I've got to agree with singthesilences ... Janowitz often bores me, despite the fact that she has a GORGEOUS voice. I don't think this is her best role, either; she's better as Pamina (and a WONDERFUL Beethoven's 9th soloist!). Bacquier, on the other hand, is a great Count despite his age. And of course Popp is glorious.
I can´t understand the complaining about so called poor acting. If you have a dream team like Janowith/Popp you nearly don´t need it - its all in the music and the voices.
I don't know . . . Janowitz was a good singer but this is still from the acting was very minimal. Good to listen to but I'm not crazy about the staging.
Janowitz is like a rock. You don't act with your voice. You sing with the voice, otherwise what's the point of live and staged performances. She can be pretty convincing on record bou on stage you need more physical expression. Just observe Popp.
Bacquier was a great singer and he is close to 60 here and still in top knotch form. His acting skills are apparent in this video. Janowitz is perfect as the Countess. An outstanding performance.
