"meant to be" is always going to be subjective unless you are the person who wrote it. I grant myself artistic license to play it however I want to, and to create the music I feel like playing.
There is a skill in recreating something accurate to the time it was written, no doubt... but it's not required.
I think you played this wonderfully, the lower melody was clear and exciting. Thanks for helping me understand some things about this piece which I had missed before.
I liked it alot, very clear voices and all! You do also have some nice dynamic touches in there, for example the crescendo from 0:52 to 0:57. The only improvement would maybe be to make it a little less march-like?
Wow, good job!! could hear the each entry of the subjects clearly!! btw, it would be better if u play more legato in general, work on more finger legato to this piece, its sound tend to be quite dry and harsh. however, it's a pretty good!!
But, Bach didn't not write in the time of legato playing... That's a more 18th century idea. When it's nice and articulated, you can get that... "umph" I believe he demonstrated this well.
haha...legato playing is essential in every period, not only at 18th century. Bach wasnt dont write in the legato playing, just that the instrument they used last time was harpsichord, how could you produce a legato sound from the pluck-stringed instrument? haha..btw, am agree with you it will be nice if you articulated it well.
It was pretty good! Congratulations. I find though that the playing the same length stacatto in both hands to create a break in the piece makes it hard to hear the separated voices. For instance at 10 seconds after.
Try to make some of the notes in one voice longer - closer to legato, and see how it sounds.
Sounded great!

Just wondering, is this piece meant to be played slightly staccato-ish to imitate the harpsichord?

This was really nice... although I though the last 4 measures were played as if from the Romantic period.
