I met David Peel in the late 80's at the NORML headquarters on Bleeker Street in NY. We were upstairs in some room and they broke out a bunch of weed and started smoking. I tried to get him to sign a joint but he refused and seemed paranoid. I found something else for him to sign but he still refused. What a paranoid dick. My friend gave me a copy of his album and I was just a fan. Also I was like 16 years old so no way I was a cop. Now I quit smoking and his music sounds stupid.

It's called "The Pope Smokes Dope"... yeah its a joke. You think the Beatles/The Who/Led Zepp/The Doors ((all bands who are mainstream and taken seriously as gods)) could ever pull off naming ANYTHING that? Nope... Only David Peel.
John Lennon's collaboration (and album) that he did with Elephant's memory was the lowest point he reached in his career. They dragged him to their level, which was much lower than his.
@ragingbull888 Yeah. That's true. But all in all, Stern owes his look to David Peel. Look for Howard Stern's Hollywood Squares Parody videos, which David Peel was one of the guests.
sad that the sound is totally fucked on this show.. cause its awsome music to listen to if u hear it on the actual album or find other live recordings.. not being this messy with the sound.

Why Lennon would hang out with Peel is a mystery. Let's face it, Lennon was kind of a genius and Peel, well... a Greenwich Village hippie. I suppose Lennon was looking for a community in NYC and also local street cred, for sure. Then again, JL allowed Yoko to "sing" on his records. Didn't always make the best decisions.
Always refreshing to hear Dave Peel wrecking havoc. Good Guy! We met him in 1968, he was always friendly and not at all pompous. He helped us with a small magazine we published as students in Jr. High School.
I always find it so funny that yoko is always totally comfortable just being next to john, serving no purpose whatsoever to the song.... she's totally calm being worthless. yeah, and she also used to knock on random rock stars doors with a bunch of her weird friends collecting rock memorabilia and trying to meet rock stars. She showed up on paul's door once before she knew john asking if paul would donate stuff to them. Paul told this story live on howard stern. I ordered the remastered CD of this album from Peel himself a couple of weeks ago. He had a back issue of High Times magazine around the CD as protective packaging, LOL!
i hung out with this guy several times while i was couch surfing in NYC, he is older now and pretty looney, a fun guy though, he lives in the lower east side still and hangs out in (what used to be) washington square park ...he has some cool lennon stories!
great song remember this from early 70's on telly in OZ it was from an i/view with yoko ono
she was pissed off that Frost brought Lennon into the mix anyway another great song by peel is the "ballad of A.J.Webberman" ..".Bob dylans not your enemy hes just/not?? your friend...you are just a dylanologist"
What a joke!!! I met David Peel and his lower east side at the Blusesette in Baltimore circa 1971.. as an aspiring muscian at the time.. to see someone with no talet and at the time ..no knowledge of the guitar past 5 basic chords make it that far at the time confused me...but like the old saying goes ..'' not what you know...'' long live Momma Max!
I remember watching this live on TV when it was originally broadcast and just howling at the lyrics and the delivery of the lead singer. Thanks for the post.
David was one of my very close friends! Quite unique but lot's of fun! His music tells alot of what happened during hippie times! He introduced me to John and Yoko, and was not afraid to ask you to his apartment! Parashoot and mixing equipment!WOW! he was just amazing and probably still is. Play on David!
I grew up in Jersey and met David Peel in New York through some friends. David was quite a guy! We all loved him very much. There were many times I needed his advice or a place to crash for the night with my friends, and he wa always kind and giving. David's music was different , but we loved it. I was there during the recording of an album "Up Against the Wall MF'r" at Washington Square Park. It was all fun! Thanks for introducing me to John and Yoko, and I still love you today!
the reason was lennon like many of us was sick of seeing good young men drafted and wasted. Those who opposed the war in Nam (and many DID support the troops, most of whom didnt want to be there) are the real heroes. They saved lives and were the public conscience. Peace on earth now.
What a blast from the past! I remember when this originally aired. I promptly sought out David Peel (the only rock star with his name in the NY phone book) and hung with him, playing tamborine in Washington Square Park with him, and in general soaking up the NYC Hippie lifestyle! And a joy it is to see Tommy Doyle (guitar player with roach type beard) again - another old friend! Thank you, Pieman 420!
I'm proud to be a ... dad who just taught the chorus to his 6-year old daughter. Why? Because we just had as much fun singing it ("cock-a-roaches!") as these guys must have had playing it way back when. Can't help but smile, smile, smile...!
In Baltimore in 1970 I met this fool... he knew about 5-6 guitar chords when ""discovered'' in NYC... it is true that ANYONE can be made a star? kinda wonders what Lennon was smokin'????? long live the Blusette .. times long ago forgotten
David Peel is a real gentleman. I meet him about 20 years ago on St. Mark's Place in New York City. We talked for a long time and he gave me an autographed orange colored business card from his company 'ORANGE PEEL RECORDS'.
do some on know where you can find david peel songs... he made a song calld "god" with the The Lower East Side. I can find it. plz help me if you know.. thanx
the song you want can be found on David Peel & The Lower East Side - The Elektra Recordings...also you can try to google up the song...it should be relative easy to find.and its a nice tune :D
as all David Peels songs.
hope you find what you search...if you cant, contact me privatly ;)
It´s on hes album "American revelation" (or revelution, I don´t quite remember) wich also contains my personal favaourite song: "Oink, oink" I think it was recorded on Chrysalis or maybe Elektra, correct me if I´m wrong. Hope you find it, it´s a great album :)
I remember meeting Peel at the Statler Hilton NYC during a Beatle convention around '76-'77. He took the time to talk with a geeky teenager from Jersey - me. A real cool hippie.
I remember when our family friend went to NY to work and he met David Peel. he told him to visit the Philippines to perform on a club ( I never know that name) in Manila. But he declined because of the situation in that country ( Philippines was under martial law)
I agree with that - David smoked less than anybody around him, and also to note his hair and his feet and his apartment were actually extremely clean!
I know David Peel, and I am engaged to John's 12-string guitar player featured here. Although David's very easy to make fun of, most of it is a parody of what hippies are expected to be. He is actually quite bright. Lancy, slanc456, I'm Tommy D's platinum blonde "Better Half", call about the gig.
David, write me, why don't you? I still have the footage of us performing on Allen St. It looks great, and I must say I stayed in perfect harmony. Great day, it was.
Hey Lane, I will, & I'll get back to you about it. I'm so glad that the work you guys did is still remembered. ROCK ON!!! Keep the Faith!!! Hope to see you someday soon, Desi
hey i found the video on a grateful dead download site called sugarmegs dot org!!! i have known david for a number of years now!!! i still recall elephants memory playing at the 1973 smoke-in at central park emceed by aj weberman!!! anyway check out my site at pieman dot org
These losers who call you guys losers don't get the fact that at that time in our society, that was the way to reach the people. Some people have to realize it was a great way to get to the people as he was trying for US citizenship. See if you can play the 12-string guitar like my husband, with the star on the far right. And you guys still rock AND KICK ASS!!! THESE GUYS CAN KNOCK YOU RIGHT OVER. HOPE TO SEE YOU SOON!!! DESI 000XXX
Interesting snapshot of John Lennon in 1972, surrounded by his non-musician friends David Peel, Elephant's Memory (his 3rd-rate backup band), Jerry Rubin (in white shirt) and his talentless controlling wife - all leeches and hangers-on.
John & Yoko produced Peel's LP 'The Pope Smokes Dope' (still have the LP); Peel had no singing voice/talent, was just a freak show - looked like Howard Stern, lol.

I ordered the remastered CD of this album from Peel himself a couple of weeks ago. He had a back issue of High Times magazine around the CD as protective packaging, LOL!

she was pissed off that Frost brought Lennon into the mix anyway another great song by peel is the "ballad of A.J.Webberman" ..".Bob dylans not your enemy hes just/not?? your friend...you are just a dylanologist"

David was one of my very close friends! Quite unique but lot's of fun! His music tells alot of what happened during hippie times! He introduced me to John and Yoko, and was not afraid to ask you to his apartment! Parashoot and mixing equipment!WOW! he was just amazing and probably still is. Play on David!
marydes619 3 years ago
I grew up in Jersey and met David Peel in New York through some friends. David was quite a guy! We all loved him very much. There were many times I needed his advice or a place to crash for the night with my friends, and he wa always kind and giving. David's music was different , but we loved it. I was there during the recording of an album "Up Against the Wall MF'r" at Washington Square Park. It was all fun! Thanks for introducing me to John and Yoko, and I still love you today!
marydes619 3 years ago
the reason was lennon like many of us was sick of seeing good young men drafted and wasted.

John Lennon and David Peel recreate the Quarrymen.
And its true=Peel's drug addled image is just that-an image. He is very computer literate and was co founder of GEMM.
I always reckoned Lennon's greatest album was Sometime in New York City-and this is where Peel was first namechecked
thefamilycat 4 years ago

Hi Lance,
These losers who call you guys losers don't get the fact that at that time in our society, that was the way to reach the people.

Interesting clip all the same, ty for posting!
