@cpnesmith The stitch is the same whether you're right or left handed. The only difference is that you're holding the working yarn in your left hand. Search for my video "Lefties vs Righties" for more info.
So helpful!! Now I know why my m1s made holes. I must say, your video tutorials are my favorite! Anytime I search for a new technique, I type in the name of the technique and 'very pink' so your videos come up! Thank you!!!
@TonjaTang It isn't about the tightness of the stitches. If you are not putting the correct twist on the M1 stitch, it will leave a huge hole. If you are, for instance working a M1 Left (picking up the bar from front to back) and knitting it through the front loop (instead of the back), it will leave a hole. Same thing if you're working a M1 Right (picking up the bar from back to front) and knitting it incorrectly through the back loop. Watch the video again to make sure you're getting it.
I would like for you to know that after having trouble making M1L and M1R. I have been trying to close the M1L and M1R and have tried about 100 toes and they always have the holes. The statement above just cleared it all up and I have just made my first perfect M1L and M1R. Thanks so much for your help.
@dlk6g If the pattern doesn't indicate which one to use, then it's your choice. Most people prefer M1 left, since it's a bit easier to work. (That's always my choice, too.)
I just want to thank you SO MUC for making all of these videos. They have helped me try SO MANY new things. seriously. I wish I could give you a MASSIVE hug!!!
For the baby sack (I already purchased pattern) - for the collar, Row 1 - where it says to knit to marker, M1R, sm - after I slip the first three for the i-cord, there is only one stitch before the marker. I'm confused as to what to do.
@fpwr11 Your pattern will tell you when it's time to do a M1R or a M1L. If your pattern doesn't specify, you can do whichever one you prefer. Generally, the rule is that if you're adding a stitch close to a right side edge, you M1L to fit in properly with that edge, and M1R for an increase close to a left side edge.
@verypinkknits Thanks. The pattern just says increase evenly across rows. It is the stockinette stitch, so how would you decide for something like that? Thanks for any help you can give me. Your tutorials are great by the way!
@KnittaMortis Sorry you're having trouble. You can always increase the quality of the video, by clicking on the number in the lower right corner that says "360". Select 720 to watch the video in HD. Additionally, you can click the arrows in the lower right corner to make the video full screen.
I had a question, my pattern tells me to m1 at each end of the row, so I was wondering how you would do that? All the videos show this increase being done somewhere in the middle of the work.
@TheSilentPrincess You are correct. :) Make 1 increases can't be done at the very ends of the rows. It won't do any harm to your pattern to do the M1s after the first stitch, and/or before the last stitch. This will actually keep the edges of your work looking really smooth.
I am using a bulky weight yarn (5) and a size 9 needle. I am getting a hole. Am I doing something wrong, or is it the size of the needle and weight of the yarn?
@MsPoppy1967 You shouldn't have holes in your work when you do M1s...they should be nearly invisible. Chances are that you're not twisting the stitch as you work it. Watch the video again to make sure you're doing it correctly - if you're picking up the bar from back-to-front, you need to knit through the front loop of the stitch. If you're picking up the bar from front-to-back, you need to knit through the back loop of the stitch. The twist is what keeps you from having holes in your work.
Does it matter when you do right or left leaning? When does it matter which one? (I hope I haven't posted this question 12 times, I can't seem to get it to post)
@abasscase Sometimes the pattern will tell you that you need to work on or the other (especially if you're working mirror-image increases), but if the pattern doesn't specify, you can use whichever one is your favorite. I prefer the M1-left stitch.
I wish all knit tutorial videos were this clear...both in instructions and resolution.

I am left handed and knit left handed. Would you be able to explain or better yet show me how to do a M1R and M1L knitting left handed?

Thanks for clarifying this. Which way do you knit a m1 if the pattern doesn't specify and just indicates m1? Thanks!

@trixieknits Yes, on the first row you only have one stitch to knit before you M1R and slip marker. That number will increase in subsequent rows.

You work with yarn too small! And you are working too fast without a good enough zoom so I can't actually see what you're doing.
