just been listening to bread and butter by the roots, and realised that the lyric "a loaf of bread, milk and eggs stick of butter" comes from this. sesame street inspires hip hop, yeah!
As a matter of fact, I used to think the mother was saying "Potato Milk" until very young kids who were my age when I was very young, were quoting the lines to themselves what the little girl was saying to herself so she will remember what to buy where I learned it was "container of milk." Since I thought it was "Potato Milk" being said, and since the mother and the daughter are two African American people, I thought "Potato Milk" was a type of milk African American people drink.
@PropellerBusted Didn't see it on the Cleveland Show..I'm in the UK and I'm pretty sure I saw it on Sesame St :) All these years later and I remember too! - 'a loaf of bread, a container of milk and stick-a-butta!' (all I had to put into search was 'and a stick' and there it was :)
I havent seen this in 30 years....while making supper tonight, I suddenly got it stuck in my head....I looked it up and I am SO GLAD to see it...I LOVED it when I was 5.
Damn this one is edited too! The one I remember the kid passes all kinds of trippy crazy things on the street along the way to make her forget.. Very psychedelic it was anyone know that one? Ill never forget it.
@Wolfsheim23 Don't worry, the lost kid passing all the trippy scary things is another clip, and it's on YouTube too. Funny--my sister gets these two clips mixed up in her memory too. Not me! This one never *scared* me.
Surprised I can't find the one with the little boy who makes up stories about how the milk got spilled. Like a ballplayer did it or a demolition ball. Loved that one too.
I just used this in a joke a couple of minutes ago. Then I was like, "Let me see if I can find this on Youtube". And here it is. I remember this one, but I know there was one with a boy as well with different animation.
this is great , me and my sisters used to spoof on this when we were kids we changed the words around a bit , but now I will say in their presence a loaf of bread and the rest .... Its so good for a laugh ev en after al these years.
I haven't seen this in about 25 or 26 years, and I've remembered "a loaf of bread, a container of milk, and a stick of butter" since I was 4 or 5! I've even thought about it over the years, but couldn't remember the animation... good to see it again!! Thanks!!

I miss the 80's. Nowadays the neighbors would report that mother for letting her daughter go to the store alone.

Great Jim Simon cartoon!
I always liked his work.
He did the "Soul Train"animated train in the 70's.
A true pioneer, who is still going strong today.
