I'm a huge DMB fan and I actually love this performance, but I do completely see how people would say that Reynold's solo wasn't right for the song. Also, his clothes are very 80s.
@Tonycaveman none of his solos are composed. They are all completely improvised as he goes along. He also likes to play deliberately off-key, and has been known to brag about pulling off an entire solo without hitting a single correct note. Armed with this knowledge you may or may not respect him more, he is one of a kind and not for everyone. Maybe check some of his solo performances on here.
In case someone hasn't pointed it out already, there are similarities between Reynolds' playing and that of Carl Verheyen and what he calls intervallic rock. Just mentioning it because both players are not confined to the box pattern or scalebound, and can move around to create more interesting music.
Right and I think that's what he's going for here. Musicians who take chances with their playing (e.g. Hendrix, Frusciante) sometimes come off as sloppy or lacking in ability. But it's really much more interesting in my opinion than listening to the same type of soloing over and over.

I disagree with the solo being mediocre. I think the problem was the backing band playing the wrong key when he starts getting into the sweeping. But I'm not sure whose fault it is. You think someone would have been like... 'we're not playing this right!'. Either way, I don't think you could do better technically. Tim is a seasoned, and well educated guitar player.
I hate to say it but that solo wasnt good. It was actually a little embarassing to watch because tim reynolds is an otherwise great guitarist. I saw him live for free on campus at colorado state university in 98and he kills. I guess he just didnt have it this night. He's still great though.
He's such a visionary, i havent really seen much innovation like his since jimi hendrix. im sure theres many inbetween but not who go out of the norm too often
Not a generally a big fan of DMB as such, particularly without electric guitar, but I would say go and watch them do Cortez the killer with Warren Haynes, he takes them and the song to another level in my opinon. The beauty of his electric guitar playing is awesome, and I think more tasteful and expressive in some ways than Reynolds was here, though he is undoubtedly a fine player also. Peace respect to you!

Well, I just checked -out your videos and you look like the guy from Dazed and Confused that gets his ass kicked by the 'Alpha Male, Clint' at the end. But the Taylor is nice. That, and the football plaques are the only intersting aspects to your DMB covers.

i was at the dave matthews band concert at the comcast center last night and tim reynolds played incredibly well. gibson flying v, that les paul he plays in this video and a beautiful blonde fat strat out of a marshal make him sound outstanding. good time indeed

really harsh, but kinda true. still, he is one of the most versatile guitar players i've ever seen. he played bach, and he can shred. furthermore, he understands what he's doing. why he chooses to play such shitty stuff sometimes, i dunno. maybe its just a personal thing. but still, he can fucking play, straight up. mechanically he is ridiculous.
Well there's no denying that he knows his stuff.. that's for sure. However, I'm not crazy about his phrasing at all. It's like brya said: nothing he does is extremely memorable, other than the fact that he plays really fast. Good technically, but as far as discretion, not so much for me.
Some people are gushing over this guy, while others are saying he outright sucks. I guess I'm kind of in the middle. I'm not going to deny the difficulty level of the stuff his guy plays. Its just that none of his melodies are very memorable for me.

tim is MONEY on the accoustic. no one like him. its a treat to see old school dave with that chet atkins SST... with timmy too. tim reynolds is one of the few out there that REALLY knows how to control a guitar. all 10 fingers of his have a brain of their own. hes incredible. his song "stream" proves it.
I agree with the fact that this solo is not very good. but Tim Reynolds does not suck, so you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. So I'd advise you to go watch some of his solo stuff before you say something as ignorant as "tim sucks".
Part of what I love about Tim is his ability to use effects in such a way that they become another instrument in and of themselves. That's not the easiest thing in the world to do, and he makes it seem like nothing. His sounds always seem to blend together perfectly, and always add something new to the song he's playing. Amazing as always.
...i love Tim's solo from this particular night, kind of that "subtle perfection". For the haters, check out Timmys solo over Jimi Thing from this same night in Chicago. You're going to have to find it and scan through the song cuz i dont think there's a "solo-only" version out there.
Tim should have kept distortion out of this solo. Its too "Slash" for a song like this. he sould have kept his guitar on clean and it would have sounded much better.

I could care less what you think of my videos I enjoy playing guitar but you wouldnt understand because you dont know how to play. So instead of criticizing someone elses playing why dont you either learn to play or post your own videos.

i was at the dave matthews band concert at the comcast center last night and tim reynolds played incredibly well. gibson flying v, that les paul he plays in this video and a beautiful blonde fat strat out of a marshal make him sound outstanding. good time indeed

i hope u guys realize this is from ten years ago. today hes fucking AMAZING on electric. he can like tap and sweep and shit now... his phrasing is unbelievable and his tone is a million times better (now using fenders and marshalls). search some bootlegs from this years tour and youll be blown away, its def worth the search, dont do videos on here it prob sounds terrible and u prob cant hear shit

I agree with you. He's only KNOWN because he played with DMB. He's a shitty guitar player. Lame bends, lame phrasing, HORRIBLE tone, no feeling. I've heard 14 year old kids BETTER THAN HIM! NOT TO MENTION HE'S PLAYING THROUGH A DUAL REC WITH A CUSTOM SHOP LES PAUL. How the fuck did you make that sounds so bad?!?! What an asshole!

really harsh, but kinda true. still, he is one of the most versatile guitar players i've ever seen. he played bach, and he can shred. furthermore, he understands what he's doing. why he chooses to play such shitty stuff sometimes, i dunno. maybe its just a personal thing. but still, he can fucking play, straight up. mechanically he is ridiculous.

Well there's no denying that he knows his stuff.. that's for sure. However, I'm not crazy about his phrasing at all. It's like brya said: nothing he does is extremely memorable, other than the fact that he plays really fast. Good technically, but as far as discretion, not so much for me.

Some people are gushing over this guy, while others are saying he outright sucks. I guess I'm kind of in the middle. I'm not going to deny the difficulty level of the stuff his guy plays. Its just that none of his melodies are very memorable for me.

i just don't get it everyone. what is so bad about his tone. it's fine. If you listened to any of his shit you would understand. but just because it doesn't sound like your typical rock solo tune don't give him shit. this and the jim thing solo for the same concert are one of my favorite.

tim is MONEY on the accoustic. no one like him. its a treat to see old school dave with that chet atkins SST... with timmy too. tim reynolds is one of the few out there that REALLY knows how to control a guitar. all 10 fingers of his have a brain of their own. hes incredible. his song "stream" proves it.

I agree with the fact that this solo is not very good. but Tim Reynolds does not suck, so you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. So I'd advise you to go watch some of his solo stuff before you say something as ignorant as "tim sucks".

Part of what I love about Tim is his ability to use effects in such a way that they become another instrument in and of themselves. That's not the easiest thing in the world to do, and he makes it seem like nothing. His sounds always seem to blend together perfectly, and always add something new to the song he's playing. Amazing as always.

Reynolds really is great; but I do think that Satch and Eric Johnson outperform his guitar skills, I dont really like his tone either.

...i love Tim's solo from this particular night, kind of that "subtle perfection". For the haters, check out Timmys solo over Jimi Thing from this same night in Chicago. You're going to have to find it and scan through the song cuz i dont think there's a "solo-only" version out there.

Tim should have kept distortion out of this solo. Its too "Slash" for a song like this. he sould have kept his guitar on clean and it would have sounded much better.
