Instead, I would recommend you use the program AutoHotkey. It allows you to assign macros to keys on your keyboard, such as launching applications (like Thunderbird, etc).

  • If that doesn't work, you could remap the MediaDirect using Keytweak to a key thats not on your keyboard (like something that would be on a numpad since this is on a laptop), then assign a macro to the numkey using AutoHotkey. A little more work, but it can be done. Plus, it's a free program too. By doing this though, I'm not sure what will happen to your play/stop/skip keys.
