Both meanings were in use at the time. I know because I recall as a child being told by the teacher after one particular (non-penis related) incident not to "try and pull a boner like that again" and being very embarrassed by her unintentional double entendre.
Argueably the best written comedy EVER!! Malcolm in the Middle is my second choice, but the BevHills is by far my fav, with Granny being the funniest character of the show...TELL 'EM GRANNY AND PASS THE RHUMATISM MEDICINE!!

Boner meant mistake back then, not erection. No such recent slang meaning was intended.

Ahh Granny was funny, but Jed's delivery was the best. This, Three's Company and All In The Family are my three favs of all time!

Actually, since it's Cloris, she probably meant to say that.

hate to break it to you but that ain't Cloris.

Sorry. That's I had heard but apparently that source wasn't very reliable. Although she would've made a funny Granny is you ask me.

An actress named Irene Ryan played Granny in the TV series. In the movie "The Beverly Hillbillies", Cloris Leachman played Granny.

Nope. I talked to granny, she knew exactly what she was saying. They would pay off the actors to throw in little things like this.

Before the slang term "boner" took on its present meaning, it meant "mistake" and that, no doubt, is how Granny meant it here.

It's just typical that the uneducated masses fail to understand the that the word's primary meaning is not the current vulgar one.
