tony - nice job but the CRTC is not the competition bureau -- it's to ensure the public interest when it comes to telecommunications -- big difference -- unless citizens are just consumers.
the topic was why the government was right to overturn the CRTC but i think whats going on is that the gov awoke the canadian Beast which is the younger generation
@IamTheEditor Even with the government on their arses, Bell still makes unimaginable profits from every other services everyday as we speak. It's us that are getting xxxxed, never Bell.
Very good breakdown. Mirko Bibic said that we don't know what the issue is. Well he can stuff it.
I don't want to be forced to cancel my internet because I use it to much for streaming content then have to go out and buy a TV and subscribe to television service for content I don't want just to get the stuff I want.
The internet offers more choice for consumers and doesn't restrict us to certain times of the day to access it for what we want to watch or do.
There is one gap that I feel has not been addressed by all of the coverage. The topic of throttling - although this ruling has removed the cap (essentially), there is still nothing to stop Bell or Rogers from reducing the bandwidth to a 'drip', thereby negating any advantage that would exist by removing a cap. This 'up to' language (eg. Up to 16Mbps) is an 'out' that is being abused widely....
This whole thing has made me question the existence of the CRTC. I use to value it, because it protected and encouraged Canadian content. However it has fostered an oligopoly of the telecommunication. There is no incentive to innovate and reduce prices, so we pay a lot more and receive a lot less than any other country in the world.
Because there is no incentive to innovate, instead of trying to find a way to increase bandwidth, they will just charge us more. Great job CRTC.
@EeyoreWhyBother As much as the CRTC has pissed me off lately, I wonder how much incredible Canadian music would have been drowned out by the American Media Machine if it didn't exist.
@feeboo44 I agree with your point: that is the reason I have defended the CRTC. One, however, has to wonder what the telephone has to do with music, movies, and t.v in the past? Which is why the oligopoly and gouging exist today. Also how will the CRTC enforce Canadian content in the new Internet age. Most likely they cannot. The internet is being advanced by the younger generations, and The CRTC is composed of old men that just don't understand it or where it's heading.

@pingpongpaul72 The CRTC is to serve the corporate interest, ever since they became nothing but Teleco shareholders and ex-Teleco employees.

oddly enough I saw I on the news yesterday that Canada has the slowest providers in the world. So we get to pay more for a mediocre service.

Thank you to the folks at the Agenda. This video explains the issue very well and in a way that less technical people can understand.

UBB is just an excuse to limit our access to our ISPs web-based, and vastly superior competitors. (ie: Netflix)
