  • Let us all miss you Davy!! We'll miss you!!

  • Rest Well Davy!

  • The four kings of EMI (The Beatles)

  • im scouse an love people taken the piss its kind of a back handed complement...scousenotenglish j96

  • Such a great random song. I love the chorus and verse at once at the end of the song and the hand over the mouth vocals at 1:35. Nice random noise at end too.

  • Pity Mickey naively penned this number, he didnt take an extra half hour to study the scouse race, if so it surely would have been titled:

    MURDERING SCOUSE GIT!!!

  • great song

  • Wtf. I thought they would inslt ppl from Liverpoool in this..

  • LOL at Mickey... I love this song. :)

  • I love how peter played the piano in this song! He looked so into it, lol!

  • Love this song!!!!!

  • i know they r lip syncing sound is off of video

  • For some reason, Davy looks really strange to me behind the drums...

  • Hey guys, really. First off, I'm not trying to start any battles; the Monkees are the bomb. However, even though the Monkees sang their own songs, this is a music video, not a recording stuido. The song would have already been recorded so, yes, Mickey is in fact, lip syncing.

  • Also, he's not bad at it as it seems here; the sound is simply off. Plus, the fact that he is lip syncing cracks me up because they give him close ups on the scat part and scat is impossible, really, to lip sync, which is why he covers his mouth.

  • Also, they ALWAYS goofed around during these lip-synced "performances," so this one is nothing new. Mickey was making faces from the start, so he obviously wasn't worried about syncing up perfectly.

I had forgotten how much I like this song; surprisingly strong lyrics for The Monkees.

  • there was no "video" at this time and other tech were still pretty primitive compared to today

  • I have to ask what you mean by "there was no video". This is filmed with a camera. In most instances things are filmed straight to film which is much higher quality. However, at one point, the TV show The Twilight Zone had budgetary problems an had to film a few episodes straight to video tape. I wasn't refering to the film processes in my comment however, merely to the fact that this is a music video i.e. a piece of music set to moving pictures, eh? So, what do you mean?

  • 1:14... Why the hell is Mike yawning...? hahaha!

  • Micky worked in England as a radio DJ for a while. On one occasion, he played this song on his show and then said "what a stupid song"

  • Stupid song?! One of my fave Monkees tunes! While I'm ranting about the Monkees I have to say that I have every CD, and although there was a lot of crap, much of their better stuff rivaled that of the Beatles. As We Go Along, Porpoise Song, Auntie's Municiple Court...the list goes on and on!

  • That's funny...he wrote the song!

  • they didnt techniclly lip sing. they werent acually really a band yet were. they were men that got together and played music with each other from tv auditions. although the reason they didnt write many songs is because the producers didnt want them to. i know there not 100% a band but i lovvvvvvve their music

  • oh yea,i think the sound is off on videos not lipsyns

  • i love this song and also listened and sang into wee hrs. over and over guess thats why i got so offended by the lipsync comment rock n roll 4ever luv dem monkees

  • I adore this song! I've spent a few summer nights listening to it over and over again.

  • mickey sucks at lip syncing

  • you suck at leaving comments no matter how u wanna look at it the monkeys were great and ur not

  • Thats your opinion so whatever. But I agree, the monkees (not monkeys) were great for what they were. He lip synced badly on purpose i reckon. I loved that show on sunday mornings!

  • micky dos a lot of werd faces and it funny

  • love this song. filled with hidden messages.

"The 4 kings of EMI" = the Beatles....

  • this is my favorite song of The Monkees

  • i might be young but when i was little i would come home from school and watch the show with my grandmother

  • This was the first record I ever bought,my sister bought Itchycoo Park same time,I think I won.

  • YAY

  • Micky Dolenz was actually drafted for Vietnam. He didn't pass the physical because he was considered "underweight". Can you imagine if he had been drafted and sent to kill Vietnamese and been part of some of the massacres of civilians? It's strange that this series was so innocent during a hellish time in our history that destroyed so many lives (including my father's...who went to Viet Nam one too many times.)

  • Felt that. Bumped into you by accident. You take care and RIP your pop. x

  • no me canso de evr este video

  • I love the Monkees. :]

Peter is definitely my favorite, though. I remember watching them on TV as a kid. I've been a fan ever since.

  • my favorite monkees song

  • I love this one too!! They were before their own time. Love 'em!!

  • gran cancion!!!!!!!!!

compren su disco, se llama "headquarters"!!!!

    esta chingon!!!!!!

  • i think the lyric "four kings at EMI" is reference to the Beatles

  • This was an abusive term in England at the time, so it got "Alternate Title" to hit the charts. Mentions Micky Dolenz's first wife, Samantha ("girl in yellow dress/being known as wonder girl")who he met on Top of the Pops. Terrific number.

  • You are correct about the girl in the yellow dress being Mickys first wife Samantha Juste but according to Mickys autobiography the being known as Wonder Girl is the Queen who was speaking, while they were at Prince Charles Birthday party.

  • Didn't know that! Thanks for info.

  • Your welcome glad y, it was a great book would recomend it to any true fan, he said he loved England and after the Monkees finally imploded he became a succesful television director and as he puts it a proper gentlemen there in late 70s early 80s

  • kinda cool song, never did like the monkees

  • This song was Written by mickey dolenz about his experinces in England for the first time.

  • any day now there will be a rap song about randy scouse git

  • A brilliant song, buy a great 60s group!

  • Fantastic song. I've never really understood why The Monkeys seem to be so maligned these days.

  • I meant Monkees

  • They did sing the songs. Only Mike Nesmith, Peter Tork were natural musicians and songwriters. Davey Jones and Mickey Dolenz were what we call are "prettyfaces".

Nesmith wrote the song "A Different Song" sung by Linda Rondstandt.

Nesmith wrote some of the songs, so far Neil Diamond wrote most of them.

  • That would be "Different Drum" by Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Ponies. Mickey Dolenz had a long history as an actor child and could play and sing - he has the best voice in my humble opinion. Diamond wrote a couple but there was also Boyce and Hart, Carole King and Harry Nilsson. "natural musician"? Someone that comes out playing the cello from birth? Who is "we" as in "we call them prettyfaces"? I have seen them 3 times live and they were engaging, self mocking & a friggin ball.

  • Why are you taking "we" as if it was personal. I was saying that as a figure of speech.

When I referred Dolenz and Jones as "prettyfaces", the people who created the group wanted a "perfect" image of the band. Those who auditioned, one of them being Paul Williams, who is a known singer and songwriter and can play any instrument, was passed over because he was too stalky and short.

Dolenz and Jones could sing but did not know how to play an instrument; they took up lessons during the series run.

  • Well actually Micky was a very good guitar player before the Monkees and he had also been playing the piano since he was 8, the only lessons he took was on the drums, which he said in his autobiography that he practiced on til his hands bled.

  • You should read about a band before you talk shit. All 4 of the Monkees had careers in music before The Monkees deal came along. Mike was an accomplished singer/songwriter already, Peter had been in Greenwich Village and playing at clubs, Micky had been in a band previously, and Davy was on Broadway and a solo singer. Mike and Peter already knew how to play a wide variety of instruments, and Micky knew how to play guitar, but he had to learn how to play drums.

  • Mike Nesmith still records to this today and his solo albums are well worth checking out.

  • They might have been manufactured but all groups are that to a certain degree. You know "fit the suit"? However the Monkees hung around with the Beatles a bit because they related to one another. They were hanging around with Nicholson too. They're definately part of the 60's era.

  • This is an awesome song.

  • they're cute dorks

  • anyone else notice davy is standing up playing drums hahahaha thats how short he is

  • i love this song !! XD <333

  • I just love this song. it's my favourite Monkees song of all time. in fact, I'll get it stuck in my head for days on end. I've been a Monkees fan for most of my 45 years, and while they were never musical geniuses, they sure put out some cute tunes. thanks for posting this one. sometimes I just need to hear it.

  • Yep, I know what you mean. ;)

  • NICE!

  • You're wrong. It couldn't be called anything. For example, it couldn't be called "A Bad Song" or "The Worst Song Ever."

  • yes but at no point in the song do they say "Im a randy scouce git and thats about it, I come from the pool and I think lasses are cool etc?

  • The song is about Micky's trip to England, and he heard the phrase used in a television program, and thought it was funny. He didn't know what it meant, but Davy did, so it's also called "Alternative Title."

Some people also think it's about the Beatles.

Hope that clears things up for you.

  • this song was written about ringo starr drummer for the beatles..it was poking fun at ringo ..but all in friendliness

  • While still freinds with Ringo today, Micky said in his autobiography that it was about his entire trip to England, with references to his future wife Samantha Juste, the Beatles, the queen and other observations that he made while there. Check out his book its a great read

  • Great video OrangeTabbyCat3. My whole family loves The Monkeys. Yep Hindasound, Nerdy is a good thing. I'm dweeby though. I'm still welcome right? ;oD I just don't want to cut off my Tears for Fears pomp and rat tail. :o)

  • i looooooooooooove this song!! :D

  • Could it be That they were taking something at the time. Must have been on something to come up with a crazy tune and title ?

  • Is Mike playing a Chet Atkins " Tennesyan" guitar in blonde ???

    forgive the typos,

    YJ

  • Great! The Monkees best songs were their non-hits.

  • I love this song. They played it over the sound system before the Mighty Mighty Bosstones came on this past summer. This song was pretty punk before punk was even a thought in anyone's mind. Great song, I've found an appreciation for The Monkees.

  • Correction! 'The valet at the door' is the penguin, 'There are birds out on the sidewalk'refers to girls, as they were known as 'birds' in uk slang at the time. We don't say 'sidewalk' but 'pavement' though. He, (Mickey), as has been explained in other posts, has met is future wife, (wearing a yellow dress), at a party in London, (also attended by The Beatles).

  • Whoa... you're smart:)

  • He reminds me of a penguin with fuel and plastered hair.....

  • I believe it's "with few and plastered hair"

  • It's too bad that Mickey isn't remembered more for discovering Hendrix and Monterey. The Monkees and Hendrix concert may have been a disaster, but can't blame him for trying!

  • Although the Statler Brothers 'Flowers on the wall' is great, micky did it first with this one..

  • This song is funny (@-@)

  • what the f

  • I love this song. Micky in my opinion was the most weirdest and unique of the Monkees. love him.

  • While I think each member was wonderfully unique, it was always Mike's brain I wanted to pick.

  • Melody is a lot like that Nashville song "Counting Flowers on the Wall"!

  • its the song in pulp fiction when bruce willis hits marcelus wallace with the car.

  • NO! That song in pulp fiction is called "flowers on the wall" by the Statler Bros.

  • yes! thats what i said.

  • Oh I see... Sorry!

  • With Davy coming from Manchester they would definitely know what a 'Randy Scouse git' was roughly translated as an 'Horny Liverpudlian person of mild disrepute''Git' being a soft insult almost a term of endearment. As for the Beatles connection this is more like a tribute to the Kinks.Ok so I'm getting Nerdy, sorry.

  • The Kinks? I think the "four kings of EMI" are definitely the Beatles.

  • Nerdy is a good thing around here.

  • I don't know why everybody picks on The Monkees,Almost every band that came out of Motown used Session Musicians and Professional Song Writers and Nobody says anything about That!!!/In 1966 The Monkees Out-Sold The Beatles and The Rolling Stones Combined Sales,NO other Band in History can make that Claim/If they don't make it into the Hall of Fame, then Nobody Should.

  • Thank you! You both made good points.

  • It was 1967 that they outsold the Beatles & Stones and It was the only year. By the end of 1968 and the begining of 69, they could not pay people to come to there concerts or buy there records.

    Sad but true....

  • I Stand Corrected,1967,lol

  • I can't believe that 40 years later they are still complaining about them not playing their own insturments. Mike and Peter were able to play. Many bands rely on studio musicians. The Monkees were corney but they had some really good songs. Very under rated because no one can get past the fact that they used studio musicians. I saw them at Cal Expo and it was a great show. They played and joked about not playing on their records. Still they had some really good songs.

  • Thank you!

  • apparently they didn't know what scouse meant, i thought it was an overt attack on the beatles, but yea, *is a randy scouse git*

  • Mickey is the Jerry Lewis of Elvis Presley and Beatles Music!! He should be rewarded for his efforts in this TV show,, I just saw where Puff Daddy got a star on the walk of fame??? He's the lamest, bandwagon jumper in rap and rock?? How about Mickey?? C'mon people,, How many top 10's did Mickey sing on compared to Puff Daddy??? Its time to take back the airwaves with good ole rock and roll!!!

  • when the Monkees got control of their music, this was one of the songs,, Thank you for posting this! I have the Original JUSTUS CD that they made in the late 90's. And its good! The radio stations will not play old bands without being Greased, and its sad?? thanks a million man!!

  • What is this song about?

  • HandaCarr, it's actually an anti-war (Vietnam) song. The birthday boy refers to the fact that the draft was done by birth date. The talcum-powdered letter is the draft notice.

  • It's not an anti-war song, that was the other one he wrote called Mommy and Daddy (listen to the original uncensored version). This song was written about random things about his trip to England.

  • It's based on Alf Garnet,(a character with a waistcoat with brillcreamed balding pate, so penguin looking),who called his long haired liverpudlian son in law 'a randy scouse git' in the 60's comedy series, 'Til Death Us Do Part', (remade as 'All In The Family' Alf being Archie Bunker,in the states),because of the title, and git being offensive at the time,(bastard), it was known as 'Alternate Title' and I think was covered by the Sex Pistols some years later. The Brit references had a 60's cool.

  • Good Song!

  • I loved how Mickey always seemed to have been a proud graduate of the Larry Storch school of acting!

  • Woweee, Ed!! You pegged it! Mickey does the Larry Storch eyebrow watusi perfectly!!

  • Actually Micky Dolenz met Samantha Juste on Top of the Pops. She was a hostess. He and Mike appeared on it in 1967.

  • I love the tune as he's saying To a girl in yellow dress

  • These songs give me very pleasant memories of my childhood in the mid-1960s. I don't remember the videos. I should log on and buy Monkees D.V.D.s of decades gone by. Lots of neat tunes and talent. I saw Micky Dolenz in concert last month at the Palmer State Fair. Basically looks the same and seems to retain a youthful vigor and appearance.

  • did tthey play their own instruments and actually sing?

  • in music videos they lip sync and when there live they actually sing

  • I saw them twice on their 20th anniversary tour and yes the played their own instruments live.this was a great song and happy to hear all three shows.(sorry I saw them 3x in 81-82.

  • WHOOO!!!!!!!!

  • one of there best songs

  • Who doesn't love the monkees? They are so funny!

  • lol this song

  • Who was this song actually about???

  • This is the Monkees having a little joke. The songwriter was Mickey Dolenz, and he's referring to a trip to England. "The Four Kings of E.M.I. were The Beatles, whom he met. "Randy Scouse Git" is composed of 3 British slang words, roughly translated as follows:

"Randy": Horny, in search of sex.

"Scouse": A person from the north of England.

"Git": Sort of a jerk, or an idiot.

  • 'Scouse' means your from Liverpool , a city in northern england ;) x

  • "scouse" - Somebody from Liverpool, not the north of England...

  • I know what a randy scouse git is, i am from Liverpool.....but why did a band from California with a Manc lead singer sing about Scousers??

  • They saw an episode of Till Death Us Do Part and were amused when Alf Garnett call his son-in-law a randy Scouse git.

  • The Monkees never really had a lead singer, and Micky, who is from California, is the one that wrote this song. He wrote it while on a trip to England while meeting the Beatles. The title he came up with was the idea from lines from "'Til Death Do Us Part", the 1960s UK TV show, I believe the title was.

  • I love you Micky. :)

  • ...quite more than several Nesmith had. I'd say several is more for Tork )although he never sang much) and Mickey's uncensored version of Mommy and Daddy is ballsy.

  • I love watching Maike through this whoel song. He's so funny.

  • I meant Mike

  • I think they could have done a lot more with this video, tho i LOVE them an this song

  • LOL! Mike yawns 1:15. Moments like that are why I love The Monkees so much, not to mention that they're hilarious and talented. :3

  • cool.5*****

  • thanks for the insight :)

  • i know trhe 4 kings of EMI are the beatles who mickey met in england

  • who is the girl in yellow dress then

  • She is Samantha Juste who was soon to be Mickys first wife, He met her when he appeared on Top Of The Pops on his trip to England...

  • I know the 'girl in yellow dress' and 'four kings of EMI' references, but is 'being known as Wonder Girl' a reference to anything/anyone?

    Or is that known?

  • Wonder Girl is the Queen...

  • thanks! haha, I can rest easy now.

  • Title translates into american as Horny Liverpudlian Bastard

  • i love the monkees!!!! i have all of there tv shows

  • :):(

  • Hated the tv show but loved the music this is classic.

  • sounds like it inspired macca for rocky raccoon. the four kings of emi.

  • What I love the most is the fact Mickey's poncho or what ever it was actually table cloth. That's why he is sooo cool. This is such a good song. I love the Monkees. It's funny how my mom loves them. She got me to like them too.

  • I wish Micky had been recognized as the amazing songwriter and musician he was. At least he was respected for his voice!

  • It's not just about pulling faces for Micky Dolenz, maybe 70-85%

  • It's a tablecloth he had made into a poncho.

  • I've always assumed that Mickey's shirt was influenced by the fashion at the time. I think this vid was made circa 67 and the Beatles were into meditation and Eastern spirituality at the time. Check out what Davey is wearing as well - his shirt seems to be influenced by the same things as well.

  • I'm not sure what's up with his poncho but Davy is wearing a Nehru jacket which was very popular at the time. I want it lol.

  • Seriously. Micky has said before it started off as a tablecloth he found at a thrift store in England.

  • We are talking about the fashion and what it's influenced by. That Nehri jacket is sweet.

  • *Nehru*

  • this song is......differant.

  • In case you want to know? the reference of "The four kings of EMI" turned out to be.. The Beatles the group that inspired The Monkees.

  • I swear I've always wanted one of those full circle ponchos! Ever since I first watched this as a kid. Anyone know where I can get one?

  • Get the carpet in your dining room, cut a hole in the middle for your head, and voila!

  • Micky Dolenz wrote this song, which hit No. 2 on the UK charts. Believe it or not, This track does feature them playing their own instruments, with a little help from Chip Douglas who is on bass.

  • hmm yes I know, but although he wrote it it was not going to feature on the album until the kicked up.

  • Notice Mike yawning, that was protest to the song.

  • Mike didn't like Micky's song? Why not?

  • haha he wasn't protesting the song. They had to do several takes each time they filmed the song. I think at this point they only used a single camera so they had to do several takes to get the right shots.

  • mike is my fav!!! the monkees will forever be my fav band! <3
