Odd how the Freeze Ray (wasn't it called the "Freezethrower" in Duke Nukem 3D?) looks pretty faithful to the previous game unlike the rest of the weapons, yet has apparently been reimagined as a mere futuristic tool.

@jovantheun1337 You know what's cool? There's an option in the 'Extra Game Setiings' menu that you can unlock that transforms it back into the Freezethrower. It still looks the same, it just fires round balls of ice with much more range, but it doesn't recharge.

Now that I think about it, it might have been intended as a futuristic tool in DN3D as well, given the locations you find it and the bright yellow paint, red warning light, etc.

@blibble321 Near future according to most sources. They took a realistic, modern design approach as opposed to all the heavily futuristic/alien looking levels in Duke Nukem I and II so that it would be more familiar and thus more immersive, also distancing itself from other FPS games of the era. The girly calendar in DN3D looks like it says December 2001 or 2007. As far as I know, 3D Realms has never commented on it beyond saying the game takes place "sometime in the early 21st century".
