  • ya little monkey-spanker

  • Back in the good ol' days when RPG's were good, classes all had massively different feels to them and you actually cared about the characters and the games were actually made with LOVE. Now they're mostly copy-pasta trying to emulate the last best-seller.

  • FOR THE GLORY OF AMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I miss games like this. Although I never played BG1, just most of 2. I always liked the camera angle.

The storyline was good, but seeing as how I never played BG1, I didn't understand most of 2's references. I did, however, play BG Dark Alliance, and Dark Alliance 2. Even though they had very little similarities with the first Balder's Gates, they were still fun, and enjoyable.

  • @roomwithacatinit I advise you to play Baldur's Gate 1 too, though you'll mis a lot of the more advanced stuff, dual wield, awesome spells and a level cap that leaves you just below level 10, I think it's well worth it.

Also, if you like the angle and wouldn't mind playing a different kind of RPG, I also suggest the Diablo series. Mind you that these are ACTIONrpgs, so no pausing and extensive lore.

I also suggest Dragon Age: Origins.

  • @tiaxanderson to be honest though TuTu makesup for that by updating the slightly clunkier first HUD and system. however playing some kits actually adds a lot more difficulty, sometimes thats JUST what you want :D

  • @tiaxanderson Actually if you use Baldur's Gate Tutu... you can play BG1 on BG2 engine and ruleset. Wild Mage in BG1 <3

  • @TheChaos0 I always play the game as intended first, then add the awesome mods that I can find. Though after finding this massive mod pack which appears to be somewhat endorsed by the game creators themselves, it appears that there are a lot of things in the original that weren't as intended :P

  • The all time best credits ever.

  • TIAX RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'll be a dick and say that I have played and don't like both Fallout3 and Bioshock. Bioshock has virtually no RPG element whatsoever, Fallout3 is a genuine FPSRPG.

Rather then Interplay I blame BioWare for the great story telling in the Forgotten Realms series. On a side note, I think NWN with the expansions is worth it.

Immersion wasn't that great in Bioshock, good but not great. I think F3 had more. Biggest flaw that bugged me in F3 was that it felt a lot like TES4.

  • Are you looking at me? ARE YOU LOOKING AT ME?

    STAND AWAY, CITIZEN!

  • MOVE ALONG!

  • even though this song is available at the beginning of the game,i prefered actually finishing the quests in order to hear it....

Thank you, this brought some of my fondest memories of gaming...

  • I love this game and song ;]

  • STAND AWAY CITIZEN!

    i love the 2nd song

  • Rapture ? What a world !

Bioshock is very linear though. It's a game I'll play again, just to experience the world it was set in.

Haven't played Fallout 3. I intend to do so as soon as the price comes down to rock bottom. I'm not expecting the same atmosphere as the original Fallouts though.

The IE games are peerless though, in terms of depth, detail, writing quality - you name it, they've got it. Older graphics will turn younger gamers off. That's a shame. But que sera sera.

  • Which doesn't mean that I say Bioshock is a bad game. It was still good but Fallout 3 is a lot better game for me.

  • Not everyone shares my opinion on Fallout 3, no. A majority of gamers who played all three share it however. In fact, most that played F3 first tend to have the impression that the former are inferior due to graphics and gameplay - never over the RPG factors.

Similarly, most who played F1/F2 first found F3 to be severely lacking. So yes, it may all just be matter of opinion, but considering that the opinion of those who "came first" share much of my opinion, I wouldn't say it's far from truth.

  • @Humakt83

Fallout 3 is not a Roleplaygame. Its an Egoshooter.

  • @toughtguynumberone Fallout 3 is a hybrid.Like it or not, there are way too many rpg elemenrs for it not to be at least half rpg.

  • @toughtguynumberone Fallout3 is an FPSRPG, Egoshooter = FPS.

  • @tiaxanderson

    Gameplaywise it's a Hybrid, I know, a "Hyperid".

But, if the whole world after the nuclear fallout is as boring as in "Fallout 3", I rather want to die in the nuclear holocaust...

Deus Ex an Systemshock 2 are real FPSRPG, play them and learn!

  • @toughtguynumberone You do realize that a 'Hybrid' is a combination of two or more things or concepts? Say like, FPS plus RPG, which would make an FPSRPG.

Sadly, since my PC is running Windows 7 Ultimate x64, I can't play Systemshock 2 and I don't see any significant difference between DEx and F3 looking at RPG-elements.

Most simple implementation of RPG is different attributes, skills, levels and what's called a 'Role-playing game system'. It even has a wiki page, it's quite accurate.

  • @tiaxanderson

Yes, worship your "Oblivion with Guns". But I rather like Action-RPG´s with a good leveldesign and story. I hate Bethesda-Games, maybe thats the reason why I don´t like Fallout 3 at all.

  • @toughtguynumberone Actually in my first comment I said I didn't like F3, it gave me a 'this looks a lot like oblivion' feeling which ruined it for me :P

Also, one of the best action-RPGs (<- did you notice this is a different genre of game btw?), Diablo, has virtually no level design at all. Instead, the game engine is build to generate a random map or level each time the game starts. That doesn't mean it's bad since Diablo actually benefits from it.

  • @tiaxanderson

I like the idea of random maps in roleplaygames, because if you play it again, you don´t know where to go. It makes it even more challenging.

Anyway, I wouldn´t compare Fallout 3 with Diablo, because Diablo isn´t openworld. You should rather compare Fallout 3 with Gothic. Perhaps you should compare the whole game with Gothic, which I like more than Morrorwind, because it isn´t that boring.

  • @toughtguynumberone I've played some more games with complete or partial random maps, but most suffer from it. Diablo is the only one that pulls it off almost perfectly.

I've only played Gothic 3, but it was plagued with bugs so I couldn't play it well and I gave up on it.

  • @tiaxanderson

I know, I tried to play it too, but Gothic 1 and 2 are cool Openworld-Action-RPG´s.

  • Casts regeneration spell on Gary Gygax ...

  • Hes a little past that dude :(

  • Resurrection spell is what I should have said. You get the gist though ...

When will there ever be any games like this again ? I'm confident that the quality will come back eventually - there's just too much talent out there for it not to happen, but there will need to be a change of mindset (perhaps the global recession will trigger it ?). In the meantime BG1 + BG2 + P:T + Deus Ex = the best games ever created.

  • Neverwinter Nights 2 + Mask of the Betrayer, Mass Effect, Fallout 3 and The Witcher Enchanced Edition are excellent modern rpgs. About on the same level than the games you mentioned (I should know; I've played them all bar Deus Ex).

  • Not as good as the IE games imo. Forgetting Deus Ex, which in my view is not really an RPG, the IE games have more depth not only in terms of gameplay (courtesy of well-implemented D&D rules) but also in terms of story-writing, dialogue, visual art, music. The authors of the IE games were just more talented. I've tried all the others and they don't hit the same heights for me. These games also make you (the gamer) feel more special. They were written by more intelligent people imo.

  • Each NPC has been crafted like a work of art. The stories in P : T, BG 1 & BG 2 are so much more intelligent than that in NWN (I never played NWN2, I admit, having been so disappointed with NWN, which was such an anti-climax after BG 2). The writing quality, be it of dialogue or the general storyline, is vastly superior in the IE games. That's just my opinion.

  • You should really check out NWN 2 and MoTB then. Especially the expansion. The story is very... engaging and reminescent of PS:T.

  • Well, thing is that most of the authors of those IE games are still with their respective companies (well, save the whole Interplay/Black Isle debacle where most of those former BI employees started Obsidian), there are all cranking out modern RPGs. Some of them are good in their own right, but you are right in the fact that DnD type style systems aren't used anymore. Quality story-telling is still told in the modern games, but gameplay really is dumbed down for most modern gamers.

  • Fallout 3? You're.. joking, right?

  • Nope. In fact, I enjoyed playing it more than Fallout 1 or 2, which makes it a very great game indeed, though I have to say I never really cared that much about originals. Fallout 3 is much better than any previous Bethesda game too.

I like the combination of FPS+RPG in Fallout 3. Lots of interesting stuff to explore as well. Though people who do not like FPS might not like it.

  • I have nothing against FPS games, but quite frankly Bioshock was more of an RPG than Fallout 3 ever will be. The idea and immersion was severely lacking compared to the previous games, the wit and interesting dialogue, characters and options that were present in 1 and 2 were replaced by lame mainstream pop culture jokes that were then elbowed in with a 'didja geddit?' approach. There were fewer places to visit, that actually had people in it, and the story itself was lackluster and railroaded.

  • Bioshock is not rpg at all. No real choices, side quests or anything. You might just as well call Half-Life 2 rpg.

Fallout 3 main plot had oversights, especially ending (which was thankfully replaced by , but side quests were interesting and there were multiple ways to solve them.

As for places with multiple friendly npc (over 3 that is) in them: Megaton, Vault 101, Rivet City, The Citadel, Canterburry Commons, Democracy of , Paradise Falls, Tennpenny Tower, Ranger Compound...

  • I did say that Bioshock was MORE of an RPG than F3. Which should tell you how much of one F3 was. The main plot was railroaded to the point that there was only ONE way to go no matter what. Same for the side quests. No 'multiple ways' to solve them. There were two: Good or bad. No real alternatives at all*.

As for settlements, F3 has 18. More than half which are useless after you finish the single sidequest you get from each. F2 alone had over 20, all larger and with more NPCs and things to do.

  • *For example, in the previous installments you would be able to rat out Burke without handing over the pulse charge, plant it after Burke is dead and then haggle Tenpenny for a bigger reward.

You wouldn't have to be forced into taking part in the Tranquility Lane simulation: You could just hack your way into Braun's champer and gank him via those means, putting an end to the simulation from the outside.

There are several cases like this where you'd be able to take different paths in F1 and F2.

  • FYI. In normal shooters the effect of bullet is not decided by RPG stats like in Fallout 3. Bioshock is pretty much disguised linear game to the end unlike Fallout 3. You are obviously very biased if you think Bioshock is more of an RPG.

As for Fallout 2, I never really played it that much, Fallout 1 I had finished and that had less places to visit than Fallout 3 AFAIR.

As for sidequests with no options, yes there are those, you've just missed them. Example: female character can seduce Burke.

  • I'm not biased. I can just recognize when a game succeeds in immersion, story, and characters: Three of the more important factors when making an RPG - something Bioshock does better than Fallout 3.

And while F1 didn't have as many places as F2, the immersion was still greater.

I can seduce Burke and do.. what? Nothing. All it does is convince him not to blow up Megaton or score a little more money if I do blow it up. There is no alternative course of action there; it's still exactly the same.

  • Boom. He rules.

  • No praise is high enough for Baldur's Gate. The golden age of gaming - gone for now.

  • =(

    Ahhhhh the old days.

    Sigh.

  • "To the glory of Amn!!!" xD

  • Amazing music, and an EPIC game.

  • Lol, THIS Music in an RPG...

  • Ya little monkey spanker

  • What a shame Tiax dies in Baldurs Gate 2 just after the first encounter with Irenicius.

  • all hail the infinity engine! boom 5 stars...

  • Has Tiax mentioned he's going to rule?

  • Tiax does as ye will, but one day... BOOM! He rules!

  • DAVID SAYS : FAV PART 2.32 to 2.48

  • Tiax rules all! All hail Tiax!

  • thumbs up for you!

  • i miss that game, its weird that a old game got better graphic compare to wc3 and wow.

  • Crickey, tell me about it - I've played BG1 and 2 and NWN, but without a shadow of a doubt (or Amn, heh) the graphics in the BG series are much more beatiful and detailed.

I'd so love for a BG3 to be made in the same style as BG2...sigh...

  • Some people are just too lazy to go back to those good old graphics!

  • @amrbekhit "I'd so love for a BG3 to be made in the same style as BG2...sigh..." - That's the exact reason why I hate Fallout 3.

  • lols i remember this

  • the songs are available at the Bioware homepage

  • FOR THE GLORY OF AMN

  • awesome stuff bro!loved the game,loved the credits(rofl)
