Went to A bar I used to frequent one night. Real slow night, was about 4 other people there, along with this guy who was doin' a show. Had several beers with him, a lot of talk. GREAT night!
I sound like I am on my pity pot, I guess. General consensus. I live in the SE(more or less) in the Carolinas, "there are few people who get it". We or they or our Mamas and Daddys are interested in getting something, but few over here understand where John Hiatt is coming from. ln all kinda ways.
They say that everyone can find one John Hiatt song that is theirs, that just speaks to them. This was mine from the minute I first heard it. I never miss a chance to see him. The best way is acoustic, just John alone on stage!!
I remember seeing this in fairly heavy rotation on CMT back when it came out. Yes, CMT used to play more than the same 20 songs (not to mention non-musical programming. What's up with that?). Getting bought out by MTV was the WORST thing to ever happen to CMT.
I've seen them three times! Two times solo, acoustic sets in a very small venue. A great performer, and quite possibly the most underrated songwriter of all time! I can't stand how many times I've heard people talk about songs that this man is written that other people have made famous, that have never heard his original or don't even know of him.
My God! One of my 5 favourite Hiatt tunes of all time! I never knew this one was released as a single. It's incredible that songs like these don't sell a million/billion times. But it's great to see that at least it is much appreciated by his fans. John is one of the best!
We're mixing up drinks with mixed feelings. . .god, I love John Hiatt! This is one of my favorite Hiatt songs. How could you not love "there's only two things in life, but I forget what they are"?
Do you have a lyric sheet? I think he's saying "Fixing up drinks with mixed feelings"
I don't think he'd repeat the word "mixed" so close in a lyric. I don't have lyric sheet though. Freakln iTunes downloads is the only way i can get his stuff. I hate not having liner notes.
Having owned the cassette (ask your parents) since it was released, I can testify that it IS "mixing up drinks, with mixed feelings". The repetition is intentional, when done right (as it is here) it enhances the meaning. When done wrong (as it so often is) it just sounds clunky.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I personally like this video (and these types of videos) because a good songwriter tells his/her story with his/her words. If they need a video to illustrate what they are saying, they aren't doing a good job saying it. Plus, too often the song and video don't match. A song about a guy who is broken-hearted, but in the video he's laughing and having a good time. I'd rather see a video that has little or nothing to do with the song.
Well the last couple people who say that their peers don't get their taste in music... Our parents are cool and they listen to wicked music! We went to see Hiatt as a family when I was like 14. (The Mandy Moore thing is painful)
At the age of 16 my friends seriously snub me for loving John Hiatt they're all into Kanye West and that...
My parents basically raised me on John Hiatt and Steve Earle
When I was 13 I sang and played ''have a little faith in me'' for a charity dinner and my friend who was in a dance group was all like, ''was that that Mandy Moore song?'' all I could do was laugh
Good for you! Think for yourself when it comes to music...I'm 35 and get the occasional grief for liking guys like JH. I always say: "Hey, it's in MY cd player, in MY car or in MY house! You don't like it, you don't have to listen!"
I had the honor of seeing him get that Award at the Ryman...not that it sucked, but Robert Plant being there with Alison Krauss kinda took the air out that sail.
@ShortiSnappin Good for you! Stand your ground....you are the one who should be laughing at them. This music will stand the test of time, theirs will be forgotten.
I'm 21 and my friends always wonder what the hell I'm listening to, but screw 'em. John Hiatt and Steve Earle are musical monsters, can't wait to see John live again.
I'm 26 and feel that most of my peers have abysmal taste in music. Good to see other people around here who agree: John Hiatt, Steve Earle, John Prine...simply three of the best ever.
realnmake - I'm 38 and started listening to JH when I was in my early 20s. This is one of my favorite songs, and what you quoted is a great example of why. The way he sings "dou...ble...back-flip"...you can see her do it in your mind.
I've been listening to him since i was very very young my dad is a huge Hiatt fan and he has influenced my music greatly. John Hiatt is probably my very favorite musician. I'm glad to see so many appreciate him... :0)
"Just when you think that you've been gyped the bearded lady comes and does a double back flip, you run off and join the circus yeah you just let that pony ride" <--- does it get any better than that? I mean honestly. As a twenty year old I get made fun of for my love of John Hiatt, why is it that there are not many of us out there that truly appreciate his fine works of art?
dude ... anybody makin' fun of you for digging john hiatt ... well ... all i can say is ... just have to wish 'em well and shine 'em on.
me? i'd say any 20 yr who listens to hiatt has his musical tastes quite well developed because there simply isn't any better singer/songwriter out there.
i quit counting how many absolutely great songs the guy has penned/recorded. & i feel kinda bad for those out there who don't enjoy his art but then to each his of her own.
Good? I think it's Great. When he says "I have a hole in my soul and nothing fits there", It's classic. Hiatt is a very under appreciated artist. Rock On!!!
I've seen quite a few performers on stage. John is among the very, very best of them all. There is no better singer and no better songwriter on the planet. Unfortunately I have seen him live only once, as he doesn't come to Germany too often. I'd love to see him again.

it
that ' dub bul bac flip' each syllable on the beat
if i had a dollar for every john hiatt 'moment' in songs the guy's done
i dont know where the guy comes up w/ not just the lyric but the nuances
in performing them
it's audio artwork tho no doubt
