p.s. check out the pics of the latest XJ concepts - looks alone it pisses all over the BMW/Audi/Merc equivalents.
Jag are on it again, about time, the Mk2 was the M5 of its day, the E-type `the` sportscar, first ever supercar (imho) was the XKSS - not the Merc 300SL or Muira, 177mph in the 50s! lol
The marque was a young brand, it was Leyland that allowed it to meander into tweed jacket land, Sir William Lyons must have been heart broken :(
The post about `soul` is spot on they just have it :))
Sorry but I work on some very specialist machinery (inc F1 cars) and the build on the Jags is as good as any German marque, this is in part jag upping their game but the Germans lowering theirs, a simple fact.
I don't see the big deal in dismissing this car and engine, its cutting edge, very `now` - they have made a future proofed engine, simple as that, it will be detuned for many models, but this is a massive achievement and deserves applause!
I think its stunning and as a Jag fan (Mk2 owner).
It's a true accomplishment no matter what. I've been around for the old and new (from many different manfucturers) and Jag has come such a long way that to me it's right now MILES ahead of what bmw, merc, lexus, etc could even dream of in terms of real character and soul within a car!
with the economy being what it is, I'm afraid it's too early to relax, the company was looking for a bailout from british gov't not so long ago, but they in the end decided against it so now they are trying to get back on track, and so far , things are not looking so good.
actually, you're right. Thanks for the correction.
BTW, I like jags, I just don't think too highly of the build quality which according to consumer reports has not improved much over the years. pity, that.
I hope the production XFR will equal or better the M5's on-road performance. Add with the fact that the XF is already better-looking than the best-looking saloons BMW and Audi have, this WILL be the performance saloon.
It is interesting to see people react when Jaguar does something interesting. They hate it. If audi or BMW did this, no one would argue or complain. Obviously this car wasn't stock. I call this jaguar-hate syndrome.
For your information as well, autoblog com specifies:
The Paul Gentilozzi-driven XFR had been modified with the appropriate safety gear (roll cage, fire suppression system, etc.), along with a sizable low-mounted rear spoiler and a derestricted ECU that allowed the supercharger to yield around 600 horsepower thanks to a bit more boost.
Um, on a speed record. Safety is a prime concern. This car would probably not have hit that top speed if it weren't for the spoiler. - Roll cage - safety. They actually increased the PSI of the supercharger.
It does count. Car makers have been tweaking their cars for years to beat the record. The XJ220 had the turbo boost turned up and the McLaren F1 had its limiter removed when they were doing their record runs.
And "less than 550 horsepower" is still more than 510. With that 549 horsepower, it could only go 212 (the higher runs were to remove the catalytic converters, which added 60 horsepower.)
So explain to me how with less of everything this car goes 13 mph faster. And 13 mph is a lot when you're adding onto 212.
The XJ220 went 217mph in a bowl which is equal to 223mph on a flat road. Not only that but the XJ220 only had a 5 speed gearbox, the XF has a 6 speed gearbox and this record holder has 600bhp.
Also, notably more torque. Don't forget that the Jaguar XJ220 was only a 3.5 litre car, whereas this car has a 5 litre displacement. The supercharger allows for a better spread of power thoughout the rev range, whereas turbos will only kick-in with a certain point to take up the slack, then push on. It's the torque figure here, that's just as important as the power figure.
Anyway, this is a stock engine, however, the electronic restriction (which is only really there for warranty purposes) was disabled. Future 'S' cars may be restricted to 175mph instead.
I have little doubt that given a pair of turbo chargers, the GEN III AJ-V8 could produce in excess of 700hp - The only issues would be with cooling and making sure that good quality cranking gear is used.
Alright then, its clearly because British engineering is far superior to American engineering, always has and always will. I read some american behind this USF1 project proclaim that 90% of the technology in Formula1 is american... Some of you gives are so blinded by your own excess you cant see the wood for the trees.
Yup. Jaguar is looking for a younger crowd now. And I'm glad they're trying to get away from the stuffy image that's dogged it for so long. It has to be an aspirational brand now for the youngsters as well as the retired gentleman.
This comment has received too many negative votes show
The Audi RS6 MTM 702HP is a better car.

But it's the same car, and there we no performance parts ADDED. Just tweaked, so it does count.

This is simply not possible stock. Moving on.
The other auto sites even say that it went this fast with more boost from stock. Nope, that's not legal for this run!
As if even 600 horsepower could do it. I still doubt that. *coughCTS-Vdoesonly191coughwith556hpandthat'sclosecoughto600butnotcloseto225cough*

Stop talking out of your arse.
over 16years ago the XJ220 went close to 220mph with less then 550hp... the CTS-V is good but looks about as aerodynamic as a wheelie bin!
On PHs it states the only changes were safety ones to permit its run on the salt. Good on Jag, balls out and flapping!!!

American engineering, therefore, has made cars that can corner at multiple g's.
quadrupleplay 2 years ago
are you trying to say that american cars can corner because thats crap.
tomato3991 2 years ago
Americans engineer Formula 1 cars. Formula 1 cars corner at several gs. Therefore, Americans can make cars that corner.
