I guess the Obama “energy plan” revolves around ensuring every tire in America is properly inflated, and that “every expert says [that] would absolutely reduce our oil consumption by 3 to 4%.” Seriously. And WRONG. Maintaining properly inflated tires can improve GAS MILEAGE by 3 to 4% -- not reduce “oil consumption by 3 to 4%.” -- a totally different metric and a HUGE difference.

I believe that, while the impact of keeping tires properly inflated may seem insignificant, when one takes into mind how little one must do in order to maintain their tire pressure, it is a very worthwhile thing to advocate.

Also, it does follow that improving fuel economy will directly improve our dependence on foreign oil (assuming the average amount someone drives is constant).

Not only that...but they also assume that 15% of the tires are underinflated. Soooo...if ALL of the underinflated tires were suddenly inflated properly, it's 15% of 3-4%...which is .45-.6%

3% more miles per gallon is equivalent to 3% less gasoline used.

Gasoline for personal vehicles is where the majority of our imported petroleum winds up.

In order to make a coherent argument you would have to demonstrate that 3% better fuel efficiency is NOT equivalent to 3% less petroleum consumption, which you have clearly failed to do.

However, most people understand 100% of imported oil is not refined to make gasoline. In fact, it's less than 20% of each barrel of oil.

Even if there was a 1:1 relationship with oil to gas, the basic assumption is everyone is driving on grossly under inflated tires.

He recommended that people check their tire inflation in order to improve fuel economy. He did not assume that everyone's tire pressure was low. IF your tire pressure is low, you WILL save fuel by inflating them properly.

Increasing offshore drilling, on the other hand, will accomplish NOTHING. The oil pumped out will not increase supply enough to change prices at the pump. Exxon will sell the oil at market price and YOU will only benefit if you own Exxon stock.

ya exposereality is right. there are 3 parts to a barrel. and only the first 1/3 of the barrel is used to make gasoline. and the next 1/3 is to make diesel and jet fuel. the problem is this. the second 1/3 of the barrel is so much in demand all over the world thats why the prices are high. thats why we need off shore drilling to increase the supply and the prices will go down. and a recent survey concluded that 2 out of 3 americans already check if their tires are properly inflated.
