Furry is just a general term for things realted to the fandom: anthromorphic (human-like or cartoon) animals, real people in the fandom, someone's fursona, etc.

As for why people say furries suck.....well (sigh)..... it is compicated. You can try asking another furry or look up 'furry fandom' on wikipedia.
