  • three nitro bases and benzen circle

  • or you could just buy a sparkler :P

  • FIRE ! FIRE ! FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRE !

  • RIP, watchglass.

  • Lol at the University that I go to there's this jar of DRY Picric Acid in this really really old cupboard exposed to sunlight and the funny thing is that on it there's written "Explosive when Dry" yet none of the technicians seem to give a fuck.

  • @xRaIDeNx69

Yeah, they'll learn when it blows up and takes most of the building with it.

  • @xRaIDeNx69 lol, take it! and then go blow something up with it.

  • @xRaIDeNx69 You've GOT to be kidding... it's more explosive than TNT. They just evacuated a hospital today and had the Bomb Squad come in to remove it for a small jar of it. Just call the police and report it. You'll be doing everyone a favor.

  • @StCreed

Yeah, being more explosive than TNT I remember my chemistry lecturer saying that they use TNP to explode TNT munitions. Hmm, I honestly don't think it is there anymore seeing that the whole class had to work with this chemical about 6 months ago and if I'm not mistaken they used the jar that I was referring to. Of course they filled it up with shitloads of oil and it was quite a pain to work with since it stains very easily.

  • What temp did that burn at?

  • Amazingly enough, they found a 500g bottle of this stuff, high purity, in a chemical storage room for a chemistry class last year here in Norway, and guess what? Whe teacher who found it bangs it hard onto the table, and evacuate the school. The millitary comes with their bomb squad, and sends a robot in to get it... And they detonatet it out on the lawn...

  • Lol, they do it more for show and as a justification of their job than anything. It's not that dangerous if kept away from metals, which may be what the cap is made of. It disposed of equally as well if doused and diluted in water.

  • seems not pure enough. very good job anyway.

  • rocket fuel !! lol (that was a joke ofc)

    +5

  • :38 *PINK* you just destroyed your dish :D

  • nice vid

  • How toxic exactly is picric acid? I heard it is quite toxic and can cause liver failure?

Also, is it hard to detonate? Will a 1gram blasting cap of acetone peroxide det it? (I make AP under 10 celcius, neutralize it properly and I mix with AN 1:1 to make it more dense thus making it less shock sensitive)

  • Not that toxic if you wear gloves and don't spill it all over you. Getting it on the skin isn't a big deal either, just a yellow stain that lasts a week! It is somewhat "hard" to detonate as it's probably as sensitive as TNT. And no, you are going to need much more than a gram to get it to det, but you could always experiment :P

  • what would happen if you tried to melt it?

  • If you are quite sure it's pure, not too much-you can cast it if you want.

  • Picric acid will fuck you up. If about as poisonous as arsenic, if not more. Fumes, skin contact, ingestion, any of it will give you liver failure and severe nerve damage. Dont mess with it.

  • Bullshit. I think the fact that you implied it "fumes" is a testament to the credibility of this comment.

  • I'm curious, do you guys think magnesium picrate will make a nice explosive?

  • I would think it would be similar to sodium, potassium or other alkali metal picrates- much less stable than the acid itself and lower vod.

  • you made it from aspirines?

  • yep

  • how did you neutralize it? Is it necessary?

  • neutralization is not necessary since it IS an acid. But recrystallization is usually a good idea.

  • Neutralization is not necessary, and it is dangerous (TNP forms picrates with bases).

  • I successfully made Potassium Picrate. Not a very strong explosive, but well worth to be tested and uploaded.

  • does it only detonate under pressure?

  • It takes a good amount of shock to det. Hammer will not do it; you need some type of initiating primary or blasting cap.

  • do you think that silver acetylide could do it?

  • Probably, but you'd need to use a lot.

  • hi.. i saw this thing ''Tetrazene'' in a book... can you make some of it? it says its friction sensitive and you can ignite with as spark(:

  • detonation it please :P

  • i think that your piric acid its a bad explosive i use acetone peroxide it so fast

  • God.. Idiots like you shouldn't be dealing with high explosives.

  • How do you know he is an idiot?

  • I was replying to someone else

  • I have some pure picric acid on the way.

  • nice :P

  • Hopefully i will try to make picrates. Do you know any explosive demonstration that i can do with picric acid is ?

  • Isn't TNP toxic? I'm not too sure but if it is, you should wear gloves.

    Just a suggestion.

    Nice vid though. 5 stars

  • Yes, it's fairly toxic to the liver and I wear gloves when handling it. It isn't anything to be over concerned about, though.

  • FYI, I am now confident this is heavily contaminated picric; the pure stuff doesn't really burn, it just melts.

  • Do you have any hints or techniques you use to create your TNP? I've been trying but all my attempts fail with glassware shattering or the TNP (dried or maybe slightly wet) fails to deflagrate. So I just stick to ETN/PETN/NG/EGDN. I would like to add TNP on there but I need some help. Do you want to talk about it via email or something?

  • You bought that lighter in Paris. I have the same one.

  • Haha, yes sir I did. Except that the flashing Effiel tower fell off :(

  • i don't get the TNP i usually see blows up so fast that you don;t even see the flash why does yours burn so slowly

  • Impurities maybe, but I only recall that the others burned slightly faster. I should not "blow up" if lit in small amounts.

  • OK

    thank you

  • wow, hard stuff to ignite

  • So, how do you detonate it?

  • You would detonate it the same way you would any other HE.

  • A lot of shock?

  • If by shock you mean mechanical shock/friction, then most likely no, unless perhaps you shot it with a high caliber rifle.

  • I mean blasting cap.

  • so its much more explosive when detonated?

  • Yes?

  • What a waste of a perfectly good watch glass

  • Not intentionally... meh, they're pretty cheap.

  • lol loved the sound. *crackle crackle tink*

  • hey there is no deflagration in your video....

  • What would lead you to that conclusion? It burned didn't it?

  • Nice Man. And RammsteinUrLife07, your profile says you are 50 years old, so i won't abuse you, because your an old-man for the most part, who cannot have any fun, and whom has no idea what "fun" chemistry is.

  • No, i`m not 50 years old^^ - that`s just fun. But your kind of chemistry has nothing do with science. It`s only stupid and dangerous too in most cases-especially in die field of primers. If your`re interested in explosives the videos in youtube should be enough an some reliable books on it. But people who only make explosives are damn fools.

  • Hey ''slither888'' I've been looking into synthesizing 2,4,6-TNP from salicylic and I'm finding a lot of info that is contradicting other info, i.e powerlabs, scimadness etc. Could you help me out please?

I hear temperature control is paramount like no heating over 80C until the phenol sulfonates.

  • Well oragnic peroxides are more dangerous than DDNP - but DDNP would not be safe enough for me. But it`s your problem. I don`t any primers - I`m just not wanting to blow up HE`s oder such things. Real chemistry is much more interesting than all those stupid explosives. I hope that you stay alive with your kind of chemistry ^^. ;-)

  • Why don`t you try to make a really small amoount with H2SO4/HNO3 ? You would better not make DDNP -its very senstitive and you could loose some fingers. DDNP isn`t worth loosing fingers....

  • I would say restrictions on trinitro anything in any developed country are probably really strict. It's also a hassle to distill your own NA, so that is why it is saved for HE that absolutely require it (i.e. RDX, PETN)

  • Also, if you do some research on DDNP you'll find that it is one of the safest and most powerful primary explosives. SWIM has made it many times without any problems except occasional low crystal density. You'd best be worrying about the epidemic of people making much more sensitive primaries like hmtd or acetone peroxide (they don't call it the mother of satan for nothing)

  • Who is this SWIM guy? Or what is SWIM? :P

  • In some countries TNP is a common chemical you can find in nearly every laboratory... In my country the laws in the case of chemicals are quite strict. NA isn`t a waste if you want to have nearly analytical-grade TNP. TNP made with NA/H2SO4 burns without any noise an is (sorry) more powerful than your TNP. The popping noise could really be caused by small potassium picrate cristalls which deflagrate. This could cause a detonation of the TNP in the worst case.

    Greetings from Germany!

  • lol, i carnt speek good german but. . fish cov , ins ca va spelen , shiza duncov..

  • I don't speak german, but I take that as an insult since I know the meanings of both shiza and duncov. Please don't be so hypocritical; waste your useless comments elsewhere.

  • You have to make TNP with concentrated HNO3 and H2SO4.Salicylic acid works as good as phenol when its pure enough. Your TNP is sure to have potassium picrate in it- thats the reason why is makes a sound on the video. Pure TNP burns faster than yours an without making a noise. Isn`t it illegal to make TNP in your country?

  • In response, NA is too valuable to be wasted on TNP. The salicylic acid used was USP grade (not some ground up acetylsalicylic acid). So the popping noise did come from the potassium picrate? I did think it was contaminated but SWIM found it just fine for DDNP. And I think you can answer the last question with a little common sense. Btw, Rammstein is an awesome band :P

  • check out my videos with TNP.

  • could TNP be used as a primary?

  • No, it's needs much more than just a flame to detonate, although it's a precursor to many primaries.

  • Nice :P Did you use phenol for your TNP?

  • Thanks! No, just salicylic acid for this batch :P I could buy phenol, but it's very expensive and only sold in 5g amounts it seems. I wonder if there are traces of potassium picrate left over from the kno3, since there was almost a purple color to the flame on one test.

  • Ah, I see. I have never actually tried it with Acetyl Salicylic acid. Is your aspirin purified? There are some insolubles present in the tablets I think. Some people dissolve the aspirin in acetone, I've heard of that, but I might try some aspirin one to time so I can calculate my difference in yield percentage :D

  • I have also used acetylsalicylic acid which is aspirin, either way works, but it's less work starting with salicylic since you don't have to filter out the buffers like with aspirin. You probably get a lesser yield going this route, but it might be cheaper per gram. Idk, it's worth checking out ;)

  • Cool, I might try it. Anyway, very nice clip mate :P
