@samomania21 just think about it as you would normally do on a browser.

readyState values
1 - when you are writing a URL in the address bar (you haven't sent the request)
2 - when you press enter in the address bar (you have sent the request)
3 - when the page starts loading (you are recieving the content)
4 - when you see the page with all its content (you have totally received the content)

That is "consolas", you may want to look at these programming fonts too.

Thanks to tsotsoko. for clearing this up..
the methods should be arranged like this..
open()
onreadystatechange
send()
I happened to use onreadystatechange before open(). but tht gave error in IE. so the arrangement suggested by tsotsoko is better than mine so use it if you want to work with ajax in IE also..
