  • but we already have Metro Manila duh~

  • I am a filipino... Spanish-Filipino ties forever..

    SPAIN Love Philippines

    Philippines Love Spain... FOREVER..

  • this is just hilarious. hahahaha...

  • the manila galleons are long gone. spanish is no longer an official language of the philippines, though, pragmatically, bringing it back as such would open the country to latin american markets and to spain itself.

the philippines is a floating piece of hispania in asia. spain is part of its heritage, the madre patria. when the philippines looks at spain, it should find a model. and when spain looks at the philippines, it should find a buried mirror, as carlos fuentes would say.

  • as a filipino-american, i have mixed feelings about this commercial. on the one hand, i spent a summer in spain as an exchange student and found it a marvelous country. i hope to live there at some point. on the other, i see how spain and the philippines have come so far apart since 1898.

  • nice, and incidentally, this ad gave a light-hearted depiction of the Philippine government's penchant for white elephant projects. But REAL Filipino white elephant projects don't get completed at all, and that is where the ad is wrong. jajaja

  • A great production! Very proud of our spanish history and culture... Awesome!!

  • poor production..

  • OH MY GOD I'm a Filipino and I don't think this is even discriminating or degrading. If it says anything about Filipinos, it's that they are united even in the smallest of things. On a meta-note, a lot of Filipinos are united in thinking that this is a degrading ad. Taking everything at face value, they don't know how to choose which battles to fight, thereby turning them into internet trolls. Chill.

  • puto castellano

  • RnAkhenaton are you a Filipino? If you are then you must know that most Filipinos, NOT ALL, but most of them consider INDIO a derogatory term. Don't shove your words on Pinoys' mouths.

  • Let's not misconstrue my point, now. I am definitely not saying that this ad makes me feel "bad" because it was produced by formal colonizers. I am just pointing out the historical context to which Western countries (the Americans included) have treated Filipinos, which is hard to ignore considering certain inaccuracies of the ad. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe I didn't mention anything about Filipinos being "superior" to their European counterparts.

  • I wish I were on drugs, they're awesome! Unfortunately, I only have my education in Filipino-American studies to form my arguments. I just use youtube to see how people would respond, and being that there are many other US Pinoys who are educated on this as well, I'm sure there are more than just two of us who share this argument. Also, what do you mean by "real Filipino"? Filipinos share a variety of viewpoints. It just depends on which education system you developed under :)

  • The underlying foundation for the creation of this commercial was based upon a stereotyped, inaccurate, patronizing view of Filipinos. The argument here is not so much that this commercial was flagrant, obvious racism, but the ideas behind it result from colonial ideologies from centuries ago that still remain subconsciously; that is why this commercial is widely accepted in Spain. The logic is astounding. If you are going to portray peoples you once subjugated, at least attempt to be accurate.

  • Hey did you ever been in the Philippines? tell me where you can see such a lovely and clean village in the Province. This ad is hilarious and portray the Filipinos as friendly people when in reality they are not.

Filipino always complain about racism when in fact they are one of the most racist people on earth.

    I Know because i'm filipino.

  • ...so that makes you a racist?

Actually, there ARE lovely and clean villages like this. This one happens to be in Banaue. But there are others like it. This video just romanticizes it.

Sure, everyone has some aspect of prejudice to their culture. My Lolo's perception of Black people, mostly due to stereotypical portrayal in American media, is fairly racist. But I think it's a little much to say they are "the most racist people on earth".

  • Reading up on your history can also explain the affect of western colonization on the Filipino psyche. Just a thought.

  • This is an insulting commercial. So typical of Spaniards to think this way about Filipinos. Things have not really changed since 1898. They make FIlipinos look like a bunch of uneducated fools. They don't have to go to Madrid to see a cosmopolitan city..just go to Manila.

  • c'mon comparing manila to madrid is like comparing the finest wine in the world with coca cola. Did you ever been in Madrid or even in Manila?

  • The traveller consider our (I'm madrileño) prides as things not to be impressed of. But the underground. So his fellow villagers are eager to build one like the one of his "big brother" (Spanish Madrid). Of course, it`s an ad and it has to be taken with sense of humour. But there is NOT any lack of respect for the philippino villagers to whom, I dare say, every viewer would feel not less than simpathy and affection. Neocolonial or patenalist interpretations are absolutly out of the question.

  • And, anyway, the intention of the ad is not to represent the pinoy culture, psique or reality.

    * Basically the story in the add goes like this (in case it has to be explained): a villager coming from Madrid, Philippines, visit the capital of Spain. Back with his folks, he answered the question about what is really great in the "other Madrid".

  • To all my pinoy friends: I'm not going to entry in your love, hate or indifferent towards Spain, since that's totally up to you. I only would like to share you the way the average of the spanish public would understand the ad: * It's a rural area in Philippines, a small village, like there are everywhere in, say, Europe or Spain. What is far to pretend, and not the meaning at all, that Philippines is undeveloped or has not infraestructure.

  • But it's still a misinterpretation of the Filipino people as a whole. Even the most rural of Filipinos have tv sets and have certainly been to Manila or Cebu or other cosmopolitan cities in The Philippines itself. They don't have to go to Spain to find advanced technology. Sorry. If you are going to post this on youtube, everyone in the world will see it and will comment.

  • This commercial misrepresents the Philippines, and in fact gives Spanish viewers an inaccurate sense of Filipino peasant culture. First, these actors are speaking Tagalog. In the real town of Madrid, they speak the local dialect of Surigaonon. The commercial was also filmed in Banaue, Luzon, to give the impression of a "Philippine village" amongst the rice terraces. If they wanted an accurate depiction, why couldn't they film on location, speaking the local vernacular?

  • Why are they presenting the Philippines as one homogenous group of people, not even recognizing the differences in cultures between various peoples within the country? The hats on some of those villagers are wearing are Vietnamese. While they are worn by some in the Philippines, it is not worn as prevalently as depicted. Also, a goat at the Metro? Not even a caribao or a pig, which would have been more truthful?

  • The fact of the matter is that the producers of this video intentionally portrayed Filipinos as placing Spanish society so high up on a pedestal, depicting them as philistine and unintellectual when it comes to modern infrastructure. The image of a wide-eyed, uncivilized Filipino was an excuse for Western colonization of the country to begin with, and unfortunately this idea apparently still exists today. Nothing is being done to repair the Filipino psyche, only more exploitation of Filipinos.

  • I agree iRepTown. Apparently their view of FIlipinos have not changed since they left in 1898. I felt insulted by this commercial as well. It is no different to me if a Caucasian got made up in black face and sang Mammy. Just because it is a commercial does not mean we as Filipinos do not have a moral obligation to demand proper representation in the world.

  • is this an advertisement or a documentary? Plus, it's not like the average Spaniard is going to know if they are speaking tagalog, surigaonon or cebuano, inthe same way you won't know if in an Spanish ad they are speaking Castilian, Galician, Catalan or Basque if you dont know them beforehand. I wonder how you depict people from abroad in your commercials, which must be at least 1 or 2 hours long explaining the complexity of foreign cultures.

  • "is this an advertisement or a documentary?" My point exactly, appreciated. Since it's a TV ad, people don't know the difference between a Filipino or Vietnamese person. Doesn't matter, they're all Chinks! This perpetuates the status quo of Filipinos being considered a "lower class" population in Spanish society. I've also never made my own commercial, however if I ever did I would just simply from using stereotypes about the population of people that my country subjugated historically.

  • @iRepTown

Last I heard Surigaonon was a LANGUAGE, not a dialect. If it were, a tagalog like me would've understood it, without having to learn it.

There is a big difference between the two. Please learn it. You yourself say that we are not homogenous. That includes our languages; to say that all non-Tagalog langages are mere dialects contradicts your assertion.

  • what the mesage of the commercial? It means the spanish government finance the subway project in mindanao? Additional Debt of the philippines.

  • nice video. is this comerical in TV. what is Metro? what kind of business is that? Thanks.

  • metro means subway

  • Spanish love philippines :) we have comon culture :) stop racist we are friend

  • Las Filipinas loves Spain tambien! ^^,

Saludos a desde Las Filipinas ^^,

  • @KingRaffers Yay! Espana Odias Las Islas Filipinas :D

  • @Ziegour ´ Hablas mierda, so acomplejado.

  • Comment removed

  • Hahah After 350 years of sharing destiny and more than 100 years of oblivion we need to add our common culture another construction: Metro Madrid in Spain and Filipinas. Bravo. In addition 'Tuneladora' in spanish is the same 'Tuneladora',lol.

  • In my opinion in some way it promote links, not only betwen the stations ha ha . And this is good too.

  • I like Philipines country. I can see the reality of the country far than this ad. The ad it is fun and nice. Nice characters, idea and dialogues.

It is a beatiful remind of Philippines so far we are. So close we were one day. But please don´t consider something like that as ana attack to Philipines or its independence. Of course Philippines is nowadays a big and important conuntry in the world context and everyday more.

  • lol the best ad ever and i'm filipino

  • i like it too and im spanish :)

it's so cute and it's about links between filipinas and spain...we have so many things from you guys...:)

  • As Per freedom of Speech (IMHO)

Quote "While it is true that the ad intends to

promote the Madrid Metro and not the

Philippines, it plays on the stereotypes

    of backwardness, stupidity and chaos

    that have always characterized the

country and does not in anyway help

promote the improving ties between the

    two countries."unquote.

333 years of colonization and the stup still continues!!!

  • I considere very imaginative and well done advertising. And of course I have never thought it misconsidere Philipines at all and I think is crazy nowadays to see it from a colonnial point of view.

In my opinion help to improve the ties betwen the two countries remembering Philipines to the audience with a nice and fun people&atmosphere in that little village.

Very out of time and exagerated your point of view for a every day more global community. Sorry.

  • Some of us just take things too seriously. Victim. Imagined oppression.

We are backwards? ITS TRUE! The fact that he feels victimized is a backward attitude.

And why does it have to "promote ties between the two countries?"

    You really cant please everyone.

I thought it was a good ad.

  • right, because im sure most of the philippines is sprawling with modern infrastructure and wealth? not. i lived in spain and the spaniards look at filipinos in a goodlight. one of the most famous and glorified women in spain is filipina (isabel presyler), and spaniards recognize that

XD

  • senor/senora......I am proud to say I am from that place.......I hope spanish will travel there bec..there is alot to offer there naturally!!!

  • pffft, phils ain't this backwards today, no!

  • in some places it is especially in mindanao. didn't you see where the spot is supposed to have occured? it was in mindanao. i just came from mindanao, and some places there still look like where the commercial was shot.

  • Wow I didnt know they spoke tagalog in Mindanao hahahaha, those spaniards still look at us like indios like they always did. Read between the line folks, tsk tsk once a pig always a pig.

  • again, this is not national geographic. it's a spot. a short commercial. it need not be accurate. if you were observant enough even the last shot was of banawe rice terraced and not mindanao. since this is an ad, its bound to have inaccuracies. indio? where was that in the spot? you are overreading. you and your overwrought imagination

  • ah shut the hell up... it's always the same with you angry filipinos. you have probably never meet a spaniard in your life but your hate about them because of what their ancestors did hundreds of years ago still exists. so much of the philippines still does look like that, you moron.

  • Please forgive my fellow filipino :( you're right he has not met any spaniards in his life. You see it was the Yankees who taught the filipinos to hate the Spaniards. You see if it weren't for them Philippines will be a Spanish - speaking nation for sure.

  • I beg to differ my King Raffers. Don't apologize for me. It was the Spaniards who taught us to hate the Spaniards by their treatment of us.

  • astig though. ^^

  • El Jamon es muy rico! :)

That was so cute. Great promotion.

And sybaris22, we are Indios. Nothing to be ashamed about. Don't be offended. 80% of the country is rural. That's a fact.

    Cheers!

  • Having rural communities and being Indio are mutually exclusive. If you like to think of yourself as an Indio, then feel free, but speak for yourself. :)

  • Entertaining. We can not really get away from the fact that Spain will always be a part of our country. I hope that Spanish people watching this commercial won't think that we do not have urbanized areas also.

  • Really Funny. But I just can't help but wonder that after almost half a millenium, the spanish still like to think of Filipinos as indios.

  • huh? wherever did you get that idea sybaris? the commercial had a positive view of pinoys, i should say. watch it again and get over your skewed nationalism.

  • No, the Filipinos are Filipinos for us, Indios are the indigenous people of the Americas.

  • ahahha typical Filipino behavior.=p

  • ooooh....ooooh....oooohhhh...! Pinoy talagá.
