All right, I got to get this off my chest. And this might not be seen by a lot of people but here we go...
We seriously need to support these REAL artists like De La, cause they FEED OUR SOUL and keep it real! I can't even begin to explain how these pioneers have help shape the world we know today, and I'm talking about the ones who did it for the better, not for worse! Which means we need to constantly let them know how much we appreciate them. BUY their music and show them some love!
@phetops dude, when it comes to de la they don't need record sales anymore... but when it comes to new up and coming artist that make music not garbage your totally right, we can fight the recordcompanies... its not that hard, ignore tv, ignore radio, ignore everything that is pushed into your face.... instead, search the web for some origenality, cause it is out there, believe me
@phetops Bought their other albums, but since iTunes is being a jerk I got this illegally, and since some things are impossible to find, I download that too, and since I'm not exactly rich, I download other shit as well. As long as you buy their music with legit reasons (not because of their iconic status) you're supporting this REAL art. You need to hear it first to determine if they deserve the money you hardly got in order to be different from the hipsters, now shit got tricky.
@phetops WORD! And to all you cats with your narrow, "they gotta get money" bullshit mentality, need to step back and realize that LEGENDS don't need to do the paper chase. Lets you know who's really down for the art, and who's doing it only for that filthy lucre.
It's ridiculous how creatively advanced and visionary they are. Nobody in any genre of music is hanging with them. Maybe Radiohead, Janelle Monae, Madlib and Outkast but that's it.
Keep dreaming, The only reason we know about De La Soul is because the came from an era that hip hop flourished. now the only way they will get big money contracts is if they have a few gun fights, go to jail, and then start "rocking da ice". Hip Hop was a garden of Eden for the mind but this is what cats have turned it into.
@escbosshogg The problem isn't that hip hop has changed. The way I see it, the audience has changed (either its not the same people or they changed their taste because they're hipsters); one of the reasons you can't really call the music out now hip hop (the majority of the mainstream rap music).
The biggest money is in this neorap (or whatever I'm suppose to call it), and it's partly a good thing, because now you can clearly see whos real and who's in only for the money.
you're right- it's not that hiphop has changed, it's just that the industry realized several years ago it's a lot easier to market the mindless crap, because most people out there (let's face it) are just wanting something to bob their head to and not delve into. it doesn't have to mean anything anymore or even have a decent beat. just throw a few current buzz words in there and the masses eat it up.
@CactusAM Yeah, but I honestly haven't wrapped my head around this yet. I know that one problem is that a lot of people only listen to stuff that came out in the 80's and 90's and will ignore the shit from the same caliber that came out in 2010.
Music is art, there shouldn't be restrictions, and I think De La proved they have no limits with this album. They branch out a lot, and that's why I love them so :]
I'm just be blabbing. Hopefully the blabbing is somewhat relevant.
