Very interesting and educational video. Thanks for posting. I hope you make a full recovery...actually I just saw the date this was posted so I hope you already made a full recovery haha.
@Finnythegoose I deadlifted as a youngster, but this damage was caused by 30 years of extreme (for lack of a better term) rock climbing. Lots of hanging off the arms on steep roofs.
they drop your temperature and blood pressure to reduce blood flow and then pump saline into the area to...all of this reduces blood flow in the area during the procedure. I did have quite a bit of bleeding after, but only for one day. I had bruising from my shoulder to hip for about a month.
congrats on surgery, sans pain. it took me a while to return to my pre-level of activity, and it still hurts occasionally when I push too much or when the weather changes. Two words for you - PT. Do it and do it right. It will get you back in the game more quickly. As far as recovery, I'm pretty much back at it.
had mine done a few days ago, not in to much pain feling good to be honest. was just wondering how you recovered after and if you had any on going problems?
I snapped mine 2 years ago and was told by the local GP nothing could be done so I tried to use it for another 6 months but the bulge and the pain got worse so I went to the big city and a bone doctpr screwed the tendon back onto the bone so I can use the arm again, well its been 6 months and its slowly getting better but still can't use any twisting movements but at least I'm smiling again.
To multiple posters: The doc "shrink wrapped" the fur. He just eliminated it with heat which consolidated it back into a sort of tendon. Still, I only have 70% of my biceps tendon left. Next stop, attaching the bicep to my humerus. Not something you want to do.
as to the lack of bleeding - they drop your temperature and blood pressure by a lot. I got charged extra for this. It was call "anesthesia w/ complications." No complication at all for this type of surgery. I was billed still. Go figure.
Yep; 30% frayed bicept tendon. From chronic, athletic over-use. The fraying didn't hurt, but the recovery did. The surgeon did a microfracture as well. Only took pain meds for one week.
Im having this surgery on Friday. I tore my tendon by holding onto my harley to keep it from high siding. I did it without thinking about what I was doing and ended up pulling my arm out of the shoulder socket. I ended up tearing my tendon near the bone. Im looking forward to the surgery. Im tired of being in pain!!
I wish you all the best. As long as you have a great surgeon, this is the best decision you can make. Living with pain and limited functionality is no fun. Post an update.
@bobtaint I was sopposed to get this done today. Was ready to walk out the door and got a call saying my surgery was cancelled because the dr. got sick. So to be continued.
how did he destroy his tendon that much!? im pretty sure a bicep doesnt have the strength to tear a tendon so he couldn't of tried to lift too much...
detatched right outer bicep could'nt be reattached to shoulder-the dr. put a hole in my upper arm bone and re inserted just below the shoulder. I wonder why he could,nt put it higher?? Like back into my shoulder??
I don't know about signs for tendon repair, but I can say that I knew I needed tendon reattachment when my forearm muscle dropped down in my arm. Keep that in mind...repair is always better than reattachment. I can't bend my wrist back past an upright position anymore...
As long as you don't tear your muscle or tendon, you will be fine. Any sort of inflamation or soreness are just warning signs. listen to your body, if it hurts or is sore stay off of it for awhile until you heal up. If not, you could wind up tearing your muscle or tendon, which in that case is not good. Usually at least year recovery...might never be the same either.
I was diagnosed with an inflamed tendon/ tendinitis in my elbow almost a year ago. I kept working out and thought it would go away on its own, I was wrong. If you keep stressing it before it can heal that can cause irreversible damage. A few months out of the gym is worth a full recovery, I learned the hard way.
You are welcome. Pretty cool stuff; amazing what they can do now. The doc debrided the tendon first, then "shrink wrapped" it with a heating device. I've only got 70% of my tendon left. ug. Too much athletics.

Was the patient put to sleep during this or did they use local anesthetic?
Obviously the surgeon is talking to the patient but I cannot figure out if it is in real time or was the video voiced-over after the surgery?
