I live in the US. I just got a pair of gouldians over the weekend and built an aviary. I hope they like eachother and breed. Any tips of what I should do to encourage them? They are about 8 months old now

Hello, I Love your finches. I am trying to find me a pair so that i can breed them. do you know where is the best place to find? also i have heard horrible stories about Gouldian hens abandoning their eggs and not hatching them so a "society finch foster parent is required so that the eggs hatch. is that true? thank you for all the help.

@mizgog They are very quiet. The noises they make are rather sweet. They are very peaceful together. They live about 8 years. They can lay many eggs. In one sitting i have had 10 but the most common amount in 6 & they usually lay on at least 2 occasions a season.

I had a book when i was little, and It had photos of this breed, I thought they were fake for weeks because i just couldn't believe the vibrancy and the variety of patterns and colour combinations in one breed ! They are fantastic, I've never seen any with muddled up plumage, the colours are so sharply separated :) Beautiful!

@lahoria236 I wouldn't give them that. You can get stuff specifically for finches. Electrolite is one. It's good for sick finches.

@lahoria236 Finch seed is good. Dried egg shells. Spinach. Shell grit. Don;t get the seed wet so keep the seed away from the water.

@MUSdamBEBIS If your gouldian has a purple chest. A deep purple is male & a light purple is female. If you bird has a white chest look at the yellow on the belly. Pale yellow is female & bright yellow is male. That also applies to purple chests.

I have a pair of Gouldians and I know that 1 of them is for sure a male. The other I'm not sure of. It is a RH, WB, GB. Nice bright colors. There is a medial feather growing out longer than the rest on the tail but it is not as long of a feather than the one my male has. Do you think it is a male or female?

The way to tell with White Chests is the belly. Is the belly a lighter yellow than the one you know is male?

Females have a lighter yellow belly & males a much deeper yellow belly

hi, spoke to u before, have one pair gouldians,plus one cock, the hen is now nesting. problem i have am moving in about one week. need to transfer nest boxes and gouldians to another aviary ,while dismantling one they in and move it. do u think they will stop nesting now and lose any eggs. thanks

Most probably they will. Once you change everything around & move them they will lose their eggs & may need some time to adjust again. That may only take a week or so but they will need to feel confortable again.

Not a prob. There is one more thing you can do but you must take out the food first. You can spray some water mist on them to help cool them down but only if the seed is out of the aviary & once you have don that you can put the seed back.

Make sure you have some water in something for them to swim in & cool off. Don't put it near the seed though. Never get the seed wet. That's what i do for mine. I know it's really hot in S.A & Vic. Here in NSW it was 41 on the weekend so i put two bowls of water in for them. The water should be about an inch high for them to cool off in.
