TFK B-17 Bombing Run

Interesting. My dad's B-17-G-42-97217 (JW-L) out of Station #109 on Schweinfurt 17 August 1943 with an escort of 229 others against 300 Luftwaffe fighters. The 326th 92nd BG the only Squadron to reach the target and even then it wasn't enough. Others had to abort. The 8th came back on 14 October on what is called "Black Thursday." Could carry at least 6000 lbs of bombs with 500 rounds of ammo, but that only lasts about a minute; had to be conservative on the firing. No fighter escort either.

It's flyable but with external views only ... that's why we didn't do any high alt bombing, we had to go low and judge when to release the bombs.
