Why the HELL is he playing it on the trumpet?! Isn't it the Haydn CELLO Concerto?! I'm working on this piece now and in my opinion, it sounds way better on the cello.

This is an insult and a disgrace; that such a perfect concerto, written for such a perfect instrument, could be polluted by such a thing. Particularly brass, since they are notorious for having the worst intonation (many people will put thumbs-down on this, but that's probably because you are all extremely arrogant and don't have a sufficiently good ear to tell when you are plying out of tune (which is by no means a rare occurence). So there.
I guess " Plying" out of tune is a new one to me. When you get to the nitty gritty usually you are given a concert A from the oboe, followed by the strings who all have a pitch center of their own and are very reluctant to tune as a whole. brass do not having a good ear? Our instrument takes way more focus and energy. Air, Time, Intonation, Transposition, mute tuning, air and fingers all of which is going on in a performance. Care to list what you think of besides whining during a performance?
i htink its safe to say cello and trumpet are both incedibly hard instruments. I dotn really think its wrong for segei to be playing something that was written for another instrument. At least he isnt butchering it like, im sure, some cello players do
There is no need to be insulting. The repertoire for the trumpet is VERY limited. Unlike the cello, trumpet players don't have a huge library of pieces by major composers to pull from. What do you expect him to do?! Since Sergei is a wonderful musician who happens to play trumpet, he has to find a way to express himself.
It's amazing that people can call his playing average. I mean, seriously. This guy is a genious. He can play circles around anyone, and he uses his talent to make beautiful music. What more could you want?
I dont know some of u guys might not have ears and heart!Art is art and your or my oppinion wont change that fact!He is gooooood and these statements wont change that fact!Played better at age of 10 than some of you ever will!Thats that!!!!

Nothing against the guy at all...even though he floats in and out of tune....but this Concerto is a CELLO concerto meant for a CELLIST to play not a horn player. Its insulting as a cellist to actually see and hear this. There are GREAT horn Concertos out there. Stick with in your own instrument!!!
Listen. Sergei has gone far past all of the trumpet rep. I'm sorry that your lame ass cant handle the fact that he does more for this Cello Concerto than a Cello.
I attended the 2008 ITG Conference in Banff Canada and sat right in front of him as he played this concerto. It was not the technicality of this, but rather his volume, soulfulness, and lyrical expression. I have never heard any one person place with so much grace and on a flugel horn!!!! wow.
Do you honestly believe that he does more for this cello concerto than a cello, or is that just an angry flailing? It's alright, but there is a reason why Haydn chose to use the cello as a solo here.
As a cello player, I can understand how you would not know, but Sergei is a trumpet player. Not a horn player. He plays flugelhorn (not French horn) to get a warmer sound sometimes.

With no disrespect, I find his playing is well within the compass of most players of the instrument, including cornet and flugal horn
So what is so special about this guy?
Practised a lot?
Sure...and from a very young age.
Perchance he might play (and record) ALL the Arban Etudes and Solos (and please, no more boring 'Carnival de Venice' exaltations etc...), then I will acknowledge him as a truly great player.
Uh... recording all the Arban solos and etudes don't automatically make you a great player. What's the point - you can have a much more varied repertoire than that. He does perform Variations on a Tyrolean Song and Norma regularly.
Sergei Nakariakov is not only an astonishing virtuoso with unbelievable technique, but also a true musician, an artist that can enthrall a whole theatre and leave everybody speechless, with a chill running down the spine... if you know what I mean!
An "average player"? Are you kidding? Have you ever listened to his recordings? "No limits", or "echoes from the past", or "concertos for trumpet"? I don't think you have... because if you did, you wouldn't consider the Arban's studies as hard pieces. Camille Saint-Saens's
"Introduction and Rondo capriccioso" is not what an "average player" usually plays...
@teflonde You CLEARLY don't know this guy. He is a GENIUS on the trumpet (and with that I mean flugelhorn, etc.). He is probably, check that, he IS the best trumpet player playing today. There is no better. He has played Introduction and Rondo capriccioso live in concert which an average trumpet player wouldn't even consider recording (not to mention this piece is already insanely difficult on the violin). He also recorded Moto Perpetuo at the age of 17. Doesn't that say enough?
Excellent performer.

I can't post a link in a comment, but look up "moderndivinci" and you'll find it!

I dont think you realize Sergei playing this is about how far the trumpet has come and how flexible and versatile it now is.
You would have to play a wind instrument to realize the difficulty. Not your fault.

Thanks for your kindness. Appreciated.

i rarely see a smile in the vids of Sergei. anyone seen him smile in a vid?

He cracks a grin at the end of the video of him doing Carnival of Venice. If I could play like him, I'd be smiling the whole time.
