First, I tune bottom head. To me, it must be at very high tension. Later I can tune top head how I want to hear. You must listen, hear and catch tone differences between each tuning-bolt.
Everything about those drums sound AWESOME!!!! Very good recording especially for only onle mic. What mic and electronics are you using for the recording?
The mic was just a little PC mic (came with Dell Pc in 1999). And about record; The mic was positioned over my head. And I used Creative SB Live sound card. That's it.
@DevrimBabacan Well your room is amazing sounding. If the room sounds good you don't have to do much to capture the essence of the drums. Those drums are captured beautifully. Your drum sound is what I always wanted from day #1.
OMG I love YAMAHA!!!! I miss working on these drums........ the nicest kit I got to tour with from Yamaha was a prototype PHX Kit before they were released! it was like butter!
@blaucha58; Are you kiding? The drums is beautiful with its overtones. And this snare's overtones are not much that awful. I hate Moongel thing. But nowadays I use Remo's damper. It's cool.
Drums sound great for the way they are miked ! Especially the low toms ! I have a maple custom in turquoise, but I always wanted the vintage ! DAMN !!!!
I'm looking into getting a new kit. Now Yamaha makes a kit called the "Tour Custom". It's an all maple shell, but at a really good price. Is their any drummers who have played this kit, has one, or may be able to give a review on them? I don't have many drum shops close to where I live, and finding a kit in the shop to demo would take a good day traveling.
I have the Yamaha Tour Customs and I find that they are awesome, I would give them 4* out of 5. the only thing thats wrong with them is that the hardware isn't great, but other than that they're awesome. so if ur thinking of buying them, buy them!
I just got a Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute, same color as yours and it is the best kit u can probably get out of the maple professional kits out there. I tried DW, Pearl, Tama ect..... they did not match on the sound i needed. The low end you get from the floor is insane. 10 inch tom is perfect. Keep your kit forever.
In this video, all "heads" are Remo Coated. 1-ply. May be, according to tunning, they sound like dark tone. Nowadays I use Remo clear (1-ply). And they sound more brighter. I like it.
ive always loved the sound of yamaha drums, and this isnt the exception, the only thing i didnt liked was the snare drum because it sounds tight as hell, but other than that the sound is amazing
well, that actually explains it, for being a side snare sounds great, i want one like that, but for a main snare a dryer one would be pretty awesome for that amazing sounding drumset!
Yes I finally got the maple. Best drums I've ever played on. I tried all brands like DW, Pearl, Ludwig,Gretch ect and still the maple sounds awesome. So easy to tune too. Keep ur drumkit 4 eva.
Nice sound... I have a set of Maple Customs as well. What type heads are you using on top? I like the depth & richness. I've been using Evans Clear G2's which I like a lot, but have been thinking of experimenting a bit. Best...
have you ever noticed yamaha makes the highest quality instruments in any class? they have best drums, pianos, recording equipment, guitars, and orchestra stuff. not the cheapest though :)
hi, i have the same set you do,maple custom absolut, you have tuned your toms fantastic, iam a pro drummer but iam having a hard time getting them to sound right, spec the lenght of the tone, any tips??? thanx!!!
If you want your kit to sound its absolute potential, you need to loosen the heads right down to wrinkle point, then tap the shell, find out exactly what pitch it is (e.g. A minor, B) then tune both heads to that pitch. If your lazy, like me, just tune your lowest tom as low as possible then tune the rest of the toms a third above each other respectively.
If I'm not worng, there're 3 splashes in this video. Sabian 10"AAX, Sabian 7"Max(Vault) and Zildjian 6" A Custom; not shown in video. It's above 16" crash.
Awesome set man...Dave Weckl was telling me once that the Maple Customs with the Vintage finish sound different, not only because of the shell, but part of it is because of the vintage finish...makes sence to me now.drums this good are worth the wait :) I waited 7 months for my Oak Customs (with the natural oak finish that they no longer make) but it was so worth it. I love my set.
I have the same kit / setup and yes they are amazing. Take note these are the "Maple Customs"- NOT the "Maple Custom Absolutes" or Nouveau drums. These have much thicker shells and sound quite different. Nice playing and tuning btw.
best tom sound ever, exactly how it's supposed to ring! can't wait untill i get my maple custom absolute nouveau 10"+14" toms...it's so long ago i ordered them :)
First, the notes are in my mind. For ex: 10"tom = F.
I tune bottom nearly F (it may be Eb or E). Then, I tune top-head exactly F. If top-head is'nt well strecthed, I loose bottom and tight top. This way you can get good stability and balance of heads. And you can get more sustain and resonance.
Yes, same technique. And I think 14" tom is F, too. Mostly, unintentionally, 14" tom and 10" tom are the same note. But -of course- there is 1 octave difference...
Somebody consider that 14" tom is like a 'floortom'. I don't think that. So, I don't tune it that low...
the sonor s classix series can suck on my dick yamaha is the best brand out there you cannot go wrong i got a absolute maple custom nouvea and it is truely the best kit in the world in my opinion but they are pricely , luckly i got my kit for about half price because it was used for a demo by some pro once for an hour :)
Sorry Phatphace, I can't tell about price. Because Turkey prices may be different. And it doesn't come with hardware. But I've already got stands etc. I've just brought tom holders.
I don't know what bad speaker and/or soundcard you are listening to this video through, but I hear the snares just fine, this is what you would call a very "open" drum.
Also, I love how you contradict yourself nicely. You ask if they are Sabian because they sound tinny, then you proceed to tell him to get Zildjian...oh oh oh wait for it...AND Sabian.
I really don't think you have a f*cking clue what you are talking about.
indeed, I can blatently hear an A custom splash! This drummer has great control and his kit has a beautiful resonance - the toms are very nice sounding to me.. A well executed solo that kept me wanting more.

I don't like adjust snares very firmly. The strainer is on but it's slightly free. Actually it can be heard when I play tremelo... Whatever...
I don't think that Sabians sound tinny. In this video, the first crash-cymbal I hit (0':25") is Zildjian 16" A-Custom Crash. Later, Sabian 16" HHXTreme Crash and again Zildjian.
And, the reason of tinny sound may be my technique or playing style, etc... I think You should not accuse the cymbals.
Yes, You're right but You know, actually this video doesn't show my ability. It just aims to show the sound quality of Maple Custom. The video has low bit-rate though...
