If your instructor told you not to breathe when doing your pattern, epicly wrong dude! each movement must be carried by a short sharp breath, study the theory of power!! ??
this is really intresting, I've watched different versions that are all similar, I know there are diferent varieties of Taekwondo. I'm not sure what variety I do but our belt format goes white, yellow, yellow, blue, blue, purple, purple, brown, brown, then the 9 blacks.
@udot111 The color of the belts is not all that important in TKD. Each school or kwon has its own belting system. What is universally recognized by the kukkiwon is the gup associated with each. for Instance, ours go white, yellow, orange, green, purple, blue, brown, brown w/black, red, red w/ black, and then your black belts.
red would be a second gup and would be 'transferable' to other schools.
@davewainwright I understand this, I'm 4th kup doing won-hyo (nasty crane-stance-gaurding block side kick is getting me) but I'm curious about all the other types. thanks for the info though!
i just won gold for that pattern in a tournament for all of western canada and at the end of the pattern when you do the knife hand after the first one going to the second one you don't put your feet together when you do the next knife hand you have your feet in like the ready stance but not your hands just your feet then you do your second knife hand.

@Hantoria yeh but if he's training with a student and he does a wrist block then he might seriously hurt someone and probably break his watch, my instructor doesn't wear a watch.
@Hantoria depends on club and style. most dojangs have a clock. Anyway that guy is totally pro...but in Jidokwan you can wear anything like that...even instructors. safety.
Hehe, I love seeing all of the little green belts get excited doing this kata, out of the simple kata this is easily my favorite, I just hope that they stay long enough for me to see them do Toi-Gye.
I do the starting bit right, then the knife hand, then the finger thrust thing, then the little movement, then the spin, but we put our hand out straight.
Hey....he has a watch on his left hand...I liked that he had sharp moves. This is kinda how I did it at a tourny, but, I didnt do the crouch after the Outerform block-to-punch secuence.
@Guydabest Actually it's a high outer forearm block. Blocking something like a high punch or a high front knifehand strike. Obviously the blocking tool is the outer forearm and it's oriented very similar to a knifehand strike, but with both fists closed.
@LeonArcher2514 I agree and I am practicing more it all clicked a bit more with my last pattern Dan-Gun before and at my last grading so hopefully will do the same for Do-San.
I did not think I would enjoy patterns when I first started Tae Kwondo but I have to admit despite my reservations as a beginner I think they improve focus timing and muscle memory and are a good way to practice techniques on your own.
I am a 33 yr old ITF green tag and have been learning this pattern, my grading is in six weeks time and I also have a tournament on Sunday both patterns and sparring so was helpful to see the video and see if I can get any further tips. The biggest problem I have is relaxing during patterns, when I am tense it saps my stamina something terrible I am getting better slowly though and figured doing a tournament will help conquer my nerves a bit more unless I mess it up that is lol
I don't see him stamping his foot at all, I love the way he moves, so fluent, wish I was as good, but then am only on green tags. Great you can watch this on here, helps us learn.
There are two clear styles of doing forms. The style which our school and the poomsae competitions use does not bounce into stances, but stays level and controlled. This demonstration isn't "wrong" -- it is just a different method.
@kutvn Do-San is the pseudonym of the patriot Ahn Chang Ho (1876 - 1938). The 24 movements of this pattern represent Mr. Ahn's life which he devoted to furthering the education of Korea and it's independent movement.
wow! my tkd instructor told me I did this pattern wrong, but after watching this vid I can see I did it right... not a 100% perfect, but ok. He told me the beginning was wrong, that when I was done doing my block and punch on the left side, I was suppose to go back into the middle again, and then continue on the right side. but he told me wrong I guess, if this vid showes me exactly what to do; )
@Tracaux your instructor is not wrong. if you watch this video closely he moves his left foot towards the center and brings his right foot back before going to the other side.
@Tracaux Listen to your instructor, he knows better what you're doing and what you can. You cannot be sure if you're doing it right only by watchinh a video :))
Do san is the pseudonym of pariot Ahn Chang Ho (1876-1938)the 24 movements repesent his life which he devoted to futher education of korea and its inpendence movements
Man. I took a break from tkd, and I'm starting again. I need to know all patterns up to joong gun. I really should remember this pattern, becuase I did this for a tournament. idk, I've lost my edge a bit. Only way I can get it back, is going again everyday.
For green belt 6th Kup I was trained in Yul Gok Tul not Won Hyo. By the way, I'm not training the ITF style TKD, we are not using the sine wave (and there has been enough arguing regarding this matter, so please spare the comments). However I just want to say how inspiring Mr Suska's patterns are.
@jackiechanmonro Then your "Club" Is not official I'm part of the ITF, and in my FEDERATION (INTERNATIONAL) things are done as the General Choi said. So you shut up!
@AsBf2 q wzemi se grumni be putko smotana gadna gnida! ti eba shibanata maika det ne moje da poluchawa erekciq, be hui! English translation: Shut the fuck up! My federation is ITF you bitch, so shut the fuck up! putka gadna gnida polqna s laina ! da go duhash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
chill, every club has different instructors who have their own way of teaching; not one instructor can teach the same as another instructor. Their methods could be the same but they would have a different way of disciplining the students
@AsBf2 Here in Bærum taekwondo klubb (norway), we had Do-San for the green tag/stripe (on a yellow belt). So what if someone have learned it earlier or later, so long nobody gets hurts, everything's (probably) fine.
@BJJonVideo it's called a do buk, Firstly Kimono is japenese, taekwondo is korean. Secondly, a kimono is a cerimonial dress worn predominatly by women at formal occasions and by the wealthy.
A karate, judo or japenese jujitsu suit is called a Gi
@popcornpizzapie1 Actually, it's spelled 도복. It is not possible to directly translate Korean characters to Roman (start with the fact that Korean has 40 characters, and Roman only 26, and go from there...) so spelling is phonetic. Dobok is merely one of several phonetic representations of 도복.
@popcornpizzapie1 technically speaking, there is no correct way to write it in 'romanised' form. The only correct way to spell it would be in Korean script.
SINEWAVE - ITF the real Taekwondo teach SINEWAVE. This increases your power - eg normal punch = 15kg, but with SINEWAVE it can increase it to 40kg of hitting power.
@LegendaryBeyar the sine wave, its a way of controlling power and balance whilst adding grace. It is called the sine wave due to its appearance like the y=sin(x) graph in maths. which if you dont know it goes from 0 to 1 to 0 again.
???? I'm in itf taekwondo but as I was watching this I noticed how he slams his foot on the ground each time he moves it i was told by my instructer to never do this I tryed the moves with and without slaming and without slaming it I got more power and my foot didn't hurt as much XD lol but very nice and I have a test in a week on this pattern and this really helps :)
no, you don't slam it; but you don't do it too softly either; when you're doing grading; you do a bit extra to let the instructors/examiners know that you know what you're doing, aka looking confident and not stopping just because of stamping
I like watching different schools go through these forms. I am currently high green within my school. I study Kuk Mu Kwan style tae Kwan do. Our instructor, who studied under grand master kang, tells us to stress stance, as well as keeping teh form more fluid looking. Though still like to watch these videos. Where is the back ground music from?

Thank you for a very good instructional video. I was having difficulty understanding the timing of the wedge block/snap kick/punch sequence and I was rushing the moves. You demonstrate wonderful power in your movements and your breathing is very focused.
wow I never realized how different itf is from wtf. Your movement seems more springy or flexible whereas ours tends to be more grounded and stiff. interesting..
i agree . i'm a shotokan black belt, and i noticed how he springs up, and down on the legs with each movement. ours are very straight, and not so much stiff but not as jumpy. by saying that, i'm not mocking the tae kwon do form just admiring the difference in movement. very beautiful.
it's itf use of power, sinewave. it's basically relaxing for the whole movement and then tensing the whole body at the point of impact. Taekwon-Do's use of power is scientifically developed.
right. i gotcha. it's awesome nonetheless.i always admired tae kwon do for the beautiful kicks, and have actually implemented them into my style. in modern shotokan they use alot of the same kicks but i never took time to really watch the "art" aspect of tae kwon do. the "tul" are beautiful.
oh wow! thats soooo cool im in ITF and is it true you guys only use your feet when sparring? and only punching to the body? thats cooooool! its amazing how different ,clubs are
I do not do TKD but I am interested to know... On the bounce between moves is the punch or strike supposed to be done as you come up or do you go down, come up and then strike?
Your snap is very good. You've learned well from whoever taught you.
I would ask you this, at 0:16 you perform a move that is designed to break free from an opponent who grabbed your hand.
Currently you just rotate the wrist. Think about this - is just rotating the wrist on its axis enough to break free from the opponent? Unlikely. Therefore this move is, in other styles, given a 45 degree arm movement down and left in addition to the rotation of the wrist which you have.
@captnpepsi Uhhm you can use that movement to break out of a grab, it's not just a squat and twist.
Picture someone grabbing your wrist after the straight fingertip thrust, that's the vertical spear finger looking thingy.
Your right wrist will be grabbed, what you do, is squat, twist and thrust, in a direction that is between your left side and your front. That should effect a release, if your assailant is still holding on, then the turning motion of your body, will complete the release.
@caribbeanpriceclub yes that is what i am saying. However, at 0:16 - he is rotating it on the axis of the arm only. The arm should be roating on its own axis as well as moving diagonally down and left as he crouches instead of staying fixed.
@captnpepsi Nope not down and left, horizontal while twisting and shooting out hard to the left. Try it, you'll see it works. Most peeps in my dojang thought as you did, we misunderstood the technique.
First of all, you must always look in the direction of your move before you make the move, especially for the first move, for which I did not see. This is very important for one must see their opponent before defending or attacking them. I'm very surprised at fifth dan one could make such a mistake. However, I cannot contradict anything else done in this pattern since I'm in a different organization which has a Do-San that slightly variates from this one.
@xenianightshade That's what I was originally taught, some people believe that looking in the direction, you are going to go is telegraphing tho. Some people believe that you should look as you turn 'cause that adds power to your movement. In the encyclopedia, the still photos suggest, looking b4 u move. North Koreans as seen on youtube channel ITFHQ, look as they move. Different strokes I guess.

ToxicMayo9 2 years ago
Hello !
i train Taekwondo. I just want to say that the ''dip'' is actually a way to get more power in the move . It is called the sinus wave.
LegendaryBeyar 2 years ago 2
@LegendaryBeyar Haha, my trainers says exactly the same!
LOidos2000 1 year ago
@LOidos2000 :D
LegendaryBeyar 1 year ago
@LegendaryBeyar I think it is called a sine wave. Sine describes a type of up and down curve. Sinus refers to anatomy and means "cavity".
KarateJutsuNinja 1 year ago 2
@KarateJutsuNinja a sinus curve is a sine
JonasGiftFromGod 1 year ago
@LegendaryBeyar Sine. Not Sinus.
watkinsonatdal 1 year ago 3
@LegendaryBeyar the sine wave, its a way of controlling power and balance whilst adding grace. It is called the sine wave due to its appearance like the y=sin(x) graph in maths. which if you dont know it goes from 0 to 1 to 0 again.
j4k3g4l3 1 year ago
@ToxicMayo9.................. to produce more power through sine wave as it has to start some where. hope this helps
stinkyboy2007 2 years ago
There are NO outer palm blocks in Do-San. It is an outer forearm block. ITF does the SINE Wave method is the reason for the "dip".
karateworld4920 2 years ago
@ToxicMayo9 there's nothing wrong?

???? I'm in itf taekwondo but as I was watching this I noticed how he slams his foot on the ground each time he moves it i was told by my instructer to never do this I tryed the moves with and without slaming and without slaming it I got more power and my foot didn't hurt as much XD lol but very nice and I have a test in a week on this pattern and this really helps :)
samcod55555 2 years ago 7
Actually depends on the pattern in some patterns the foot slaming is actually part of certain moves.
AsBf2 2 years ago

@samcod55555 It doesnt seems to be slaming to hard,,, meaby the floor is to soundy.
gregorioster 1 year ago
no, you don't slam it; but you don't do it too softly either; when you're doing grading; you do a bit extra to let the instructors/examiners know that you know what you're doing, aka looking confident and not stopping just because of stamping
Sp0rtybab3 1 year ago
@samcod55555
you always have to perform as your instructor says.
every sabum nim does perform on his own way.
those pattern vids are interesting and the movements are always the same but the slaming or the speed of the movements are different

i know that one :-D i got green belt with blue stripe:-D

I like watching different schools go through these forms. I am currently high green within my school. I study Kuk Mu Kwan style tae Kwan do. Our instructor, who studied under grand master kang, tells us to stress stance, as well as keeping teh form more fluid looking. Though still like to watch these videos. Where is the back ground music from?

Thank you for a very good instructional video. I was having difficulty understanding the timing of the wedge block/snap kick/punch sequence and I was rushing the moves. You demonstrate wonderful power in your movements and your breathing is very focused.
MrBrisk1 2 years ago
Great performance
FightMyS3lf 2 years ago
wow I never realized how different itf is from wtf. Your movement seems more springy or flexible whereas ours tends to be more grounded and stiff. interesting..
platanopapi 2 years ago 3
i agree . i'm a shotokan black belt, and i noticed how he springs up, and down on the legs with each movement. ours are very straight, and not so much stiff but not as jumpy. by saying that, i'm not mocking the tae kwon do form just admiring the difference in movement. very beautiful.
windowpain81 2 years ago
Yes of course. I meant it in the same way. I find it interesting and awesome as well.
platanopapi 2 years ago
it's itf use of power, sinewave. it's basically relaxing for the whole movement and then tensing the whole body at the point of impact. Taekwon-Do's use of power is scientifically developed.
ax3ninja 2 years ago
right. i gotcha. it's awesome nonetheless.i always admired tae kwon do for the beautiful kicks, and have actually implemented them into my style. in modern shotokan they use alot of the same kicks but i never took time to really watch the "art" aspect of tae kwon do. the "tul" are beautiful.
windowpain81 2 years ago
oh wow! thats soooo cool im in ITF and is it true you guys only use your feet when sparring? and only punching to the body? thats cooooool! its amazing how different ,clubs are

I do not do TKD but I am interested to know... On the bounce between moves is the punch or strike supposed to be done as you come up or do you go down, come up and then strike?
KnowlageSeeker 2 years ago
usually you strike when you come up because of the sine wave motion. properties of the sine wave to help produce more power in the techniques.
koritsu666 2 years ago
No you strike when you come down clearly because gravity adds more power to your move due to your weight being behind it.

Unlikely. Therefore this move is, in other styles, given a 45 degree arm movement down and left in addition to the rotation of the wrist which you have.
captnpepsi 2 years ago
shut up. your not a 5th dan. your an idiot who sits on youtube trying to correct someone whos done taekwondo for like a million years. homo.
mrrightnow9 2 years ago 2
@captnpepsi Uhhm you can use that movement to break out of a grab, it's not just a squat and twist.
Picture someone grabbing your wrist after the straight fingertip thrust, that's the vertical spear finger looking thingy.
Your right wrist will be grabbed, what you do, is squat, twist and thrust, in a direction that is between your left side and your front. That should effect a release, if your assailant is still holding on, then the turning motion of your body, will complete the release.
caribbeanpriceclub 10 months ago
@caribbeanpriceclub yes that is what i am saying. However, at 0:16 - he is rotating it on the axis of the arm only. The arm should be roating on its own axis as well as moving diagonally down and left as he crouches instead of staying fixed.
captnpepsi 10 months ago
@captnpepsi Nope not down and left, horizontal while twisting and shooting out hard to the left. Try it, you'll see it works. Most peeps in my dojang thought as you did, we misunderstood the technique.
caribbeanpriceclub 10 months ago
First of all, you must always look in the direction of your move before you make the move, especially for the first move, for which I did not see. This is very important for one must see their opponent before defending or attacking them. I'm very surprised at fifth dan one could make such a mistake. However, I cannot contradict anything else done in this pattern since I'm in a different organization which has a Do-San that slightly variates from this one.
xenianightshade 2 years ago
@xenianightshade That's what I was originally taught, some people believe that looking in the direction, you are going to go is telegraphing tho. Some people believe that you should look as you turn 'cause that adds power to your movement. In the encyclopedia, the still photos suggest, looking b4 u move. North Koreans as seen on youtube channel ITFHQ, look as they move. Different strokes I guess.
