One online source said the dancing was done by "the team of Myles and Kover." Compson's voice was likely dubbed. A reference said she wasn't a singer, (she played the violin well).
When this dance routine was pitched to the studios, it must have had the same response as when they pitched Hogans Heros years later. VERY weird! I do see stuff that Sigmund Frieud would have a field day with.
I first saw this scene from the film The Great Gabbo on Classic Arts Showcase on KCET channel 28. This is the epitome of 1920's song and dance spectacle. I loved it. What a wonderful time the 20's seems to have been. It was before my time (I was born in 1980) but it looks like a marvelous dream of a time!
What a remarkable sequence! It epitomised its period, as the twenties ended with a bang (the 1929 Crash) and the thirties effectively began prematurely. It combined the old feather and sequins style of the Ziegfeld Follies with the new modernism of helmets and metallic themes. The two principals were athletic and graceful dancers, and physically perfect for the roles. It is too much to expect that he also did his own singing, in that fine, muscular tenor voice.
I've seen a lot of strange things in my life but I think this takes the cake! The costumes, the staging- everything- just cracks me up! Thanks so much for posting it!
This has a high degree of sexual charge to it, in my view. I love this dreamy sequence. It's so weird, and to look back at it now is like looking at some strange parallel universe.
Singers are Donald Douglas and Betty Compson : should be given credits

She is sexy! Doubt that one cutie really did that singing and the dancing with the dangerous drops? There are a lot of odd cuts in the number.
Anyone know how this number was done?
