those ribbon cables don’t come out easily so when the tech looks at the problem and opening the computer case is probably one of the last steps of diagnosis
Ok, one thing I want to point out. Sure I hate it when people misdiagnose a problem because they are dumb. But charging $60 to $100 isn't unreasonable. The tech doesn't just push in a cable, but actually spends time figuring out that a cable is loose. You are paying for his experience and skill at solving problems, not his ability to push cables. I hate it when the media tries to make a normal price seem stupid high. Computer problems aren't always this easy.
@armestam Well especially since the problem isn't something to expect. The only reason to open the computer would be to check something that requires a cooling fan. There's absolutely no reason to open a computer to check the hard drive.
I'm sure that if they actually put some problem that commonly happens you would find out who scams and who doesn't.

Actually as a tech professional, the first thing you always check is that all of the vital cables are connected properly, this being one of them.
In this case the cable was completely out...a monkey could have fixed this.
