can there be a more poignant, sublime, heart rending piece of music than this. not a note, cadence, resolution or modulation by puccini is misplaced. this is pathos and supreme fulfillment achieving perfect union - the human condition is transformed to the divine. Thank God for blessing us mortals with genius of this stature. i have tears flowing as i write this. music, art, LOVE for eternity!!!
I have always found it hard to enjoy Renata Scotto's vocal timbre, but this recording goes to show just what a phenomenal artist she was in the right role. A great Butterfly!
Do you know what's also kind of cool. At 2:17 when the friends sing the ascending notes "Mira quanto cielo, quanti fiori, quanto mar!" you really hear the flute and harp doubling the women's voices.
i've been checking out other versions of this aria and this is by far the best i have encountered. Her tone is marvelous and i love her legato. OMG she starts the C#/Db beautifully and holds it. OUTSTANDING!
There's a 50% chance the score is written in the key of Gb or the key of F#. Both have the exact same number of accidentals so Puccini could have selected either one. Without seeing the score I don't know if she's singing C# or D#. Her pitch is right on though.
@Drelnis Yes it's a C#, but it does vibrate a bit to the high side.Often singers go a tad sharp when they're nervous,as they always are here:you start from off-stage where you can't hear much and can only hope you're together w.the pit (even if there's a stage-conductor),the women's chorus beforehand is almost always a mess, then when you do get on-stage you still can't hear the orchestra, plus it's the first thing you sing. Also, it's just plain hard, even on a recording like this.
@kgarmaker123 i have Moffo's on my ipod..havent heard heard Freni's though but i can see that being a good version because her voice has so much cut to it...does freni do the Dflat towards the end?
Yes, she does and she does it ppp... and its fabulous... and Moffo's 1956 studio recording of Butterfly to me, is the best version of them all. she is so believable.. and so good vocally. I love Freni in the role too.. Scotto is dramatically fabulous.. her voice, is a bit acidic for the role.. but she can do the ending, and that counts for a lot.
I believe Freni's Butterfly Db to be most beautiful in the world, the clarity, the beauty, the spontaneity, absolutely beautiful. Although I heard they did quite a lot of computer-editing on the note, I don't mind, compared to modern pop music it couldn't have been much computer work lol.

Quasi si potrebbe credere che non sia possibile, per quanto è brava nell'interpretazione e nel canto. Una butterfly stellare.

The high C#/Db made my jaw drop.
I actually met her after an concert in Albuquerque in 1981. I told her what a big fan I was and she said "Grazie". What a woman of class!
tkellnerus 2 years ago
Yes it is very nicely sung, but don't you agree it should actually be a C# but it's out of pitch?
Lucky you to have met Scotto!
Drelnis 2 years ago
it sounds like a C# to me. What does it sound like to you?
musoph21 2 years ago
An exact D on my piano. Try it on your piano, I'll check the score and see if it's supposed to be a C# or a D.
For all I know Scotto sang it as a D :)
Drelnis 2 years ago
u think maybe the key is a little higher. Because the note doesnt sound out of place at all.
