"I go to bakery's all day long, there is a lack of sweetness in my life". And; "when you get out of the dating bar, I will be here to get back into your life". I was unfortunate enough to fall in love with a heroin addict with a death wish. And can relate to this, especially as I was about 18 and this song was on the vinyl 'Modern Lovers' album, along with all the other best versions. How about someone uploading "she cracked" off the same album? I can't find it here.
This is empirically the worst song ever written. There's more musical quality in screams let out by a cat as it's lowered slowly tail-first into a wood chipper than there is in this song. Hellen Keller's "hmphrggrrmm" statements had more meaning. I'd rather drag my balls through three city blocks of broken glass than hear this song on repeat.
That said, it's so bad I can't resist listening to it every now and then. It reminds me that life could always be worse. I could have written this song.
@failboats said the guy who likes michael buble... one of the lamest and most unoriginal "artists" to come out in the past ten years... but y'know; to each his own...
my friend played this song in the car right after i got really hurt. i thought it was hilarious but everyone else was really pissed at him for doing that and they turned it off
@pettsy63 : No, it is not :) I guess it is too long and slow going to be so, Pettsy.
The Man who fell to earth's soundtrack is excellent, though. Maybe a shame Bowie's work wasn't accepted for the movie (it was reworked into "Station to station" ; the last album of his golden years).
@TWD66: the album simply called "the velvet underground" is my favourite - its is amazing ('pale blue eyes' and 'beginning to see the light' are my favs). The famous album that Warhol did the cover for (and that Niko may or may not have ruined by singing, depending on your point of view) is also solid and features the cult classic 'Heroin" and "Sunday Morning". Even "Loaded" has great songs - esp the first three tracks (Sweet Jane, Who Loves the Sun, Rock and Roll)
I remberber singing this (badly, but with lots of feeling) at 7am sunday morning. My stupid nazi neighbours slipped me a note next day (they complained about the noise of any breath I took). Finally they moved to a quiet (dead) lodge somewhere in the countryside.
Most likely, it isn't known more because the Modern Lovers only released one album which is, to say more, a compilation of studio recordings over 3 years...
I didn't check but I believe only Jonathan Richman had a solo carreer. And, to be honest, while one can be a fan of him, his solo works lack the "proto-punk" sound texture the Modern Lovers had, both raw and undertone.
From what I know he seems to be much more into ballads, loosing the raw side. Cool ones, but nothing innovative musically.
David Robinson went on to be in the Cars. The bassist has a long history of other musical projects (worked with Elliott Murphy, Arthur Russell, Rhys Chatham, etc) (I'm just blanking on his name right now).
I understand you've already watched The Man who fell to Earth. If ever you hadn't, the movie really deserves more attention than that it receives ! It's one of the greats in the Sci-Fi department !
i don't know what the deal is with people and this song. it's honestly one of my favorite songs of all time, if not the favorite, yet no one comments the video, and there is only one on youtube.

One of the heaviest Modern Lovers songs. I love "Ice Cream Man" and "I'm Your Little Dinosaur" and the goofy stuff too, but this song is heavy.

can any point to music similar to this? the have a Television sound which i love, also his voice breaking up...
bands or singers we might not know over here in old Blighty!
dougiebenny 1 year ago
@dougiebenny :
I would redirect you to The Idiot and Lust for Life by Iggy Pop. Check "Turn Blue" if you don't know it. Also:
- Spooky Two by Spooky Tooth ("Hangman Hang My Shell On A Tree")
- Mummy Your Not Watching Me by Television Personalities ("If I could Write Poetry")
- Bowie's Station to Station ("Word On A Wing")
- Talking Heads were mentionned and I prefer Little Creatures ("The Lady Don't Mind")
Not sure this will get your love. Mind developping on "music similar to this", please?

Also, many would advocate the Velvet Underground.
But I know them poorly, so I can't really say what songs or albums are best to check.
ps : I was talking about albums before. The songs are between parenthesis and " ".
