  • The cartridge case is pretty short. Up close and personal it is a .41 cal, but I've heard they only travel about 550 fps. It's still a chunk of lead.

  • are theese weak? it seems like they are

  • Would like to have seen the recoil behind this famous piece. I've often wondered what it would feel like to fire such a small pistol in .41 caliber, rimfire or no:) --

  • @stevevandien

You can see the recoil in my other video "Baby Browning" in which I shoot two guns, the Baby Browning, and two shots with this antique Remington derringer. I saw somewhere that the velocity of these rounds is about 550 fps, but they're almost as big as a .45, so I imagine you still wouldn't want to be on the receiving end.

  • I wonder if you could convert it to .22 rimfire.

  • @saj12100

You cannot. The firing pin moves very little up and down, to catch the edge of the .41 cal casings. The barrel is .41 cal... almost twice the size of the .22. What would be the point?

  • @saj12100 you can buy derringers that are .22 mag i got one

  • Could you do close up of the 41 rimfire next to a 22 rimfire?

  • @ammosmith

Thank you... that's a good idea. I've been focusing on music, lately, sorta set the guns aside. But I will plan to do that, as a complement to the above video, and people seem to need the education.

  • @quickdrw1 I LOVE old guns. AR15s are cool and all but nothing like my 500 double rifle from 1875. They have character. I had someone say.."What's that thing gonna do?" It'll kill just as good today as it did the day it was made ;-)

  • 3 people dislike this i need 3 bullets

  • @xXxGnuVirusxXx Your gonna need one more bullet. Great video interesting round :-)

  • i dont get why they make .357 magnum derringers. The short barrel will cute the velocity in half or more just giving you a huge ball of fire. I guess its mostly for show

  • hehe, Bill, yur a legend xD

  • derringers are a last resort weapon.. im talking point blank range or across the poker table.. these guns were desinged for whores and gamblers.

  • OMG that's the coolest mustashe ever!

  • the .22 blanks are offset so the firing pin

    wil hit them

  • That's interesting... first I heard about this. I was wondering about the offset, you'd need to be able to see it with your eyes, so you could load the cartridges where the pin would hit the .22 blank. The back of the .41 rimfire copper gives no indication where an offset would be.

  • the hole for the blank is offset to one side

so you can put it were the pin hits

  • If you are a handloader your can get components to load these. There is a case that uses a .22 short rf blank and a regular load of BP under a lead cast bullet. Might be something to look into.

  • id sell it since they dont make ammo for it anymore. take it to an auction

  • lol cowboy

  • I just inherited on of these guns and I would like to know if there are any alternatives to finding very rare .41 ammo to fire it.

  • You see in an earlier post, Navy Arms apparently had a production run a few years ago, but I was not able to find any. I was able to find a box manufactured by Western over 75 years ago. In my search I found a few people selling them by the round, approx $4 each.

  • go to gunbroker..com...you can buy 'brand new' boxes of 41 rimfire for approx $90/50rounds (when i say brand new they look brand new and fresh out of the box but still probably 1935)

  • Fine little gun, got one today with a box of 41 ammo.

  • @255engin

Where did you find your box of .41 ammo?

  • As would be expected, it came along with the inheritence. "Sorry for any new hopes or speculations that there might be an easier place to find this ammo" - My new derringer's serial # is L97084 (a type 3)

What's most interesting about another derringer serial # L97255 it auctioned for 92K last year. Of course, it's infamous owner (John Dillinger) had alot to do with it..........lol

  • really cool gun! .41cal Rimfire, I've never heard of that round, and no wonder, not made since 1935! If you wanted to have some fun shooting with that gun, you could always sleeve the .41cal barrel with a .22cal rifled rimfire barrel liner/blank. The value of the gun should remain untouched as you should be able to remove the .22cal barrel liner without too much trouble and return the gun to its origonal state in .41cal.

  • @Nwest82

One problem... the rimfire firing pin is not in the center of each chamber and I don't think it would catch the edge of a .22 in the center , because it just catches the edge of the .41

  • Ah, I didn't think of that, you be striking the rim of the breech end of the barrel and not the round.

  • @Nwest82

  • Gee. What's with all these experts (and quoters of experts) running down derringers. For what they were made to do, and the time they were developed they worked. Sure, you can't compare a Remington derringer with a subcompact 45 or 9mm, but that's comparing apples to oranges - like comparing a Model A to a Mustang. Of course I go back to the simple question for all those who poo-poo the derringer - Do you want to be shot by one or if a guy has one are you going to disregard it. I think not.

  • Navy Arms was making .41 RF and .32 RF around 2000 so you might be able to find some of that.

  • barflewk the derringer is THE concealable weapon, small, loose, simple, NEVER jams so up urs

  • u look lik the singer from motorhead

  • he does

  • Though they're criticized, I love derringers. They're small, easy to carry, and a blast to shoot. I have a newer Cobray 45/.410 and it stays with me most of the day and I have a really old( I don't know how old) derringer that was made by Colt. I keep that loaded and beside my bed just in case. Thats a nice gun man.

  • nice gun, thxs for posting.

  • my pappaws dad used one of those to kill bears he snuck up on them when they were sleeping and put it in their ear lol

  • I dont care how impractical one is, there gorgous guns and I would love to own one.

  • Opinions vary.

  • Not among pros. People who know their stuff are critical of the concept behind derringers and their faults . Without exception.

  • I don't care what your unspecified pros think. When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

  • Jeff Cooper, Massad Ayoob, Evan Marshall to name a few. ANY other type of small concealable firearm would be preferable to a two shot single action derringer that you're going to fumble with. Any.

  • The gun I'm shooting in this video is an antique collector's item. So is the ammunition. I was curious how it would perform. Why are you hammering on this?

  • Because I'm afraid some n00B will see it, think it's cool and buy a modern variation on one, and actually think they have something.

  • Nice. I'd love to have one.

  • was at a gunshow yesterday and a guy had a .41 for sale he said there is a company in canada that makes the ammo wish i could remember who he said makes it.

  • Thanks for the information. I'll keep an eye out for it. Sure would be nice to shoot at less than $3 a pop.

  • That gun is certainly accurate enough for what it's designed for. I wonder what the ballistics are.

  • I should have shown a couple of the cartridges in the video. Many people have never seen the .41 short rimfire. It is a short cartridge, just under 1 inch long, and the copper (not brass) casing is only 1/2" long. Being rimfire, it is not reloadable. It would make a good sized hole, but not alot of punch. Thanks for your comment.

  • the entire point of the derringer is its compact size to damage ratio. it was deemed a "stomach gun" one used for bikers/gamblers who get in a tight spot using it for a lethal shot a point blank. these are sick!!!! if you like these you ought to check out the Taurus Judge. its esentially a derringer but in revolver form. those are just as cool if not cooler!

  • I'm thinking.... why would I want a Taurus when I already have a Remington? This one was manufactured 130 years ago (in America) and besides being very well made, it is one cool collector item. I just made a leather holster for it.

  • no i mean as an addition! not as a replacement! the Derringer is totally badass I'd never sell one if i had it!

  • look at some of the cowboyaction ammo manufactors they might mak some

  • Does anyone Know if you can get modern

    ammo for these? Steve.

  • What I learned when searching for .41 short rimfire ammunition was that manufacturers quit making it in 1935. I heard that one company made a short run of it in the 1980's, but now all of it is collector items just like the guns.

  • I traded away a modern mfr Cobra .38 special to get this gun. You may not be aware that a .41 short rimfire is not as powerful as a

.38. Recoil was not too severe. The ammo itself is 75 years old! They don't make it anymore.

This Remington is very well made, dates to around 1880 manufacture.

    Thanks for your comment.

  • @quickdrw1 ..That's an awesome Derringer !!! I have a Hopkins #6 .41 calibre....five shot ELEPHANt Ivory grips made in 1880.......and still Deadly

  • It's impressive that you hit the paper at 15' let alone get it in the black! I have a derringer in .38 special and I can't hit the target that good at 9' LOL Good job! Does yours smack your hand hard? I only put about 20 rounds through mine before I get tired of it smacking my palm but I always shoot it whenever I go to the range. It's really just a toy :)
