  • Thank you David Bowie for your cameo in my career. Love, Jonathan.

  • Outstandingly Powerful.

  • Still looking sweet heart, still looking... you must be somewhere... I hope i find you soon

  • This is like the best love song ever. Just inspired me to write the greatest love song i've ever written.

  • One of the heaviest Modern Lovers songs. I love "Ice Cream Man" and "I'm Your Little Dinosaur" and the goofy stuff too, but this song is heavy.

  • damn! Jonathan Richman knows how to deliver a line! Well done.

  • Is this the greatest song that has ever been?

  • Why always listen to the songs that makes me sad? It's most beautiful song, but too sad for me.. :'(

  • lol

  • this song is so beautiful, it completely describes the boy i love

  • "I go to bakery's all day long, there is a lack of sweetness in my life". And; "when you get out of the dating bar, I will be here to get back into your life". I was unfortunate enough to fall in love with a heroin addict with a death wish. And can relate to this, especially as I was about 18 and this song was on the vinyl 'Modern Lovers' album, along with all the other best versions. How about someone uploading "she cracked" off the same album? I can't find it here.

  • This movie is basically about David Bowie looking beautiful, right?

  • classic song !

  • fantastic

  • This is empirically the worst song ever written. There's more musical quality in screams let out by a cat as it's lowered slowly tail-first into a wood chipper than there is in this song. Hellen Keller's "hmphrggrrmm" statements had more meaning. I'd rather drag my balls through three city blocks of broken glass than hear this song on repeat.

That said, it's so bad I can't resist listening to it every now and then. It reminds me that life could always be worse. I could have written this song.

  • @failboats said the guy who likes michael buble... one of the lamest and most unoriginal "artists" to come out in the past ten years... but y'know; to each his own...

  • this is almost the most beautiful love song i ve ever heard!

  • I don't think the video goes with the song. - need something more delicate to go with a song about an ex-gf recovering from an overdose.

  • LOL, is this serious?

  • who's singing!?

  • @FucklyDuckly the great jonathan richman

  • my friend played this song in the car right after i got really hurt. i thought it was hilarious but everyone else was really pissed at him for doing that and they turned it off

  • I genuinely don't understand.

  • I go to bakeries all day long

There's a lack of sweetness in my life

Partly Mental Hospital, partly beautiful love song.

  • Is this Matt Newton's theme song?

  • @pettsy63 : No, it is not :) I guess it is too long and slow going to be so, Pettsy.

The Man who fell to earth's soundtrack is excellent, though. Maybe a shame Bowie's work wasn't accepted for the movie (it was reworked into "Station to station" ; the last album of his golden years).

  • omg, what a song... haunting

  • A new Modern Lovers fan here. Nicely done video. What made you choose the Man Who Fell To Earth as the theme for this song?

  • I'll take the subway to your suburb sometimes

I'll seek out the things that must've been magic to you little girl mind

Now as a little girl you must've been magic

I still get jealous of your old boyfriends in the suburbs sometimes

    my fav part :)

  • yyuuooor world is beautiful..............

  • thanks for the care you've taken over this!- lovely

  • can any point to music similar to this? the have a Television sound which i love, also his voice breaking up...

bands or singers we might not know over here in old Blighty!

  • @dougiebenny :

I would redirect you to The Idiot and Lust for Life by Iggy Pop. Check "Turn Blue" if you don't know it. Also:

    - Spooky Two by Spooky Tooth ("Hangman Hang My Shell On A Tree")

    - Mummy Your Not Watching Me by Television Personalities ("If I could Write Poetry")

    - Bowie's Station to Station ("Word On A Wing")

    - Talking Heads were mentionned and I prefer Little Creatures ("The Lady Don't Mind")

Not sure this will get your love. Mind developping on "music similar to this", please?

  • Also, many would advocate the Velvet Underground.

But I know them poorly, so I can't really say what songs or albums are best to check.

ps : I was talking about albums before. The songs are between parenthesis and " ".

  • @TWD66: the album simply called "the velvet underground" is my favourite - its is amazing ('pale blue eyes' and 'beginning to see the light' are my favs). The famous album that Warhol did the cover for (and that Niko may or may not have ruined by singing, depending on your point of view) is also solid and features the cult classic 'Heroin" and "Sunday Morning". Even "Loaded" has great songs - esp the first three tracks (Sweet Jane, Who Loves the Sun, Rock and Roll)

  • @TWD66

Personally I would recommend Loaded in this context even though my favourite VU album is VU&Nico.

  • @dougiebenny

Check out Felt's album 'Forever Breathes the Lonely Word', they sound a lot like Television. /watch?v=J_0YTROlgJM

  • @dougiebenny

Maybe check out T. Rex (Ride a White Swan is great) and Terry Reid (Brave New Awakening or Superlungs), if u haven't heard them yet

  • @dougiebenny Rocket From The Tombs - 30 Seconds Over Tokyo

    DO IT!

  • i saw the talking heads at cbgb's a bunch of times before jerry harrison was part of the group.

  • I remberber singing this (badly, but with lots of feeling) at 7am sunday morning. My stupid nazi neighbours slipped me a note next day (they complained about the noise of any breath I took). Finally they moved to a quiet (dead) lodge somewhere in the countryside.

  • What a great band that never got the recognition

  • one of my favorite songs all time.... richman is one of the best singers always brilliant

  • Absolutely splendid song.

  • gotta love modern lovers

  • Damn i love this song... Great choice of video!

  • my famely guys damn !

  • I hate who I've become.

  • i want to cry right now.

  • the man who fell to earth!

  • the keyboard player jerry harrison was a original member of talking heads

  • Oh !?

That's right, thanks for the info !

There's love for Talking Heads, here. I'll check his solo works.

  • @jennybabe69 ALWAYS HAPPY MUSIC BY JONATHAN. KOOKENHAKEN.....

  • it hasn,t dated because non of the sounds have dated

why dont more musisians know this bout music?

  • Most likely, it isn't known more because the Modern Lovers only released one album which is, to say more, a compilation of studio recordings over 3 years...

I didn't check but I believe only Jonathan Richman had a solo carreer. And, to be honest, while one can be a fan of him, his solo works lack the "proto-punk" sound texture the Modern Lovers had, both raw and undertone.

From what I know he seems to be much more into ballads, loosing the raw side. Cool ones, but nothing innovative musically.

  • David Robinson went on to be in the Cars. The bassist has a long history of other musical projects (worked with Elliott Murphy, Arthur Russell, Rhys Chatham, etc) (I'm just blanking on his name right now).

  • its amazing to believe this song was recorded around 71-73 and sounds so fresh. Also great film, johnathan should have played the role.

  • I'm not gonna lie. the last 10 views on this are me. I can't seem to download it anywhere :(

  • This song/video combo is overwhelming. Crying, here. Thanks for posting.

  • Thanks for your comment :)

I understand you've already watched The Man who fell to Earth. If ever you hadn't, the movie really deserves more attention than that it receives ! It's one of the greats in the Sci-Fi department !

  • amazing song

  • my #1 fav of all times, thank you sooo much!

  • i don't know what the deal is with people and this song. it's honestly one of my favorite songs of all time, if not the favorite, yet no one comments the video, and there is only one on youtube.

  • I guess people would comment more if the video featured some photographs of J. Richman & co...

I won't blame people if they feel the video is off-topic. Especially if they are J. Richman fans.

Regardless, thanks for your comment ! XD

  • The bowie footage works well, and plus, this is an obscure song to begin with.

  • One of the best songs ever!!

  • Excellent video sync for this song. Some genius - much appreciated

  • Thanks for your indulgence, jw :)

Another fanvid is in progress, maybe you'll like it too...
