@mrteemumilto they all look different. in structure, the SMS version is closer to the genesis, as both are trying to re-create the arcade version. pretty much every port of every game in the series, other than the ones on the nintendo platforms, tried to do this. Nintendo just had tradwest (or whomever) create their own game with the characters and some loosely parallel scenarios, I guess. the art in the SMS version looks like an upgraded version of the NES's in my opinion.

@mrteemumilto for me, the sms version is slightly worse than the nes, but not because of the graphics (which are superior on the sega platform). it's that the sound effects are more bloops and blongs, while at least the NES sounds a bit like punches and have more impact. the sms control was also slightly worse. but the sms should be better because it has 2 player and is laid out more like the arcade with better graphics. some of it is nostalgia though because nes was a more popular system
seriously though if they'd spent a little more money and made it a 12 meg cart, giving it decent sound effects for "punch" and "kick" this would be 10x better. fix the door kill bug, and throw in an instant vs. mode, and it would have been the best DD port ever...
wait a min?!...why i never seen this version of DD on sega genesis in the video stores to rent? at the age of 12 i was always checking up on newly released videogames for the sega genesis back then and i never came across this version
@15551cue I hear ya. I never saw it in stores either, but it defiantly came out in the US. it was an unlicensed title so probably had a smaller run. I saw magazine ads for it (next to "hard ball") and read a review of it in gamepro back in the day. I ordered it online a decade later. I would have checked it out back in the day had I seen it for sure!
@XSC3- Hell yeah, me and my lil bro used to smaaaaaash on this game- Why did we ever let our parents get rid of all our old systems and games... 1000's of hours on that sega man- and all you ever had to do was blow in the cartridge sometimes haha the good old days haha
@15551cue I came across it in a second hand shop when the Dreamcast was on it's way out. I couldn't believe it either because I had never seen it advertised for Megadrive. I bought it on the spot and a Megadrive to play it on
@DrClay999 So do I! I much rather prefer the gritty sound that an FM sound chip makes than a sound sampling chip that the SNES uses. That is why I like the Genesis's game music a hell of a lot more than the Super Nintendo's.
@Retro8bit It looks better than it plays. The sprites move way too fast and follow you like they are attached by a magnet. The gameplay is not like the arcade.
@veteranopenolano you can earn extra lives through points, just like in the arcade (and I have earned them in these videos). I never did finish the entire series, but others have posted playthroughs. There are continues in the game (and you can set both lives and continues in the options, enough to make beating the game a cakewalk even by yourself). I tried to consciously avoid using exploits or cheats in these videos to make it more interesting
@veteranopenolano my point is that yes, the game is VERY easy if you cheat (many wall openings you can knock people through to kill them instantly and they have no defense against the elbow smash), or pile on the extra lives and continues if you want to make it super easy. it's an actual challenge if you don't do this, however.
@r25rjr Not many people did. This was a unlicensed game. I wonder how many of these were sold in stores I saw one but didn't think anything of it back then
obviously the nintendo couldn't do arcade graphics, genesis could. but man . . . listen to that music . . . actually this might be the most annoying genesis sound i've heard. not only did snes outdo genesis, the 8-bit NES did too (probably just godly composers)
@TheTaskmaster well that's kind of an unfair statement. The Genesis had some great game scores as well in its day. And the NES had plenty of terrible, TERRIBLE games, so again, it's not really fair to compare this one title to all the best SNES (or NES) games you can think of. What this cart was trying to do was emulate the arcade Double Dragon. It didn't quite get there, but it was the best effort so far. That makes it disappointing that it fell short, but still.
@TheTaskmaster the real problem is the sound effects. The NES could manage a primitive but adequately satisfying "pak" sound when you punched people. But then again, the Genesis was capable of much better sound effects (compare Streets of Rage 2 or 3 to this). I imagine Ballistic went cheap on this one and used all the carts memory on graphics and had enough left over to make the music pretty close to arcade perfect and left it at that. the SFX are like PC speaker.
@TheTaskmaster Agreed. Genesis could do some good graphics (though no mode 7 or polygons really, like SNES). But the sound and music were awful on just about every game. Even the NES' bleeps and bloops sounded way better.
@poopmaster13 The SNES could only do polygons well with the FX chip. Virtua Racing on the Genesis using a 3D chip as well and it's a pretty good example of polygons. In terms of raw Polygons without a 3D chip, the genesis was probably better.
Not a good port. Even if it were released during the Genesis's introduction it would still be bad. It is running on hardware that is more powerful than the actual arcade machine. (The Genesis game was about 4 megs as opposed to the arcade's 8 however.) It would have been compared to Golden Axe, which actually rivaled it's arcade counterpart. -despite running on inferior hardware and still only having about 4 megs compared to the arcade game's 24.
@EvilTB so much more the pity... the golden axe port had its gameplay intact, and some more levels and the vs. mode, but the graphics and sound were definitely inferior. The genesis was certainly capable of doing a nearly arcade perfect port (the lack of colors being the main limitation). the 32x could have done arcade perfect. just think if they had done so, and they could have added extra modes and levels, fix the glitches of the arcade version, etc.
@TheUnbiasedGamer yep, the sound effects are awful, no argument there. Some folks have been complaining that the music "sucks" too. While it's not arcade perfect I think they did a decent job with it. I noticed awhile back that I did record the volume rather loud, and blaring it through youtube doesn't sound amazing, so maybe that's the deal. It sounds decent coming out of my sega genesis stereo (headphones or speakers)
@TheUnbiasedGamer I blame the way I encoded it and youtube. I was using an emulator's built in encoder, and trying to get the best video quality for a reasonable file size. the sound came out a little loud. it sounds fine through a pair of headphones off a real genesis (the music, that is).
@TheUnbiasedGamer. the emulation is fine (I'm using gens here which is not quite as accurate as Fusion but very close). I'm saying that the compression of youtube makes it seem a little worse than it actually is. but yes, the music is not anything special (I say it's arcade accurate enough though), it's really the sound effects that are pathetic.
0:48 The AI in this port of Double Dragon is really boring. Look at how all they do is follow your every move. It looks pretty frustrating to try to shake them off.
@candygameengine you've got that right. they follow your every move, which encourages the player to "cheat" by using the elbow smash over and over again, which takes all the fun out of it. if you play with discipline and don't "cheat" the game is quite challenging, but yeah. in the arcade version they would hang back and use other tactics, not just stick to you like glue until they (or the boss) are dead
Agreed, this is not a "perfect" port of the arcade version, but it is the best that's ever been done. A person who hasn't played the arcade game in awhile to compare might be forgiven for thinking it was, though (still, who could forget the great sound effects that don't get a fair hearing here?). DDA is a great game, but it really can't be considered a port, more like a remake. Great game, but rather different from the original, it's own title.
@XSC3 Did you play the Xbox Live Arcade version. That is a perfect arcade port. It even slows down when there are more than 3 characters on the screen, true to the arcade version.
@PoletBally don't have an xbox (or 360), so no, but yeah, I heard it was perfect port. I didn't care much for the art style of the "redone" graphics, but I understood you could play it without those remade graphics, too. Pity it wasn't released for any other systems.
@PoletBally I hear also that because the company that ported it to the XBLA went out of business, that it's been taken off of the service. too bad. I didn't think the "revamped HD" graphics looked that good, but having finally, an arcade emulation available was a nice idea. I don't mind games getting released as pay to play on these console systems, but I hate that they snub the PC every time. just think all the great taito/technos games that have never had a PC collection release. I'd buy it
I read a review of this game online and the review said this was a perfect port of the Arcade. Its a very good port but its not arcade perfect. The music and sound effects are off and of a lower quality and the colors are a bit different. But this is by far the best port i`ve seen aside from the Xbox 360 version which is a perfect port and the Gameboy advance version which is enhance greatly from the arcade version.
If this port of Double Dragon came out in 1988-89 like most of the other ports at the time it would have been MUCH better recieved (and would have been cut a bit more slack)
@JPThunder01 true, but at the time they were still working out how to get past the 8 megabit "barrier" in the genesis cartridge. that's why you notice the first generation of genesis games seem a lot less advanced than what came later. in that sense this game feels like a throwback. so to that I agree, it would have been better received. just think if they'd done it for the 32x? having a few more classics could have saved that from being a total failure (and making the saturn 32x compatible...)
@salgod This is actually a pretty lazy port of the arcade game considering the hardware it's running on. The backrounds are similar but still slightly altered from the arcade game, it's less colorful, most of the character's colors are a bit off (all of the Abobo's are black and some are missing their mohawks), the sound effects are absolute garbage, the music is ok, much closer to the arcade than any other port but it's still not quite up to par, and the AI is incredibly dumb.
@JuicyPlayer sure it did, jumping puzzles. and there are at least three areas where you must choose
which path to take, and if you take the wrong path, you get stuck in a loop (until you choose the right path).
I enjoy the art style as well, but it's a very loose adaption of the arcade classic (and it is indeed a classic). DD arcade revolutionized the fighting genre and was hugely popular.the nes game only exists because of that following.
@JuicyPlayer and the thing is, few people remember the NES Double Dragon today except as a nostalgia piece. DD2 and 3 are much more remembered, as they expanded the gameplay of the NES version to be more arcade-like (though still subject to the limitations of the NES). the nes dd1 was extremely gutted compared to the arcade version. heck, the single player adventure was solo and had LOAD TIMES
@JuicyPlayer the NES DD was going for a cartoon like and I enjoyed that art style. it was common for all the 8 bit ports of DD to take this approach. Abobo has a huge head, giant eyes and hands and tiny feet. the original character is just an angry body builder with a goatee and mohawk ("Bolo" is the guy the NES is based on, a variant that was bald with some stubble and usually lighter skinned).
I actually think they could have made a decent port of DD1 on the NES hardware (look at the port of Final Fight 3,
though it was a pirate/booleg, still, quite amazing). it's just that this came out in the early days of the system and was probably rushed out. it's clear from the sequel ports that the hardware was capable of much more
I should say the game is harder IF you don't give yourself a ton of health/lives and don't exploit the many bugs in the game. If you exploit everything, you can get through it pretty quickly, and it's a breeze. like the arcade, you can literally win using just the elbow attack (which takes away the fun), and a lot of enemies you can knock into the holes/doors they enter from
To my understanding, the Genesis version is based directly on the Arcade version. Though I think the main difference in the gameplay is that it's a bit fast pace, making it difficult to hit the enemies.
MDthornton83, it's probably the most arcade accurate port of DD that's ever been released (I don't count the Xbox360's Live Arcade version, since it's an emulation of the arcade version, at least in un-enhanced mode). There are many videos showing the arcade version (emulated in Mame). The arcade is better in most ways, though this has increased speed and difficulty (if you don't exploit the various bugs, that is).
Agreed. I wasn't putting this down. I was only pointing out some of the differences I see here. One thing I remember about the arcade version is that the gameplay would often slowdown depending on how many enemies were on-screen. And speaking of arcade accurate, I think they should release a Double Dragon Anthology or something. But then again, there's Double Dragon Advance, which kind of combines some of the best elements from all the different games and blends it all very well into one game.
Also, one of the most flawed home versions I can think of is the Sega-Genesis version of Double Dragon III. Trust me, the gameplay in that version of the game was pretty flawed!
DD3 for the genesis is pretty close to the arcade version and in fact, better in some ways. I agree that the hit detection feels a bit off in that one (though it felt off in the arcade as well). it seems very hard to hit an enemy and not get hit immediately the next time they encounter you. the Genesis DD3 is a great port of a mediocre arcade game. DD3 for the NES isn't a good game by any means either, but most people prefer it to any of the "arcade ports" of DD3
You've made your point. But why did I get thumbed down for what I said? It's not like I said anything negative in those previous comments with the exception of the first one.
I still have this game for the Megadrive! it was a great conversion all in all but the sound effects really let it down, especially when you compare it to the bone crunching ones of the Arcade!
Of course a lot of people don't play DD the "proper" way, which is with 2 people, and not abusing the glitches in the game (which make it pathetically easy, if not outright boring). If you're playing this solo on a keyboard and spamming the elbow punch, I don't blame you for thinking it sucks!
Just bought Double Dragon for Sega (which I didn't know existed till now) & the control response is lacking. I swear it's like when I have to battle 2 or more people on screen, it's like I should just throw myself off the cliff to align myself with the baddies to take them all out @ one time. I don't know if I should get rid of it or just trade it in for DD3 for sega.
I think the controls are actually pretty responsive and the gameplay is fast and smooth. It's just that (unlike the original arcade game), the enemies move fast and match your every move, including countering your attacks. The lack of decent sound effects also makes it seem like your attacks are weaker than they are. Once you get used to the rhythm, it's as easy (If not easier) than the arcade game.
Yeah, the sound is the worst part of this port. Again, if they had budgeted more for the cartridge memory, the sound could have been a lot better (closer to the arcade), and then this would have sold a lot more!
when I played the arcade version sometimes they would hide on the other side of the screen to throw knifes. Mostly on BOR mods. This game they chase you all over the place, well have to be more active lol
Karate Champ came out in 1984 also, but I'd say Kung Fu Master was the first "brawler" or beat 'em up in terms of the genre, since KC's fights were basically over in one hit (it's a sport).
It looks hard because I'm trying to actually play skillfully and not just be "cheap" and exploit the many glitches in the game (like the invincible elbow attack).
no, just one difficulty. You can choose your number of lives and continues. At the highest level you're basically unstoppable (you'd have to kill yourself a lot to actually lose), especially if you use the elbow attack frequently.
Agreed, scir91. Though I did like the "VS. mode" in DD1 for the NES. That was probably the one redeeming feature for that version. I always dreamed of what it would be like with arcade graphics and moves!
It's not just you drag0n666... the sound effects ARE terrible, even on the original cart. The arcade sound effects are missing or fudged poorly.
Sadly, they could have avoided this, by using a higher capacity memory cartridge than they did. I imagine they were stuck with an 8 meg capacity because this was an unlicensed game (Ballistic's, formerly accolade, "Arcade Blockbusters" series), iirc. Look at a similar game like SOR3 which has great sound & graphics.
man if i had this version of ddragon rather than c64 when i was younger, id be jackin myself off. c64 ddragon made me cry in horrendous dissapointment, i loved this at the arcade
yeah i just checked it here on youtube. the gameplay was amazing for its time on that system. you could also play 2 players! of course genesis would have better graphics but the atari version was greatER in quality. i also liked the music in the atari 2600 version
I wouldn't say the 2600 version was better than the Genesis... but the 2600 version DID have a Vs. mode! Pretty impressive for the limited hardware...
Yeah, I hated the "heart" system. It was just a needless way to increase the difficulty and make take it further away from the arcade game. It just wasn't done well (did it even make sense? Of course not). When I play, as I imagine most do, I always cheat to get full hearts anyway (either using game genie or exploits).
TheSixthQueen, not sure what you mean... the Xbox Live version is merely an emulation of the arcade (with an optional graphical "overhaul" mode which I don't care for). These videos I posted cover the Genesis port, which is rather different.
how so? streets of rage took everything that was good about double dragon and made it better..streets of rage even had somewhat of a storyline that double dragon lacked lol
You could say the same thing about Final Fight, I suppose. But the DD series still has a unique charm all its own (not every game with the DD name mind you, but the ones that were two player scrolling fighters).
i have 360 and i was boring already!! this is classic game and i want play that game but i don't know how to get this game and sega console!! maybe if someone can help me, please send me message for information. ty

I liked it better when game systems had its own unique style to its games, like sega had its sound and such, snes sometimes had improved graphics
(I say sometimes because of Earthworm Jim and Lost Vikings) and such. now the only difference in most games is just anti-aliasing..

@mrteemumilto they all look different. in structure the 8bit sega version is closer to the genesis, as both are trying to re-create the arcade version pretty much every port of every game in the series, other than the ones on the nintendo platforms, tried to do this. Nintendo just had tradwest or whomever create their own game with the characters and some loosely parallel scenarios, I guess. the art in the master system version looks like an upgraded version of the NES's in my opinion
XSC3 5 months ago 4
@mrteemumilto for me, the sms version is slightly worse than the nes, but not because of the graphics (which are superior on the sega platform). it's that the sound effects are more bloops and blongs, while at least the NES sounds a bit like punches and have more impact. the sms control was also slightly worse. but the sms should be better because it has 2 player and is laid out more like the arcade with better graphics. some of it is nostalgia though because nes was a more popular system
XSC3 5 months ago
seriously though if they'd spent a little more money and made it a 12 meg cart, giving it decent sound effects for "punch" and "kick" this would be 10x better. fix the door kill bug, and throw in an instant vs. mode, and it would have been the best DD port ever...

15551cue 7 months ago
@15551cue I hear ya. I never saw it in stores either, but it defiantly came out in the US. it was an unlicensed title so probably had a smaller run. I saw magazine ads for it (next to "hard ball") and read a review of it in gamepro back in the day. I ordered it online a decade later. I would have checked it out back in the day had I seen it for sure!

@15551cue I came across it in a second hand shop when the Dreamcast was on it's way out. I couldn't believe it either because I had never seen it advertised for Megadrive. I bought it on the spot and a Megadrive to play it on

That music is SO Genesis. I love it!
DrClay999 9 months ago
@DrClay999 So do I! I much rather prefer the gritty sound that an FM sound chip makes than a sound sampling chip that the SNES uses. That is why I like the Genesis's game music a hell of a lot more than the Super Nintendo's.
MysticArksRevenge 9 months ago
This game was as close to arcade perfect as you can get. Only thing missing, is some of the sound effects.
Retro8bit 10 months ago
@Retro8bit It looks better than it plays. The sprites move way too fast and follow you like they are attached by a magnet. The gameplay is not like the arcade.

any extra life or continues cheats???????????
veteranopenolano 1 year ago
@veteranopenolano you can earn extra lives through points, just like in the arcade (and I have earned them in these videos). I never did finish the entire series, but others have posted playthroughs. There are continues in the game (and you can set both lives and continues in the options, enough to make beating the game a cakewalk even by yourself). I tried to consciously avoid using exploits or cheats in these videos to make it more interesting
XSC3 1 year ago
@veteranopenolano my point is that yes, the game is VERY easy if you cheat (many wall openings you can knock people through to kill them instantly and they have no defense against the elbow smash), or pile on the extra lives and continues if you want to make it super easy. it's an actual challenge if you don't do this, however.

I love this music!!!
mistertitanic 1 year ago
obviously the nintendo couldn't do arcade graphics, genesis could. but man . . . listen to that music . . . actually this might be the most annoying genesis sound i've heard. not only did snes outdo genesis, the 8-bit NES did too (probably just godly composers)
TheTaskmaster 1 year ago
@TheTaskmaster well that's kind of an unfair statement. The Genesis had some great game scores as well in its day. And the NES had plenty of terrible, TERRIBLE games, so again, it's not really fair to compare this one title to all the best SNES (or NES) games you can think of. What this cart was trying to do was emulate the arcade Double Dragon. It didn't quite get there, but it was the best effort so far. That makes it disappointing that it fell short, but still.
XSC3 1 year ago
@TheTaskmaster the real problem is the sound effects. The NES could manage a primitive but adequately satisfying "pak" sound when you punched people. But then again, the Genesis was capable of much better sound effects (compare Streets of Rage 2 or 3 to this). I imagine Ballistic went cheap on this one and used all the carts memory on graphics and had enough left over to make the music pretty close to arcade perfect and left it at that. the SFX are like PC speaker.
XSC3 1 year ago
@TheTaskmaster Agreed. Genesis could do some good graphics (though no mode 7 or polygons really, like SNES). But the sound and music were awful on just about every game. Even the NES' bleeps and bloops sounded way better.
poopmaster13 9 months ago
@poopmaster13 The SNES could only do polygons well with the FX chip. Virtua Racing on the Genesis using a 3D chip as well and it's a pretty good example of polygons. In terms of raw Polygons without a 3D chip, the genesis was probably better.
ojideagu 7 months ago
the background music sounds like its farting out its soundtrack lol,, looks cool though, i honestly didn't know it was ported to the mega drive
sikokiller12 1 year ago
Not a good port. Even if it were released during the Genesis's introduction it would still be bad. It is running on hardware that is more powerful than the actual arcade machine. (The Genesis game was about 4 megs as opposed to the arcade's 8 however.) It would have been compared to Golden Axe, which actually rivaled it's arcade counterpart. -despite running on inferior hardware and still only having about 4 megs compared to the arcade game's 24.
EvilTB 1 year ago
@EvilTB so much more the pity... the golden axe port had its gameplay intact, and some more levels and the vs. mode, but the graphics and sound were definitely inferior. The genesis was certainly capable of doing a nearly arcade perfect port (the lack of colors being the main limitation). the 32x could have done arcade perfect. just think if they had done so, and they could have added extra modes and levels, fix the glitches of the arcade version, etc.
XSC3 1 year ago
I didn't even know this was ported to the Genesis! Looks good. Sounds awful though.
TheUnbiasedGamer 1 year ago
@TheUnbiasedGamer yep, the sound effects are awful, no argument there. Some folks have been complaining that the music "sucks" too. While it's not arcade perfect I think they did a decent job with it. I noticed awhile back that I did record the volume rather loud, and blaring it through youtube doesn't sound amazing, so maybe that's the deal. It sounds decent coming out of my sega genesis stereo (headphones or speakers)
XSC3 1 year ago
@XSC3 Yeah sometimes the sound is a bit loud on the Genesis. Idk why that is.
TheUnbiasedGamer 1 year ago
@TheUnbiasedGamer I blame the way I encoded it and youtube. I was using an emulator's built in encoder, and trying to get the best video quality for a reasonable file size. the sound came out a little loud. it sounds fine through a pair of headphones off a real genesis (the music, that is).
XSC3 1 year ago
@XSC3 Oh ok. Emulators sometimes do a really bad job with the Genesis.
TheUnbiasedGamer 1 year ago
@TheUnbiasedGamer. the emulation is fine (I'm using gens here which is not quite as accurate as Fusion but very close). I'm saying that the compression of youtube makes it seem a little worse than it actually is. but yes, the music is not anything special (I say it's arcade accurate enough though), it's really the sound effects that are pathetic.
XSC3 1 year ago
0:48 The AI in this port of Double Dragon is really boring. Look at how all they do is follow your every move. It looks pretty frustrating to try to shake them off.
candygameengine 1 year ago
@candygameengine you've got that right. they follow your every move, which encourages the player to "cheat" by using the elbow smash over and over again, which takes all the fun out of it. if you play with discipline and don't "cheat" the game is quite challenging, but yeah. in the arcade version they would hang back and use other tactics, not just stick to you like glue until they (or the boss) are dead
XSC3 1 year ago
Gameplay looks good but music hurts my ears
Deathknight50000 1 year ago
Agreed, this is not a "perfect" port of the arcade version, but it is the best that's ever been done. A person who hasn't played the arcade game in awhile to compare might be forgiven for thinking it was, though (still, who could forget the great sound effects that don't get a fair hearing here?). DDA is a great game, but it really can't be considered a port, more like a remake. Great game, but rather different from the original, it's own title.
XSC3 1 year ago
@XSC3 Did you play the Xbox Live Arcade version. That is a perfect arcade port. It even slows down when there are more than 3 characters on the screen, true to the arcade version.
PoletBally 1 year ago
@PoletBally don't have an xbox (or 360), so no, but yeah, I heard it was perfect port. I didn't care much for the art style of the "redone" graphics, but I understood you could play it without those remade graphics, too. Pity it wasn't released for any other systems.
XSC3 1 year ago
@PoletBally I hear also that because the company that ported it to the XBLA went out of business, that it's been taken off of the service. too bad. I didn't think the "revamped HD" graphics looked that good, but having finally, an arcade emulation available was a nice idea. I don't mind games getting released as pay to play on these console systems, but I hate that they snub the PC every time. just think all the great taito/technos games that have never had a PC collection release. I'd buy it
XSC3 1 year ago
I read a review of this game online and the review said this was a perfect port of the Arcade. Its a very good port but its not arcade perfect. The music and sound effects are off and of a lower quality and the colors are a bit different. But this is by far the best port i`ve seen aside from the Xbox 360 version which is a perfect port and the Gameboy advance version which is enhance greatly from the arcade version.

If this port of Double Dragon came out in 1988-89 like most of the other ports at the time it would have been MUCH better recieved (and would have been cut a bit more slack)
JPThunder01 1 year ago
@JPThunder01 true, but at the time they were still working out how to get past the 8 megabit "barrier" in the genesis cartridge. that's why you notice the first generation of genesis games seem a lot less advanced than what came later. in that sense this game feels like a throwback. so to that I agree, it would have been better received. just think if they'd done it for the 32x? having a few more classics could have saved that from being a total failure (and making the saturn 32x compatible...)

This one was waaaaay better than the one on Nintendo. At least they tried to port it from the arcade rather than just recreate a crappy game.
salgod 2 years ago 4
@salgod This is actually a pretty lazy port of the arcade game considering the hardware it's running on. The backrounds are similar but still slightly altered from the arcade game, it's less colorful, most of the character's colors are a bit off (all of the Abobo's are black and some are missing their mohawks), the sound effects are absolute garbage, the music is ok, much closer to the arcade than any other port but it's still not quite up to par, and the AI is incredibly dumb.
JPThunder01 1 year ago

JuicyPlayer 6 months ago
@JuicyPlayer how so? the nes had worse graphics, fewer moves (which you had to "earn"), more annoying puzzles. each to his own, but c'mon! joking? ;)
XSC3 6 months ago
@XSC3 NES version didnt have puzzles , it did have platforming though. I like the NES sprites better too especially Abobo's.
JuicyPlayer 6 months ago
@JuicyPlayer sure it did, jumping puzzles. and there are at least three areas where you must choose
which path to take, and if you take the wrong path, you get stuck in a loop (until you choose the right path).
I enjoy the art style as well, but it's a very loose adaption of the arcade classic (and it is indeed a classic). DD arcade revolutionized the fighting genre and was hugely popular.the nes game only exists because of that following.
XSC3 6 months ago
@JuicyPlayer. I am curious if you've played the arcade game lately. yes it had some flaws, but while
the Genesis version (as present in these videos) is close to the arcade, the actual arcade game from
technos is far superior (though it has occasional slowdown, which was one thing this version improved, though it
also makes the game much harder generally as a result). you can play it in Mame.
XSC3 6 months ago
@JuicyPlayer and the thing is, few people remember the NES Double Dragon today except as a nostalgia piece. DD2 and 3 are much more remembered, as they expanded the gameplay of the NES version to be more arcade-like (though still subject to the limitations of the NES). the nes dd1 was extremely gutted compared to the arcade version. heck, the single player adventure was solo and had LOAD TIMES
XSC3 6 months ago
@JuicyPlayer the NES DD was going for a cartoon like and I enjoyed that art style. it was common for all the 8 bit ports of DD to take this approach. Abobo has a huge head, giant eyes and hands and tiny feet. the original character is just an angry body builder with a goatee and mohawk ("Bolo" is the guy the NES is based on, a variant that was bald with some stubble and usually lighter skinned).
XSC3 6 months ago
I actually think they could have made a decent port of DD1 on the NES hardware (look at the port of Final Fight 3,
though it was a pirate/booleg, still, quite amazing). it's just that this came out in the early days of the system and was probably rushed out. it's clear from the sequel ports that the hardware was capable of much more

PopcornCoolie 2 years ago
I should say the game is harder IF you don't give yourself a ton of health/lives and don't exploit the many bugs in the game. If you exploit everything, you can get through it pretty quickly, and it's a breeze. like the arcade, you can literally win using just the elbow attack (which takes away the fun), and a lot of enemies you can knock into the holes/doors they enter from
XSC3 2 years ago
To my understanding, the Genesis version is based directly on the Arcade version. Though I think the main difference in the gameplay is that it's a bit fast pace, making it difficult to hit the enemies.
MDthornton83 2 years ago
MDthornton83, it's probably the most arcade accurate port of DD that's ever been released (I don't count the Xbox360's Live Arcade version, since it's an emulation of the arcade version, at least in un-enhanced mode). There are many videos showing the arcade version (emulated in Mame). The arcade is better in most ways, though this has increased speed and difficulty (if you don't exploit the various bugs, that is).
XSC3 2 years ago
MDthornton83 2 years ago
Also, one of the most flawed home versions I can think of is the Sega-Genesis version of Double Dragon III. Trust me, the gameplay in that version of the game was pretty flawed!
MDthornton83 2 years ago
DD3 for the genesis is pretty close to the arcade version and in fact, better in some ways. I agree that the hit detection feels a bit off in that one (though it felt off in the arcade as well). it seems very hard to hit an enemy and not get hit immediately the next time they encounter you. the Genesis DD3 is a great port of a mediocre arcade game. DD3 for the NES isn't a good game by any means either, but most people prefer it to any of the "arcade ports" of DD3
XSC3 2 years ago
You've made your point. But why did I get thumbed down for what I said? It's not like I said anything negative in those previous comments with the exception of the first one.

Stayrsaigh 2 years ago 2
This was a pretty solid arcade port, and I agree, the sound effects were terrible, but there have been worse.
clicheusername2 2 years ago
Of course a lot of people don't play DD the "proper" way, which is with 2 people, and not abusing the glitches in the game (which make it pathetically easy, if not outright boring). If you're playing this solo on a keyboard and spamming the elbow punch, I don't blame you for thinking it sucks!
XSC3 2 years ago
Just bought Double Dragon for Sega (which I didn't know existed till now) & the control response is lacking. I swear it's like when I have to battle 2 or more people on screen, it's like I should just throw myself off the cliff to align myself with the baddies to take them all out @ one time. I don't know if I should get rid of it or just trade it in for DD3 for sega.
wondiefive 2 years ago
I think the controls are actually pretty responsive and the gameplay is fast and smooth. It's just that (unlike the original arcade game), the enemies move fast and match your every move, including countering your attacks. The lack of decent sound effects also makes it seem like your attacks are weaker than they are. Once you get used to the rhythm, it's as easy (If not easier) than the arcade game.

XSC3 2 years ago
when I played the arcade version sometimes they would hide on the other side of the screen to throw knifes. Mostly on BOR mods. This game they chase you all over the place, well have to be more active lol
WaysOfLight 2 years ago
Karate Champ came out in 1984 also, but I'd say Kung Fu Master was the first "brawler" or beat 'em up in terms of the genre, since KC's fights were basically over in one hit (it's a sport).

drag0n666 2 years ago
It's not just you drag0n666... the sound effects ARE terrible, even on the original cart. The arcade sound effects are missing or fudged poorly.
Sadly, they could have avoided this, by using a higher capacity memory cartridge than they did. I imagine they were stuck with an 8 meg capacity because this was an unlicensed game (Ballistic's, formerly accolade, "Arcade Blockbusters" series), iirc. Look at a similar game like SOR3 which has great sound & graphics.

Right, Renegade came out one year before, but it was made by the same group, hence why later games like DD are clearly inspired from it.
