I second the request for para!! actually I get it, they're kind of smilar, but what I'm actually interested is in a comparative vid...yup, there's so many around 3 inch blades...I mean..which one??? earlier it peop, but now all these blades seem to be equivalents, so question remains, how do they compare?? which ones to go for??
Just got this today from a local pawn shop (I love living in Colorado), it was quite a find and after the art of the haggle was done, I walked out with a Spyderco Military (She cleaned up really well)
Of course the first place I head is to is TNP
The one I just bought looks different from what you have here, stamped on the blade
Spyderco
MILITARY
CPM 440V Golden, Colorado, USA
has bigger jimpang (only on the top of the thumb ramp)
@HvinnyTheViking Congrats to you, man! That's a killer score. I've been looking for one in 440V for ages, because they haven't made them in 440V for like ten years. Many I ask how much you paid for it?
I knew with a tag-price of $75, even in her dilapidated state (gummed up blade around the swivel, G-10 was all filled in with discolored gunk and blade barely opened). I had found a sweet deal, but I will never pay a ticket price in a pawnshop, ended up paying $40 cash
I had no idea it was as old and rare as it is, or I would have just handed him the cash, I knew it was leaving with me, also found a leatherman Charge Ti (s30v) for $40 that day and Skeletool @$20
hey, i had a Kershaw skyline, absolutely loved it, but lost it recently on a camping trip. I've been looking at some spydercos, but haven't found one that i love, but i really like the look of the knife style that they have established. what is a recommendation on a spyderco that will live up to the skyline that doesnt brake bank, but is super tough and will stay sharp. thanks
@sceneginger013 try the persistance or the tenacious. both of them are under $35. the persistance is a little under 3" and the tenacious is around 3 3/8"
@longboarders1 The Military has a longer blade, doesn't have the option to change the clip position, is a frame or liner lock. The Paramilitary has a compression lock, 4-way position clip mounting options, and is a quite a bit smaller. They are both available in different steels as sprint runs, but comes standard with S30V.
nutnfancy i have to be honest with you sir i HATE spyderco knives BUT i love this knife i went to a local gun store and put one in hand and i was just so impressed with the ergonomics the size and the stability of this knife so IMO i give this knife a 9.0 out of 10
Hey Nutnfancy, what's your opinion on the new spyderco military titanium with the framelock? that looks like a knife I would be extremely eager to get my hands on because it looks like it's built like a tank
@Kylef7735 True enough, I haven't handled one but it doesn't look like the anodized titanium provides much traction, the Benchmade 940 seems to have a much better surfacing to it
@ghostie234 The anodizing they have on those handles is kinda textured, but i really consider that one more of an EDC knife, with its 3.5 or so inch blade.
@ghostie234 If you want the military, but with a smaller blade, check out the para military 2, that is a brilliant knife, the lock is better, and the pocket clip positioning is better.
@Kylef7735 I dunno the only thing that concerns me is the locking mechanism, I tend to be a bit weary of innovative i.e. different locks. I tend towards lock backs or axis locks because I trust the strength, never had a knife I loved more than the Recon 1 because I knew if I had to I could stand on the darn thing without it folding on me (Not that I would, just saying its feasible)
@ghostie234 Dont worry about it, trust me, the compression lock is as good as a liner lock or better, when you look up close at one youll realize its like a liner lock, but it also has a stop pin, and better blade retention so you can carry it tip up, and a bunch of other features that really make it awesome.
I read on the Spyderco forum that a Military 2 is in the works with some of the ergo upgrades like the Para Military 2 has, and possibly a different locking system...
@metaZen Yeah, the Military 2 has been in the works for several years and no one, except spyderco, knows which stage of development it's in. So, yes, it's in the works, but it could be several years before it reaches the market.
@liltugb0at no man dont worry ive been in the world of knives for years now... its just they normally range from $130-$160. thats what im sayin. its a steel for 109

@darknuke96 you can easily get it for about 120euro second hand- unused. i recently bought one from a guy in germany for 120 euro. second hand. not used.new in box.

Just so you know, if you DO take this guy apart to clean it, keep track of how it came apart, it has a series of washers in it that are easy to lose track of.
did anyone notice it says made in golden colorado usa, earth? nice to know i mean foreign blades can be bad but its nice to know its made on this planet lol
I have been EDC and utility carrying this blad for the last 6 years and I love it. The pocket clip sucks but you can remove it and bend it back when needed. Good Knife.
Love watching your vids, learning a lot. I'm using a Spyderco Stretch as my EDC, which I got based on your 10 out of 10 review. I'm now looking at the 2010 version of the Military with the camo G-10 handle and black coated blade. I'm just finishing my college degree in Police Foundations here in Canada and there is a strong chance I'm joining the military. Would you recomend the Police Spyderco or the Military, as an on the job carry ? Or stay with the Stretch? Thanks for any imput

@new9876 Sucks man, I'm 18 and live in Canada and my parents don't like guns (they don't hate them but they don't like em either) and they let me own them and I live at home, even restricted guns (in canada that's handguns and tactical carbines type stuff). It comes down to this, parents need to trust you and they need to be logical ;) .
@chairmcnasty I think ur right on the trust thing. My comment was 2 weeks ago... i actually bought myself a nice victorinox soldier 2010 in the mean time. i really like it, i use it as my edc and my mom doesnt mind anymore
I've been watching you for over two years, Nutn, and I keep waiting for you to make the connection between steel liners and 4-way postionable clips, but you just never seem to get there. I've never seen a maker attempt to drill and tap G-10 or Zytel to accept clip screws. Now I'm a lefty, and I appreciate versatility in clip position. There is one blade that satisfies both of us, the new Recon 1, which makes clever use of a drilled and tapped aluminum back spacer for clip attachement. Hmmm.
Awesome videos, you are helping me decide on my list of knives to get. Any order you would suggest??I am going to start out with my first spyderco with the tenacious. Thanks again!!
Have you reviewed any of the bird line of spyderco? I have the harpie and it is only for defense. The biggest down size to it is the metal body is slick when wet.
My only hangups with buying on of these are that they're tip down and liner locks. It has a great rep but I'm not a fan of tip down carry knives. Maybe I'll add one later.
@iamnotme1234 I bought one two years ago and had the same concerns about the tip. The blade is MUCH stronger than you think, and that tip isn't as weak as it looks. The military has a beefy blade; it's wider/thicker than any of my other folders at the base. It tapers down to the tiny tip, as you can see. It's not as tiny as you think it is, though. If you grab a mainstream folder and lay it next to the tip on the military, you'll see that that the military's tip has the same thickness.
I am left handed and do not approve of spydercos use of right side only clips on many of the knives they make. It is highly annoying to fall in love with a blade only to find out its carry option is not changeable. It is tolerable but it takes away from the blade (at least to me)
@XGeneralBeanX The military is ambidextrous - comes with a moveable pocket clip, but only for left/right handed tip down, no tip up option. It doesn't look like the one shown here has the holes for a left handed pocket clip, but the new ones certainly do. Check out X4CTO on his military.
@micromuffin2000 That is not the point. I know they make left handed versions of some of the knives. I just don't see why they can't put 2 or 3 holes on the other side of these blades. It is harder to find left handed blades, you generally can't find as good of a deal on a left handed blade, plus they aren't great for trades. I just don't see why on a 100+ dollar knife they can't give you an option on what sides you want the clip on.
@XGeneralBeanX It's a righty liner lock so throwing ambidextrous clip screws would be fruitless since you would still have to manipulate the liner lock with your right hand. You can get as good of a deal on a lefty military as you can on a righty.
@xDEMONIZEDx Manipulating a "right handed" liner is just as easy to do with your left hand. It is a simple and trivial detail that I highly doubt any left (or right handed) people even think about when buying a knife. And the reason I say "right handed" liner is because some companies default their liners in the opposite direction. The main one that comes to mind is the victorinox but I assure you there are more. And you can find as good a deal but it is often harder to find and less available.
@XGeneralBeanX Last I checked, your argument was that you couldn't find a lefty for as good of a deal as a righty. You said nothing about availability. This knife is not beyond modification, you could easily modify the knife for a lefty clip and there may be people on BF that do it for a small fee.
@xDEMONIZEDx False. My argument was that with a quality knife such as the military should come standard with left and right handed carry options. Then I listed some drawbacks to having dedicated left and right handed models. I never said you couldn't get the knife in either model at a good price. I was just hinting at the fact that not all dealers carry left handed models so options and prices are fairly limited. Sorry that I couldn't be abundantly clear but 500 words is not a lot to work with.
@XGeneralBeanX It is just not within the design to be ambidextrous. There is no steel liner on the other side to hold the screws. Adding one would only make the knife more expensive and heavier.
@XGeneralBeanX ive talked to a spyderco rep about this issue, and spyderco has a good reason for the one position clip. for strength, spyderco will only drill and tap holes for a clip into a steel liner. because the military does not have full steal liners, the clip can only be on the one corner.

@OverYunder Just because something works for you does not mean it works for anyone else (why we have different religions!) I can carry and draw my knives with my right hand or with the clip on the right side in my left pocket but just because I can doesn't mean I want to. Like most other people in the world I like to do things in the most efficient way possible and with knives it is a left side carry clip. Efficiency is the name of the game. Its how society operates and knives are no different.
Great Vid as usual. I really appreciate your efforts. I do have a question though. What is the advantage of a flat ground blade/edge as opposed to hollowground or other type of edge. Maybe you could do a vid on that for us knife novices.
I have one of the original Spyderco Military models that I purchased in 1997. The blade is CPM440V. I have carried this blade on three continents and in two combat zones and only this year sent it to Spyderco to have it reworked. Love this knife and carry it everyday.
hey nuttin, just so you know, there is a pretty big difference between, the S30V, and the CPM S30V, just so your aware, i never here you differentiate
I just got a Knife works Carbon fiber version on the Military and I LOVE it! thanks for the review.

Some view them as inferior to traditional lock back (Spyderco Endura), AXIS lock (Benchmade), etc.
classof77 11 months ago 9
@classof77 No, i would not, and i dont think nutnfancy would either, being he has reviewed many tactical folders with liner locks.

Just so you know, if you DO take this guy apart to clean it, keep track of how it came apart, it has a series of washers in it that are easy to lose track of.

It comes down to this, parents need to trust you and they need to be logical ;) .
chairmcnasty 1 year ago
@chairmcnasty I think ur right on the trust thing. My comment was 2 weeks ago... i actually bought myself a nice victorinox soldier 2010 in the mean time. i really like it, i use it as my edc and my mom doesnt mind anymore
new9876 1 year ago
I've been watching you for over two years, Nutn, and I keep waiting for you to make the connection between steel liners and 4-way postionable clips, but you just never seem to get there. I've never seen a maker attempt to drill and tap G-10 or Zytel to accept clip screws. Now I'm a lefty, and I appreciate versatility in clip position. There is one blade that satisfies both of us, the new Recon 1, which makes clever use of a drilled and tapped aluminum back spacer for clip attachement. Hmmm.

My only hangups with buying on of these are that they're tip down and liner locks. It has a great rep but I'm not a fan of tip down carry knives. Maybe I'll add one later.

What happens if you stab your attacker with that knife and the tip of the knife hits bone. Will the tip break?
iamnotme1234 1 year ago
@iamnotme1234
Probably, but does it matter?
If you hit bone, you've probably killed your attacker and have survived the day.
zanuha 1 year ago
@iamnotme1234 lol if you really cut someone with a knife you wont care if its broken or not cause you will have problems with your own first
Coffeenescafe 1 year ago
@iamnotme1234 I'm pretty sure steel is stronger than bone. However, there are tons of external factors, like the angle you are stabbing on, ect.
TheUSMC2017 1 year ago
@iamnotme1234 I bought one two years ago and had the same concerns about the tip. The blade is MUCH stronger than you think, and that tip isn't as weak as it looks. The military has a beefy blade; it's wider/thicker than any of my other folders at the base. It tapers down to the tiny tip, as you can see. It's not as tiny as you think it is, though. If you grab a mainstream folder and lay it next to the tip on the military, you'll see that that the military's tip has the same thickness.
OverYunder 1 year ago
@mxrida97 240 is just the MSRP, if you buy this itl really be more like 130, a reasonable price for this knife
micromuffin2000 1 year ago
I am left handed and do not approve of spydercos use of right side only clips on many of the knives they make. It is highly annoying to fall in love with a blade only to find out its carry option is not changeable. It is tolerable but it takes away from the blade (at least to me)
XGeneralBeanX 1 year ago
@XGeneralBeanX ummm they make a left hand version of this knife. All production knife companies give us southpaws the shaft.
jlastre 1 year ago
@XGeneralBeanX The military is ambidextrous - comes with a moveable pocket clip, but only for left/right handed tip down, no tip up option. It doesn't look like the one shown here has the holes for a left handed pocket clip, but the new ones certainly do. Check out X4CTO on his military.
TheEnglishRedneck45 1 year ago
@XGeneralBeanX Just buy the left handed version
micromuffin2000 1 year ago
@micromuffin2000 That is not the point. I know they make left handed versions of some of the knives. I just don't see why they can't put 2 or 3 holes on the other side of these blades. It is harder to find left handed blades, you generally can't find as good of a deal on a left handed blade, plus they aren't great for trades. I just don't see why on a 100+ dollar knife they can't give you an option on what sides you want the clip on.
XGeneralBeanX 1 year ago 30
@XGeneralBeanX I agree, I hope they fix that on the military 2
micromuffin2000 1 year ago
@XGeneralBeanX It's a righty liner lock so throwing ambidextrous clip screws would be fruitless since you would still have to manipulate the liner lock with your right hand. You can get as good of a deal on a lefty military as you can on a righty.
xDEMONIZEDx 1 year ago
@xDEMONIZEDx Manipulating a "right handed" liner is just as easy to do with your left hand. It is a simple and trivial detail that I highly doubt any left (or right handed) people even think about when buying a knife. And the reason I say "right handed" liner is because some companies default their liners in the opposite direction. The main one that comes to mind is the victorinox but I assure you there are more. And you can find as good a deal but it is often harder to find and less available.
XGeneralBeanX 1 year ago
@XGeneralBeanX Last I checked, your argument was that you couldn't find a lefty for as good of a deal as a righty. You said nothing about availability. This knife is not beyond modification, you could easily modify the knife for a lefty clip and there may be people on BF that do it for a small fee.
xDEMONIZEDx 1 year ago
@xDEMONIZEDx False. My argument was that with a quality knife such as the military should come standard with left and right handed carry options. Then I listed some drawbacks to having dedicated left and right handed models. I never said you couldn't get the knife in either model at a good price. I was just hinting at the fact that not all dealers carry left handed models so options and prices are fairly limited. Sorry that I couldn't be abundantly clear but 500 words is not a lot to work with.
XGeneralBeanX 1 year ago
@XGeneralBeanX It is just not within the design to be ambidextrous. There is no steel liner on the other side to hold the screws. Adding one would only make the knife more expensive and heavier.
kaizoebara 10 months ago
@XGeneralBeanX ive talked to a spyderco rep about this issue, and spyderco has a good reason for the one position clip. for strength, spyderco will only drill and tap holes for a clip into a steel liner. because the military does not have full steal liners, the clip can only be on the one corner.

@XGeneralBeanX Custimize it yourself. It's SO EASY. Whether you should have to or not doesnt matter. You have to, so do it.
xilix 6 months ago
@XGeneralBeanX I'm right-handed, and I comfortably use my military with both hands. I don't understand why left-handed folks complain about it.
OverYunder 1 year ago

Thanks,

I have one of the original Spyderco Military models that I purchased in 1997. The blade is CPM440V. I have carried this blade on three continents and in two combat zones and only this year sent it to Spyderco to have it reworked. Love this knife and carry it everyday.
