There is uptown San Diego, indeed. I'd say that would be Banker's Hill, Balboa Park, and Hillcrest area. Banker's Hill was the main part of town until they moved the development closer to the waterfront in the 1910's. Now it's mostly residential (with many well kept Victorian houses).
Villa Montezuma is now a museum indeed, but with limited hours. :o( Low on budget, apparently. Windows were cracked and no yard work. Not enough visitors!
